This is our first time to Maui, we have been to Oahu before and we liked the touristy area of Waikiki and all the restaurants and shops nearby to go to. We would like to stay somehwere in Maui with similar type of amenities near by. As I have been researching it seems like the west side (Kaanapali) is a good place to go, can any beyonders share their experience what places to avoid and places one should definitely consider.
You're definitely on the right track. Kaanapali is best for that sort of experience since it is very close to Lahaina. Front Street in Lahaina is where you will find all the touristy stuff and the main harbour.
Another nice place to stay is Kihei; it is known as the place where all the Canadians stay. I much prefer the beaches in Kihei as they have much finer sand and extends quite away into the ocean. Kaanapali beach is recognized as one of the nicest beaches however there is lots of coral. Great for snorkelling; not so much for playing in the waves.

We stayed in Kaanapali, beaches were beautiful but no surfing or big shore breaks for fun. As for entertainment Maui is absolutely dead after 9pm, as all the restaurants close at that time.

Kaanapali has a decent price range for accommodations, its not all just super baller stuff (like Wailea).
Kihei is a great central location and also close to where many of the touristy/boating activity launches from (just on the other side of the bay in Maalaea).
If "touristy" means shopping for souvenirs then stay in Kaanapali with easy access to Lahaina.
If "touristy" means activities, then stay in Kihei with quick access to Maalaea, road to Hana, Haleakala, etc.
Can't really go wrong either way, Maui is small.
Better restaurant selection around Kaanapali/Lahaina vs Kihei if that matters to you.
Thanks guys, those are good points to know...I will be renting a car to get around and looking forward to those beaches. What are some restaurants one should check out? Were not big on seafood though.
Also any places that you guys recommend for hikes?
Blitz is totally bang on the restaurants. Some of the very best food is in Kaanapali and Lahaina by far. I would seriously travel back to Leilani's in whaler's village for the Calamari. It's just that damn good.
Coupe get serious, the best surfing spots in the entire world are located in Maui. Yes maui. Not Oahu. Seems you are hell bent that Oahu is some amazing island.
The north shore in Maui is unlike any other spot for surfing. It makes the north shore of Oahu look like child's play.

Maui has a lot of beautiful places to see and explore and is the most diverse of all the islands. A good list to start...
1. Pipiwi trail at the 7 sacred pools. Very nice hike and absolutely scenic with some nice waterfalls. Located past hana so its a fully day trip.
2. Sunrise and hiking at the summit of the volcano. You need to wake up very early to witness just how amazing the sunrise up there is.
3. Snorkelling. DO NOT do Molokini. You'll find they offer this trip for next to nothing. It's a waste of time and relatively boring. You will want to do the turtle town and lanai adventure. Lanai gives you the chance snorkel with live spinner dolphins. The last time I went they came right besides us and inbetween us. The are very social. Turtle town quite possibly has the high population density of sea turtles in Hawaii. Just a very cool site for snorkelling.
4. Cave exploration. It's hard to find reliable tour operators for this. They take you down the SE coast of maui where you can explore hidden caves. It's a different journey each and every time.
I would tend to say a lot of younger people stay on the Kaanapali side and older people are more attracted to Kihei.
The sheraton at Kaanapali has access to one of the best beaches and is close to whaler's village which has some good shopping and some very good restaurants. I say this because it's located on the best stretch of the beach as well. It's actually not uncommon to see 10 foot high surf break in the Kaanapali area.
The north shore area of Maui has some crazy surfing that is not recommended for anyone below an expert skill level. The waves up there can go from 10 feet to 120 feet at different times of the day depending on the season.
A lot of tourists often stop and watch guys being towed on to huge waves. Its definitely something to see.

OP, it's my opinion that there is no bad spot on Maui. I've stayed in the Kannapali area a few times now, and it's great. Last time I felt a bit isolated, like we'd done and experience most everything we wanted to on that side and found ourselves driving to Kihei\Wailea often. Honestly, just pick a spot and enjoy, it's not a big place and you can drive around and get the feel for each area and plan for your next visit.

The best restaurant in Maui is Mama's Fishouse which is on the east side of The island.
Nah c'mon be truthful. You've had so many posts where you think Maui is a waste of time and that Oahu is the bomb where as many people think the exact opposite.
Leilani's at whaler's village is one of the very best restaurant's on the island. I don't say what is the best because everyone's preference is difference. However Brads opinion is always right on just about anything.
They have a wide variety of seafood items that are all locally caught and fresh. The Calamari is unreal. The hula gril right across from it has extended hours and is always busy.
There are a few places just outside Kahalui that have amazing food. They are more geared towards locals then tourists though. I find for whatever reason you get more natural local cuisine places closer to Kahalui.
I would definitely stay in Kaanapali though just as a recommendation. I would stay on the sheraton side of the black rock beach. It's a very nice beach, not insanely over crowded and has an abundance of marine life for snorkelling. It's not uncommon to see sea turtles within a couple feet of the water.
If you are wondering how in the world I could know so much about Maui. I lived there for 2 years straight. I worked as a photographer for one of the hotels and you learn over time what there really is to see on the island.
Unfortunately I can't recommend some of the really good hikes that I personally enjoy as they go off the beaten bath and in several instances are two days journeys. I did do the Honokohau Falls adventure and I call it an adventure because getting up close by land is not not easy.
Two easiest ways to see it are the coast and by helicopter. It's one of the waterfalls featured in Jurassic Park. I would personally say it's one of the nicest waterfalls in maui. You won't see any of the great waterfalls on the side of the road though even though tourists stop like crazy on the road to hana.
DO NOT BUY the the road to Hana CD.
Drive to Hana. Enjoy the drive. Enjoy the view and leave very early.
Stop at the black sand beach just before Hana. Really interesting beach with really nasty surf break. Do not recommend swimming there due to the jellyfish problems. Still a nice place to see.
Always recommend looking around Hana. some very neat things there. It's an old school town all the way. But some very nice things to check out.
Continue the drive towards the 7 sacred pools. This time of the year the water levels will be very high and depending on how bad it is the park rangers may close off the pools to visitors for safety concerns. The 7 sacred pools to me presents one of the most interesting views of the coast looking eastward.
Many never seem to take my advice. Take the south road back to your resort. I know the car rentals places will tell you not to but many people do as it's a lot faster. Not to mention you can drive through the older lava flow on the way back.
If you are the type that has motion sickness take gravol from home or buy dramamine and take it before you start the drive to Hana.
Well 89, instead of getting beat up by peabrain throw more tips in my Oahu thread as I actually want as much advice as you have on things you liked or didn't, regardless of cost or anything else.
I'm going there to have a good time.

The problem with each island is they really appeal to a different demographic. I would honestly provide you with a lot of different spots to see that most of the tourist destinations don't recommend simply because they are out of the way and geared more towards the locals.
I also feel you don't experience Hawaii but doing a lot of the tourist BS. I mean Molokai is the most natural of all the islands and it has the fewest visitors each year. That is one hell of an amazing place to relax and unwind.

I found Mama's Fish House a little over rated. Definitely a good restaurant, but I had better at other restaurants.
Favorites:
- Pineapple Grill (the pistachio crusted ahi especially) was also probably the fanciest restaurant we went too. Had lots of non-seafood dishes
- Mala and their sisters restaurant, Honu Grill
- Lahania Grill
- The Plantation House
- The Sea House (has great breakfasts)
I wasn't impressed with any of the restaurants affiliated with hotels in Kanapalli, including Leilanis. Actually, it was one of the worst meals we had the whole time. All 4 courses tasted like they've been poured out of a can, including some of their signature dishes.
Hula Grill was fairly mediocre as well, but ok for a quick lunch and a drink.
I'd stay away from Whalers village/Kaanapali area for food and stick and to Lahania and Kapalua.

I'm a fan of David Paul's Island Grill. Great food/service, and awesome view of the sunset if you get a table on the patio.
Nick's Fish Market gets great reviews, but I didn't like it. Wasn't bad, but wasn't good either. Also really annoying were the photographers that come around taking pictures only to try to sell you a crappy 4x6 for $50.
^ Agree with above. Went to a bunch of sushi restaurants in Oahu and Maui (including Nobu) and the only one that was decent was Sansei.

My idea of Hawaiian feel is The Old Lahaina Luau but locals would probably disagree haha. The food there is pretty good for a luau.
I'm spending a week at Honua Kai in April, can't wait as its my first Hawaii trip. Kaanapali seemed to have everything I was looking for.

Sorry coupe you think you take the best photos in the world. I'm just a guy who enjoys taking photos.
The trail going up to waimoku falls during the wet season is hazardous. There's even signs in the park that warn you of this. The water can approach 5 feet deep in the area you need to cross to get to waimoku falls. I guess you don't heed warning signs though.
Don't think I'd tell you that you need a 4x4 for anything maui related.
Total nonsense of course. I've only lived on the island for two years, not like I'd know anything about it.
I tell everyone they need to experience Molokai to truly experience Hawaii. Imagine an entire island that is like Hana and that's the idea. It's very non-commercial with very little tourism especially compared to Oahu and Maui. Maui in the last 5 years has had some crazy commercial growth which is starting to kill the experience of maui.
Even big island is very cool in it's own rights. The volcano's there are just incredible.
Immoff to Maui in 2 weeks, staying in Kaanapali. Reading this thread has got me even more amped to go haha!
Make sure you go eat at Aloha Mixed Plate. I went to Maui almost two years ago and still dream about the food here.

Another vote for north kihei, in a condo with a kitchen if you can. sansei is good but be prepared to line up early on Sunday's and Monday's, ulua beach is good for free snorkeling, hit up the farmers market on the u of h campus for cheap produce/flowers/touristy gifts for family
The Indian restaurant (monsoon india) at menehune shores in kihei is a fantastic place to watch the sunset, but it is byob as they have no liquor lisence. Also, make sure you check out the flatbread company in paia, good pizza in an awesome little surf town. Da kitchen has a couple locations on island, each with their own menu, good for cheap food.
You really can't go wrong with Maui, it is a really good place to relax, and it can be done for quite a reasonable price if you know what to look for.
If you are poor like me, and don't want to eat at the baller restauarants, Freds Mexican in Kihei has great food and is reasonably priced.

Kihei is a good place to stay, they have alot of vacation rentals there. Make sure you check out a place called Wokstar on S. Kihei. Its BYOB, and they have awesome dishes.
Just don't cheap out on a rental vehicle. Make sure you get a relatively new vehicle from a reputable rental store. I recommend this to everyone as the road to hana and going down the volcano are going to require a car that doesn't have shot brakes.

Nah you'd be fine as you won't spend a lot of time out there. The drive to Hana is the majority of the experience and then hiking the pipiwi trail.
You can take the south road back contrary to what they say. It'll save you a lot of time. I suggest leaving your resort in Kaanapali by 6am at the very latest for it.
I say this since you'll avoid being stuck behind tourist buses that stop all the time and drive insanely slow. It'll make the entire experience more enjoyable.
So if I leave that early, I'll be able to do the Pipiwi trail AND the drive in one day? Because that would be sweet. For the road I want be in no rush at all. I see something, just pull over and see it rather than worrying if I'll be back in time.

Take the Hana Highway out there. Enjoy it.
DO NOT DO NOT buy the road to Hana CD or do anything that POS recommends. It'll end up taking you off the road for hours for crap that isn't worth seeing.
Pipiwi Trail, Oheo gulch, and some of the spots around Hana are just cool to check out. The road along the way has some scenic views where you can briefly stop.
The waterfalls on the sides of the road are crap. Utter crap.
There are some cool beaches and photo ops around Hana. Some crazy surf out there.
After you've hiked pipiwi trail, seen waimoku falls, etc. I always suggest taking the south road back as it is a little different and it'll take you through the old lava fields. Try to check on the road advisories ahead of time. This can change each year depending on how bad the wet season is.
The area on the south side of the volcano is well known for having roads that get washed out. The road reports will usually show this though. You will also avoid the traffic headache going back.
Traffic headache meaning non stop idiots diving 15mph on the Hana Highway.
We are in Kihei again. We really like it as its low-key for relaxing. Easy drive to tourist stuff when you want. Buddy owns 2 condos side-by-side here.

I'm not an amazing-race type tourist. I come to relax and do maybe 1 thing per day.
Ate at PuPu actually last week. Slow, but the Hebi was good. Found some killer hot sauces in a market nearby, tried them on the food. Nobody got sick.
We like the Big wave down the street for breakfast.
You have to try going around the coast by Kappalua. Killer drive, get a compact or jeep though. My charger rental is pretty big and goofy on some of the tiny, wet, mucky, sometimes very slippery, and narrow roads.
Doing Hanna Tuesday. Been to the Aquarium, going again as the week pass costs only $8 more/ person than single day pass. Cool tube/ tunnel. Some cool fish, but overall expensive for what you see.
The sunsets around Kihei are amazing.

Has anyone stayed in Wailuku? There is a sweet hostel there I really want to book. I'm thinking of the day I do Road to Hana leaving from Laihana I could stay at Waikuku for the night and go to Halk Sunrise. The place I'm doing all my diving is from Kihei so I'd like to stay close to there in terms of real-world driving times as I really don't want to move a lot but not sure if Waikuku or Laihana is closer.
EDIT: Well I spent quite a bit of time and have booked all my inter island flights, rental vehicles and hostels. Planning out a trip this much beforehand is not my style but Hawaii has too much to see in only 2.5weeks! I'll make it work - pretty stoked now :thumbsup:

Kihei is definitely the place to be. Good location, plenty of beaches close by and less expensive than the places further south. As for specific places, I can't comment.

I've stayed at the Maui Kamaole. We had a one bedroom, 2 bathroom condo style suite with full kitchen. The property was excellent and right across the street from the beach. These units are privately owned so not all the suites are in the same condition.
I have had 2 co-workers stay at Kamaole Sands and they had a similar experience to mine. Again these are privately owned so you may not get a newly reno'd unit.
since there's less activities to do in Maui than Oahu, I'm pretty stocked about on hiking and chasing the light for pictures.Quote:

we will be doing zip-line and snorkel for my gf but in exchange we will be hiking most of the time.

I don't know how many days should I dedicate for east side Maui, as I pretty much want to capture sunrise or sunset on most places.
For snorkelling, definitely check out Ulua Beach and Makena Landing.
FYI, you don't need an SUV/4x4 at all for the road to Hana, it's completely paved. However, if you go the way I'm going to suggest, I would recommend one just in case some areas are washed out from rain.
I would HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend going counter clockwise and doing the full circle to Hana. The travel is so much better. There is an area on the map where the rental companies don't want you to go but it's fine. If you really want a driving adventure, take the north shore road between Lahaina and Wailuku (hwy 340). This is what I expected the RtH to be like after all the horror stories you read. It's total crazyness but a lot of fun, well after looking back!
Pipiwai Trail at sunset could be interesting but definitely bring a flashlight at bare minimum. The hiking isn't hard, there are two very small creek crossings closer to the falls, but the boardwalks can get pretty slick and some areas of the trail quite muddy depending if it's rained a lot or not. Also the creek crossings might be more interesting, again depending on how much rain they have received. Not sure how you guys have planned for this but I might suggest to drive clockwise and stay in Hana one night and continue for the sunset at the falls the next day. Get the Maui Revealed guidebook, it makes the drive around there much better and easier. Make sure to check out the Venus Pool - a must see.
Stop in Paia at the Fish Market Restaurant for dinner for a generous serving of fresh fish
The Haleakala sunrise is awesome. Get there earlier than you'd expect as it gets busy and everyone wants a photo. Others at the hostel suggested to check out the sunset but I never got a chance, some amazing star gazing up there too.
Maui and Kauai were my favorite islands because there is more adventure-type activities to do. Go out and explore, you'll have a blast!

The biggest issue is what is possible to do with my wife who is in here 2nd trimester. She is fairly fit as she still walks to work (25 min each way, We live in Banff), She still hikes tunnel mountain although when we at the sunrise at Haleakala she was out of breath due to elevation. The sea level to 9,700 feet drive made her out of breath obviously.
So my question is - Would she be able to do the pipiwi trail (4 miles) as my wife is 5 months pregnant? as long as elevation wasn't an issue. Im not pushing her to do the hiking as I have my Sister-in-laws BF staying at our condo as well. but she really wants to see the best trails without getting overly exhausted. We are here til Sunday then head to the Fairmont Kei Lani for 3 days after that.
Given that your wife is pregnant, I really don't feel comfortable saying yes or no. However if she was not pregnant and given her fitness level as you mention, I would say it would be quite easy. I love hiking and found it more of a long casual walk than a hike. Bring shoes and not flip flops as I saw on a bunch of people. Just a reminder about the creek crossings and rainfall, pregnant or not.

Perfect. Thanks. We are doing the RTHana, Pipiwi trail etc on Sunday before heading to the Fairmont kei lani. She is pretty fit and even went for a run with me along the beach this morning. The mornings are perfect with the sun showers cooling us off as we got back to the resort.Quote:

I would highly recommend staying in Hana for at least one or two nights. I stayed at the Guest Houses at Malanai for 3 nights and have to say that this was the best 3 nights i've ever had in Hawaii (I've been going to the Hawaiian islands every year for the past 5 years).

All of the best sights of the Hana highway are around Hana itself so by staying in Hana you will not be so rushed to see the sights. There is also one of the most amazing beaches there. Hamoa Beach was just ranked as the 5th best beach in the world by National Geographic. The best part of Hamoa Beach is that nobody goes there because everyone is so rushed to to other things. There just pass by as they drive along the road.

My recommendation....get away from all the resorts and tourists in Kihei or Kaanapali and stay in Hana where time seems to stop.
The best Kihei beaches are at Kamaole 1/2/3. Anything north of Kam 1 the beaches aren't great.Quote:

Bumping this as we have decided to go to Maui this november and right now am looking for places to stay.
I picked Kihei as it's in the center of the island and more quiet
Does anyone recommend a good hotel they stayed in Kihei or a beachfront condo that they stayed in?
We will be there for 7 nights and looking to spend only around 150$/night
If you're looking for beachfront try Royal Mauian, Kamaole Nalu, Hale Pau Hana, Hale Hui Kai, Kihei Surfside, or Mana Kai.
Based on November being a low season there, you can probably get a condo in one of these buildings under $200/nt. I'm not sure you will find $150 but worth a look, good luck!
We stay in a ground floor 2BD at Royal mauian every year FWIW
BUMP. possibly planning on going to Maui in June. im not really a fish eater, but it sounds like everywhere that everyone goes, has fish. any recommendations for places that have food other than fish?
probably going to chill and try and learn to surf and maybe find some other things to go look at. is a car needed to do things everywhere? in kehei, where do you guys recommend staying? im no 89coupe and dont want to spend alot on a hotel, but want a nice beach with good food nearby.
anything else anyone would recommend to me? ive never been to hawaii. ive read the thread, but still looking for anything else to solidfy my going.
Star Noodle is a must. Awesome food, their head chef was 3rd overall in Top Chef. Other than that, we mostly ate around Whaler's Village but all the memorable meals had fish.

You don't NEEEED a car, but you could say the same about Calgary, lol. It's definitely a requirement unless you want to stay in the same spot the whole time.Quote:

We always stay at the Kihei Akahi condo's. They aren't glamorous, but they are decent. It's right across the street from Kamaole Beach II, which is a nice little beach to hit first thing in the morning for snorkeling. Walking distance to about a dozen restaurants (from fast food to high end). Plus it's nice having a condo with kitchen. We always cook breakfast and lunch at the condo, and eat out for supper.
Popping up old thread. I'm heading to Maui pretty soon and staying in Kaanapali. We've got most of the trip nailed down, but details about nightlife are scarce. I figure there's gonna be at least one or two nights where we'll wanna stay out for drinks for a while, and most places seem to close by 10pm... Any suggestions by Kaanapali beach or Lahaina?
Also, can anyone suggest a good surf school/instructor for a day's worth of lessons?
I went with Maui Wave Riders in Lahaina and had a good time. I believe they have a school in Kihei too, but if you're staying in Kaanapali, might as well take the class in Lahaina. Depending on your fitness level, I'd suggest leaving the surfing till near the end of your trip since your shoulders will likely be dead and in pain for the next day or two afterwards.Quote:

As for nightlife, your best bet might be somewhere on Front St, but someone else will probably be able to give better suggestions.
