I wonder what type of steel for the tracks.
Seriously, the price of steel is so cheap now. Any industrialist will have no problem with the structural part of any project.
The German-laid C-train tracks are wobbly as heck, I would not trust them over a speed of 100km/hour. Even though they are laid right beside the CPR tracks which easily handle 20x the load and have been compacted for decades.

Cocoa $7,000 per tonne.
Jesus...calgary to edmonton in 45 minutes for $20?
That would literally change the way we live.
God we are lame...
It's ironic....
We forced and exploited "them" to build our original trans canada rail... maybe we need to re legalize slavery so they will come and give us the cool new toys.
This is why China is winning.
Edmonton and Calgary is one of the busiest business corridors in North America, but we don't have anything like this. As Toma said, this would change our way of life, imagine being able to live in Edmonton and work in Calgary.
When you put it like that, it's even more wild of a concept. I agree, it blows that we don't have these sorts of innovations.Originally posted by derpderp

Is this the same train? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fA1rL...eature=related
check out the end of the vid for how smooth the ride is!!
The Alberta government has been looking at it, but they have for years without much more then reports getting drafted. I know Alberta is a vehicle kind of place, but I am sure if they could get a train in that could get you between the two in under a single hour people would defiantly make use of it.
http://www.transportation.alberta.ca/3940.htm
Just imagine how damn awesome it would make Alberta look to the rest of North America too.
But there should be a caviat...
In Alberta It would probably cost $150 negating most of the true potential.... after all, we need 5 levels of 'middleman' all making a $, and a fairly large corporation paying their ceo $3million salary. its the "American" way.
winning at what? i'm sorry, but when people help perpetuate this old and naive western grade school myth, i have to stop and ask why they think that.Originally posted by derpderp

have you travelled outside of western alberta? high speed trains like this are not at all uncommon. this one made the news for whatever reason, but it's certainly not an example of how China is winning anything.
actually, after seeing video after video of very recent Chinese rocket launch and auto crash test FAILS, I would personally be nervous as hell to ride this train. i bet it's only a matter of time before this thing derails, destroying a whole vlllage and its inhabitants in the process. the difference between the west and the east is that in China, all western media will be immediately escorted from the area, and no one will ever hear about it. or, you would be imprisoned for speaking out about the way the train construction and budget was mismanaged, or for holding an opening prayer service on the day the train was opened. or, when running to the train, your counterfeit Pumas could fail and you could fall under the train and get crushed, because you are not protected by copyright and trademark law against jerkoffs looking to make a quick buck selling you inferior fake clones.
yea, china is winning, all right. one only has to look at all of the chinese immigrants you go to work or school with to see how china is winning.

I think the bigger problem is that noone thinks big in Canada anymore.
Another rail at a northern latitude in Canada, like from say Ft Mcmurray to Hudsons Bay, would probably be an enormous benefit to Canada. Avoid the mountains, which are too expensive to route through.
Even Afghanistan is setting up their first rail system. Outsourced to the best of course - China. China has no quibble about building a rail as long as they get to keep some of the metals/minerals when mining the iron/steel for it. They don't even want land, just the metal and access to it after its built. Hell, you could buy a $3 million decomissioned aircraft carrier melt it down and use that steel right now.
If you had to actually "pay" with dollars, the project would be too expensive. Hell, a stretch of 1KM in Calgary can break the budget for the entire city if you pay with $. Pay a Chinese worker with an ounce of gold every two weeks from the 9-million ounce Malarctic surface gold deposit, and bam - instant rail.
BTW: This is the "cheap" rail. Not even the stuff for the cities which is maglev (ultra smooth ride suspended in magnetic coils instead of riding on steel rails) which costs pennies to operate as you could literally push the traincar with your body weight. Mag-assist, is increasingly popular as it reduces energy costs, but is much more durable as it stays on the tracks (mag assist, could be considered to have a 1000 year warranty)
There are four places to consider for a maglev, Germany, UK, China and maybe Japan.

You mean work in Edmonton and live in Calgary. And then Edmonton would be a ghost town.Originally posted by derpderp

btw, have you been to China in the last 15 years? or are you one of those naive western child who only "assume" everything China does is bad and US is ftw? Funny that the past summer Olympic is one of the most successful EVER and non of the buildings collapsed....
Guillermo I'm not entirely sure which rock your living under. But China is becoming the next global power, and it's going to be unlike anything we've seen in this lifetime of US dominated economic and political policy. Why do you think the western governments AND corporations are all falling over themselves to court to China?

thats esstenitally what Japan did with Tokyo.... most international flights go through narita airport which is about a 40min train ride away from Tokyo.Originally posted by Sugarphreak
If we were China.... we could build a super-train between here and Edmonton... then close down airports at both cities and build a world class international airport in the middle somewhere.
No more planes flying over the city, property values around the airport would go up almost overnight, new development space for the city.... all you would need to do is take a 20 minute train ride to the airport to take a flight, which is pretty much how long you would sit in traffic on Deerfoot anyway.
