Default Good Edmonton Restaurants < $20 per person

I will be stuck in Edmonton for a few days this week as my Dad is having some serious heart surgery done at the U of A Hospital.

I would like to avoid eating at chain restaurants and wouldnt mind a good meal or two while I am out there. Nothing too pricey (I dont need to impress anyone) just some good food with decent atmosphere and at a reasonable price. Seriously if anyone has some "hole in the wall" places that I should try, let me know. Here are some categories that can get you guys thinking.

    Best of the following...

    - Sushi (boat/bar preferred)
    - Pizza (eat in)
    - Steak
    - Burger
    - Donair
    - Mexican
    - Italian

... and whatever you can think of

Are you close to the core? If not where are you located?

I know of a few good places DT, I was stuck in that god awful city for months!

I will be staying close to the U of A in the Tower Suites Hotel (above the Earls). So in the Whyte/Strathcona area would be handy, but I have a car so I dont mind driving across town for a memorable meal.

well for donair it really isnt a "earls, moxies, etc." atmosphere but it would be great for lunch with some family and friends and the donairs are awesome!

i forgot the name but it is right beisde the BMO across from lister residence.

so for you follow 87th ave (going towards the butterdome [big yellow building]) and you will see the BMO on your right 2-3 blocks after the dome.

good luck to your dad on his heart surgery.. wish him the very best and hope the recovery is speedy!

Havent been in Edmonton long but here are a couple places worth checking out:

-High Voltage (donair) awesome place just off Calgary Trail and about 80th, can't remember the cross street. Just watch out for the donair nazi.

-Pack Rat Louies (italian / steak) just off Whyte ave. Went there for Valentines day and it was awesome food.

-Stonehouse, a good pub with a College crowd on the weekends. Very quiet during the week and a tasty burger and drink wont be more than $12.

    - Il Portico, nice Italian restaurant without breaking the bank.

Both are located in the Jasper Ave and 100st - 110st area.

I recommend Pack Rat Loui's as well, it is just off Whyte ave across the street from the gazebo. As well, try Yanni's on Whyte ave, both have excellent food.

    Cheers, and good luck.

I like Dante's in the West End...under $20, top notch food, and good service.

Duke's Donair, on 87th Ave and 117 St. Next to Mac's and BMO.

    *Edit*
Da De O, on Whyte Avenue for Po' Boy sndwiches and sweet potato fries. You also get these little tiny corn bread and jalapeno jelly before your meal. Very tasty.

Doan's just off Whyte and Calgary Trail South for Vietnamese food. If you want to travel a bit, I am a big fan of the southside Pagolac for Vietnamese food - I will have to look up the address since I can't remember at the moment.

Funky Pickle on Whyte for some late night Pizza by the slice.

I'll post more if I think of them

theres another doans right next to jasper, and 115 st not the best pho ive had tho. i prefer the pho place in WEM in the "china town" area (right outside of the TnT food store)

il portico is great italian food, sorintinos is also good (both in DT)

bistro braha isn't too bad for german/ deutch food, they make a mean shintzel (sp) (in DT)

windsor bar (close to dukes, and that BMO mentioned above) has 25 cent wings every day of the week if you get more than 50, and the wings are pretty damn good too.

hardware grill is probably one of the best steak houses in edmonton but its around 40 for a plate. (DT)

yanni's is great greek food, and they have an uber chill lounge in the basement.....(don't eat upstairs you'll miss out!)...its got that whole mediteranian vibe to it with the sofas and cushions. (Whyte)

thats all i can think of off the top of my head

I like Mikado's for sushi if it's still there.
High Voltage mentioned above is awesome.
Tropika in Edmonton is better than Calgary.
the wings at Hooters in west ed ain't bad either.
I hear that Jack's Grill and Hardware Grill are both really
    good, but expensive.

Best wishes with your dad's surgery.

Mikado is good, but it's probably out of your price range if you're looking for something kinda cheap.

Donairs, most definitely Queen's Donair. It's at the corner of Stoney Plain Trail and 156st.

Mikado's definitely has the best sushi in Edmonton, though the sushi places in Calgary such as Towa are still better.

By the U of A, try High Level Diner - on 109th just at the end of the High Level Bridge. They make their own ketchup, and it's awesome!!!

I also like the Route 99 Diner, it's a little further (99St and 89Ave). Wicked burgers for cheap (< $8) and KICK ASS eggs benedict!

For sushi, it's hard to beat Kyoto. There's one across from High Level Diner, but it's not as good as the one downtown (Jasper and 109th). Go for lunch and their menu is cheaper. Where else can you get a BIG plate of assorted sashimi for $15 (at lunch.. it's $18 at dinner)?!? And their Rainbow Rolls.. Yum!!!

For pizza, there's a place by the High Level that is pretty good as well (they smother the toppings on). I think it's called Pharos Pizza and Spaghetti. It's also on 109th.
You have a couple of photos that are great... you must be very good at photoshop!
