I thinking more about the m235i racing which got stuck with the 2 series torque converter unit. I was worried they'd use the same excuses to slide it into the M2 version as well.
I think the first gen X5M had a slushbox. The DCT is new.Originally posted by rage2
E36 M3.
But i guess it depends if you are going with the "not a real M" moniker.
To be honest the ZF8 in the M235i racing is a great option from a cost perspective. Just look at the option price of that DCT.

My mistake i thought for some reason the new ones got DCT's. I think it was just highly rumoured.

Why do you say "isnt really a M car"Originally posted by rage2
Although this isn't really a M car (lol) when was the last time an M car even had a torque converter?
I'm very interested in this car.. but is it worth it?
would it be better to just shell out the extra cash for a lightly used m4 or spend the same on an E92 M3 Comp?
E9x feels a bit dated now. unless you want an NA, M4 all the way. A used F30M is still over 80k tho. hardly a fair comparison?Originally posted by gregrego

I'm just saying that to fuck with a few people. It's sold under the M banner, so for all intents and purposes, it's an M car. Some argue that it's not because it doesn't really have an M engine (modified N55) and isn't much different from a M235i.Originally posted by gregrego

It's worth it compared to the M235i. Nearly the same money, with more power, diff, and a few other M specific goodies. On paper it's a decent gap from the M235i, but really have to drive it to know when it's out. It's priced fairly competitively against the competition (CLA45, RS3 which we don't get here) so if you are shopping in this segment, it's the only RWD offering available.

Yea. The reality is a similarly equipped M235i ( ie rwd manual with executive and premium packages) is $52,200 before fees, PDI etc. which is how the "loaded" M2 is quoted as $61,000.
So $8,800 dollar premium or 17% premium over the M235i.
Want an automatic?
Add $1,600 to the price of the M235i and $3,900 to the price of M2
M235i is also price negotiable whereas I bet the M2 is 0 wiggle room if not market price adjustment upward ( ala 1M ).
The 61,000 price i quoted that I paid for mine, an automatic with every package and metallic paint. Was an all in price with a full BMW winter tire package (RFT's), M Perf LSD installed ( which because its dealer installed its overpriced ), and dealer installed 3M ( was already on the car). Plus i have the convenience telephony packages with are ~550 additional to either car. Overall i negotiated ~4% below MSRP. So i was being dramatic when i said the M2 costs the same amount.
All I am trying to say is that the M2 really does cost quite a bit more than an M235i. Personally I think the additional cost is worth it but its not insignificant. The car is priced about right for the competition, BMW's other offerings, and overall what it comes with.

Would be an excellent track toy.. Looks less dopey than the 1M. At that price you don't feel bad not driving it in inclement weather, leaves room for go fast(er) bits, overpriced wheels, and KWv2's.
Its still a tough decision to make.. Want an 'M' car, but I'm old now.. so is a compact go-kart like rwd corner monster really for me?
Exact reason why you need one, because you're old!Originally posted by gregrego

Just wondering if I would be better off in an m5? Mind you I'm nearing mid life crisis so I should get the fun coupe and some skinny jeans.
I don't know how you could ever cross shop an M2 and an M5. Especially skipping M3 in the middle.

It depends on what you are looking for, the 3/5 are completely different cars.
I've had so many "fun" cars in my life, but I haven't had one now for a year so I'm very confused all of a sudden. I drive a company owned venza right now, huge piece of garbage, you guys are right though, can't compare the 2 cars. I've driven the m4 and fell in love with it, is it wrong to think the m2 would give the same satisfaction? Would it feel as snappy as my mr2?
I think it looks great, I really like the BMW styling too. I don't think i'd get the M2 though, I'd still go with the M3 or M4 at least but that's just me.

Wow for that price point and a true manual transmission, this is now at the top of my "do want" list.
Looks great, not as intimidating as the M4 though.
