Default Plasti-dipping my winter rims...any tips?

So this plasti-dipping crazy has been going on for a long time now, any tips on applying it or even if it's still a good idea? I just picked up an '03 G35 coupe and it has the stock 17 inch rims on the winters and the silver has literally turned to some disgusting brownish colour in some parts, instead of cleaning I thought I'd plasti dip them black...

Seen a few youtube videos, apparently you don't need to do any prep work or even cover the tires?? Put tons of layers on it to protect better from rocks I guess? Do you do one layer, then wait to dry, then do another layer or do you just do a thick coat at once?

Also, where the hell do I buy it? Any Canadian Tire?

    homehardware

I did mine on my winter beater. I prepped a little bit, got rid of rust with a wire brush. I did 3 light layers a rim. Seems to be holding up so far.

Home Hardwares are only found in small towns it seems.

There are 4 surrounding Calgary; Airdrie, Cochrane, Okotoks and Strathmore.

Plastidip is great. applied mine in the summer and it has held up on the winter, if you call it a winter lol.

I say if you're picky, you could sand it down if it has rough curbs

I think I just 2 cans to finish all four wheels of my integra and I did about 3 coats.

    good luck man !

Never used this stuff before, but that seems like a lot? I can usually do 2 sets of rims with 1 can of Dupli-color(?) wheel paint.

this stuff is not paint, it's nothing like paint, it's a thick sludge that basically dries in to rubber, it's main intend is to rubberise the handles of pliers and stuff... you really cant compare it to spray paint.

I've never seen it in person either, but how well would it wear if something were contacting it? My recumbent bike is squeaky as hell (from the seat distance adjustment pin), as well is our spare bed (metal frame with metal slats).

I wonder if this stuff could help me fix those...

They're certainly big, but I don't know if they are the BEST I've tasted.

Some people go for the flat black plasti-dip look. I have heard of some people using clear plasti-dip then painting whatever color they want on top. When they get sick of it they just peel it off.

plastidip.com you can get clear stuff and dye it whatever colour you want, no need to paint it

hit up youtube too, vids of people using it for all kinds of stuff, including rims.

Excellent. Thanks for the info. For what I want to do, I don't think colour is really needed, but if I wanted to make my wheels have a dark bronze tinge to them, this is where it piqued my curiosity.

I bought way to much of the stuff when I went to do my first set of rims so now i have a lot of experience with the stuff.

I used 3 coats on each rim and only did the face (taped off all the back) I used 3 cans and still had quite a bit left in the 3rd can

This stuff is a lot easier to work with than paint and I found it was better to use thick coats. If you do get a run hold the can upside down and spray till you get just the clear thinner comming out. Mist the thinner on the run and it will easily blend into the surrounding spray.

I waited about 20mins in between coats (as per the directions)
