Default Is street racing still happening in Calgary?

I remember a few years back, saturday nights, hundreds of people would meet at around 10-11pm at the road king for street racing.

I remember the cops where all over it and everyone kept getting busted so I stopped going.

Anyone know if these races are still around?

I'm not into the illegal street racing and the ones who decide to put the public at risk by taking part in street racing get what the deserve.

It is however a good place to check out some sweet rides..

the last time i went (probably 5-6 years ago) a GNX or something that looked like that, did a burnout and the engine caught on fire, 50 kids ran over to the engine bay while it was in flames , me and a friend did the exact opposite and never went back since, on the way out on barlow we saw 2 ghost cars and a paddy wagon going full throttle with no lights then signal to that road.

I couldnt believe i used to goto those , never raced but participated in the parking lot loitering. Me and a friend were discussing the name and how relevant it was to the whole event, from waiting for the gdamned trains moving back and forth for half an hour to the simple fact of everyone just sitting around doing nothing then going for wendys on the way home, it really was bullshit lol

and cool cars, from what i can remember the old muscle cars were rare, save for those 2 guys who had the purple and green GTOs or something that they trucked on the flatbed, it was mostly JDMs, SRTs and run of the mill 'tuner' cars, nothing 'sweet'

its about as cool as a single full sweeping wiper blade on a civic and Ractive hood scoops.

Like someone said, maybe 10yrs ago (exaggeration)...

When it first became popular, there actually were some nice rides...but than Secret Street became available and everyone went legit (smart decision). I would imagine kids are the only people you would find now days, if its still going on.

Kids will be kids. Ever since cars were mass produced they have been raced on the street. I'm sure it is still going on somewhere in town.

Kids are also stupid (I was a stupid kid) I remember bullshit corner used to be downtown. Everyone would make bets there and then head en masse to a deserted section of Deerfoot (where douglasdale is today) and race. Before that racers would just troll the downtown lights and wave 50's out the window at each other.

not much racing happens anymore, lots of people still go and meet at tims on barlow but hardly any racing...lots of riceing though.
see some nice cars, but not Alot

and most people down there would be luck to have $50.

They're certainly big, but I don't know if they are the BEST I've tasted.

i recall going there this past summer to get a tims coffee since i was getting off work and i worked in the foothills, as i left with the timmies in hand i got pulled over and asked why i was street racing... i asked the police officer when this happend... he firmly replied around an hour ago.. i kinda laughed( officer didnt like that) so i explained i just got off work and so on and so forth.. but still police man didnt belive me. It took a call to my boss to come down from work and show the officer a time card of my hours to get me out of a street racing ticket... since then i have not even drove down barlow on a saturday night...and it also made me wonder how many street racing tickets they give out to people who arnt actually racing....

A new place where ricers have been gathering last summer was at the church parking lot on 22x highway just west of 37th street. They always act like frickin morons.
A lot of fri/sat nights I would be driving home and see all the rainbow coloured crew hanging out there.

Usually they meet at timmies, hang out for a bit, and then head out to 22x. At least thats what i know.

I have gone a few times a few years ago. Never to race. It was to see the cars. When I went, the racers went to an abandoned road east of Calgary. I don't really see any harm in that. There wasn't a real risk, to others. The only ones at risk were the people that choose to race.

I go there not to race but to actually talk to people and see their rides and stuff, its more of a social gathering to me than anything else. Would u rather spend your sat night playing computer games and talking to your online friends or going out and meeting pretty cool people and check out cars?
