Pick an island and just turn over rocks on beaches and look for critters all day every day.
Would anyone recommend using Uber down there? Or is it worth while to rent a vehicle?
There will be 4 adults, 1 infant. Staying a week. Only long hauls will be Waikiki to Lanikai Beach and Waikiki to the North Shore on different days. The rest will be spent in Waikiki/Ala Moana area.
Not sure what's more worth while. Anyone have experience doing either or?

I can tell you right now that the north shore has zero cabs or uber
Its a mostly rental island that's for sure.
Absolutely rent a vehicle. Not only is it dirt cheap (we often pay $13-20/day). It's what everyone does and what the islands are set up for. Don't even consider anything else, you will regret it.
I'd also recommend staying away from Waikiki, it's not pleasant.

Rent a vehicle.. I got a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited for 250USD for 7 days just a week ago.
GO FLAMES GO!
parking is expensive in waikiki, so might be better off to rent only on the days you need it.
where are you getting these rates?Originally posted by Mitsu3000gt

Heading to Maui in November for 9 nights. We are looking for things to do, but first, primarily 1 or two different areas to stay. We like to move around so 2 locations would be preferable. How big of pain is it to island jump for a few nights?
Also, where can I find these $20 a day car rentals?
As long as you don't have a fear of small planes, you can get tickets for <$100 inter-island... or at least that's what I did it for last time. Definitely not prohibitive, and if you're going all the way there, might as well check out another island.
They are not even that bad, we took them from Oahu and Maui and the wife who doesn't care for flying wasn't phased. Cheap way to check out the other islands for sure. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

Depends what Island. Kauai and Hawaii we always got those cheap rates using that website where you just put in a bid and the rental company accepts it, the name has slipped my mind at the moment. We've also got the super cheap rates when booking a bundle through Expedia. Maui is more expensive for no other reason than it's Maui, and rates are also more expensive in the summer and winter. We got an SUV through Costco for 10 days for around $30/day or so last time on Maui, which is way more expensive than the other islands. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. +1 on Ohe'o Gulch / Seven Sacred Pools. It's basically at the end of Road to Hana. You definitely need to spend at least one night in Hana to truly appreciate that drive and appreciate the beautiful scenery. Waianapanapa State Park is a worthwhile stop along the way. After you check out the Ohe'o Gulch / Seven Sacred Pools, you can do the Pīpīwai Trail up to Waimoku Falls. Both of those sites are stunningly beautiful. Drive around the back side of the island on your way back to the west side of the island instead of taking the same route back. There is some amazing scenery as well when you're driving on the side of cliffs. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
I think you just need to book well in advance to get decent rates. I got a van with Thrifty rental via Expedia for well under $20/day in Maui when the exchange rate was in the gutter about 2 years ago.
I would highly recommend doing a snorkeling/diving trip. The one we did was ~$150USD/pp and it started with a bunch of instructions on diving while on the boat to the destination. Then we did about an hour of snorkeling, then an hour of diving. Lunch was included too. They will let you dive up to ~10-15 meters without a certification and just basic instructions, which was a big selling feature to me as I don't see myself diving a lot.
I saw tons of turtles, two types of sharks, manta rays, a massive eagle ray, fish absolutely everywhere. It was insane and something I'll never forget!
I recommend that area and that hike, but the whole drive/loop plus that hike is an easy day trip if you don't want to say over night in Hana, as there isn't a lot to do if you're already checking the sights along the road. I've done it several times now and always home by dinner-ish back in Lahaina. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Figured I would bump this thread since my wife and I have booked a 12 day trip to Hawaii.
We are staying 6 days in north shore Oahu and 6 days in Kauai. I understand that I should check out the bonsai pipeline and the hot surf spots on the north shore, anything else to see & do?
How about Kauai? We have planned to rent a car and drive down to the na Pali coast, what else should we do?
Thanks appreciate any info.
Have you been to Oahu before? If not definitely rent a car and explore more than just North Shore. North shore is sweet but so much more to do around the island. I'd recommend the following:This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
- Kuaola Ranch (where htey filmed jurassic park and a bunch of other movies). do an ATV tour or even the bus tours are alright. I think they also have ziplining if you're into that
- Pearl Harbour and the Veterans Cemetary
- Hiking up Diamond Head
- Hanauma Bay
- Dole plantation was decent but i wouldn't go out of my way for it.. only if its on the way
Also do a Luau for sure whether it's in Oahu or Kauai
