Thanks for the 14 years of LOLs. Govern yourselves accordingly and avoid uppercut reactions!

In my opinion the process although thorough, is kind of a crapshoot. I have never been through the process but have close friends who have been through, both accepted and deferred.

I know a guy who said reasons for his deferral included: 1) drinking beers in parking lot after hockey - gives a bad impression of drinking and immediately getting into your vehicle. 2) Not progressing in rank at current job.

I have also seen a guy get accepted who also drank parking lot beers (ironically with the same guy who got deferred^^), and who had no real experience other than working a high school/uni summer job and going to uni (didn't finish with any degree/diploma - failed a few courses).

I download movies from TPB every now and then - so alas, I'd be given the boot.

    Update

I handed in my application and have found out my eyes (near-sighted and with astigmatism) may actually completely keep me out (sigh). My only options are to pursue corrective eye surgery, unfortunately I am not a viable candidate for Lasik, leaving me with lens insertion being my only option.

With this in mind I actually applied to an after degree in Education as a backup plan (I already love working with kids, and my current full-time employment deals primarily with kids)

So one more referral, wish me luck...

Seems like a bit of a grey area on that. I mean if it were truly illegal then ISP's would be forced to send you to a court to get fined instead of sending you an anonymous letter to say "stop it"

Sort of the same thing as speeding in your car, they know it was your car but they don't know that "you" committed the crime.

I think it would be more along the lines of smoking bud or drinking and driving or anything that shows up on your criminal record.

As an aside on this does anyone know if minor offences get wiped off your criminal record after a certain length of time, I think they enacted the same sort of thing when I lived in NZ but not sure if it exists here.

They're not looking for people who are claiming that stealing movies off pirate bay is a "grey area." They want people who know the difference between taking advantage of technology in an illegal fashion and honesty. That doesn't mean you won't be hired if you've ever downloaded music or movies, it just means you aren't likely to proceed in the hiring process if you've done it recently. They aren't looking for perfect people, just honest people. If you're seriously interested in applying and have downloaded stuff illegally, delete all of it from your devices and cease downloading stuff from now on.

They have firearms units in the UK, who get called a lot. The guys who I'm friends with here, or know, all thank their stars we are armed here. This concept of "de-escalation without a gun" as their only MO or SOP is complete fallacy. I'm sure if you had someone pointing a gun at you or a member of the public, shooting it, or stabbing you or a member of the public to death, you'd be happy to have that pistol ready to use in that moment. Armed police stop things like the wing nuts with axes and machetes from attacking and beheading people on streets in the middle of English cities, and waiting for a firearms unit doesn't.

I'd go on but it's a firmly entrenched school of thought on this particular topic.. So that's my quick and dirty pinch of perspective on it.

At least 2 of my friends admitted to Torrenting in their hiring process for CPS/RCMP and it did not disqualify them - I wouldn't worry about that. The entire panel interviewing you probably does it too haha.

they don't care about most of it as long as you're honest and not a pedophile.

If you're torrenting insane amounts (as in going over data cap on a regular basis) - even recently - Im sure that could cause issues with the CPS. My impressions are the RCMP dont seem to care as much.

Have family members (cousin/close friends etc) that are CPS and RCMP. Apparently the key is to be completely honest regardless of what you've done cause otherwise during the polygraph you'll be screwed. For drug consumption, from what I was told if you haven't done anything for the preceding 3 years then you'll be fine.

But do remember though; if you have done something in the past that is considered a serious offence, i.e., sexual assault, involvement with underage girls, trafficking drugs etc and you admit to it you can get criminally charged.

I had a friend I used to shoot with that went from CAPS - the old Sheriffs courtroom/protective service, to CPS back in the mid 2000s. One thing he told me he really pooched and felt it almost cost him his chance at being hired (he was hired), was that in the interview they really grilled him on his knowledge of the CPS. IE they first asked what the size of the force was (he was dumbstruck when I answered close, within 100 officers, he answered nearly 500 off the actual force size), and they also asked him to describe the various units in CPS and what he thought their mission/job was. IE air unit, traffic unit, tac unit, patrol/various districts - that sort of thing. IMO making sure you know as much about the force you're applying to join is a good idea, even if these question aren't asked in an interview.

Hah, the CPS also will drop by your home at some point to see how you live and the state of your place - perhaps a lot can be defined about a person, ie are you slovenly at home, that sort of thing..I don't know. My friend used to download porn and couldn't figure out how to reinvert some of the stuff he was getting (don't ask me), and had a television flipped upside down so he could watch it right side up. One of the officers who "surprise" visited him was a female officer. When she saw the TV she asked what gived. My friend turned beet red. She and the other officer just said "out with it". He told them. He still was hired, and eventually went into the firearms unit.

Thanks for all the pointers everyone, I guess I should mention I have ended up taking on a different career path.

Long story short: On account of my vision I was turned away until I could get a referral saying they could be repaired, I got the referral, however upon weighing the costs I saw that even if I went all the way through the interview, I would not be able to afford the surgery. Secondly, after working for a year in the security industry I saw that there are certain types of personalities which are attracted to that type of work which I could not work well with.

This really discouraged me as this has been something I have been working on for a while, only to be basically turned away on account of a physical issue. In light of this I was also informed of my passion for education by my gf. She asked me why I hadn't considered education prior to this, especially since I have a love for children and coaching. I had never really even thought about it as a possible career for me. Anyways last summer I applied to the Werklund School of Education 2 year after degree, and am now a few days away from my first real practicum and am really excited to pursue a career I never thought I'd be in.

Congrats Malibu, you sound like a person who is most interested in a job where you can help others, and education certainly will fit that bill. Don't have any regrets though, you're young, and CPS takes officers in theirs 40s and even 50s, so you may end up in law enforcement sometime later anyway. Eye surgery in 10 years may be faster/better, cheaper, or even covered somewhat under a future health or benefits package.

I too wanted to be a police officer, my father was a career cop, from 23 until he was nearly 60, over 35 years, and so many of my family members are in L/E, I have 2 first cousins teaching at Depot/Div F, and another 3 1st cousins who are in either the RCMP or a city force (Chattam-Kent in ONT).

I never ended up going that route, and I never will, but I do regret some choices I made in life and not becoming an cop when I was younger.

You still have time, lots of it, so if you still feel that calling in a number of years, don't ignore it. These days many people get bored of their career, and don't stick it out for 30+ years until retirement anyway.

Much respect to anyone who works in education, teachers, aides, specailists, anything.

Myself, I like teaching adults, couldn't handle kids every day.

The CPS might attract some macho types, but the ones who advance up the rank have education past HS and are generally cool headed.

Career street cops can sometimes be the most security-guard like but those with real aspirations can go quite far in the organization.
