For the first time, seniors outnumber children in Canada, as the population experienced its greatest increase in the proportion of older people since Confederation, according to the latest census data.

Statistics Canada's 2016 census figures released Wednesday include_demographic data related to age, gender and where Canadians live.

There are now 5.9 million Canadian seniors, compared to 5.8 million Canadians 14 and_under.

This is due to the historic increase in the number of people over_65_— a_jump of_20 per cent since 2011 and_a significantly greater increase than the five_per cent growth experienced by the population as a whole.

"As people get older, they need more health care, more home care, and that puts increasing demands on government spending," says Dr. Frances Woolley, economics professor at Carleton University in Ottawa. "There are big challenges for the government coming on the fiscal side."

Might as well rip the bandaid off now instead of pushing the problem down the road. Time to show that counting on the government for retirement income is a myth.

Raising taxes and forcing the current generation of workers to save less for their own retirement will just cause an even worse issue in another 20-30 years.

Were fine here in AB, but in BC the balance is probably completely out to whack.

GVRD/Vancouver is a singles/kidless location and the Island is probably 70% seniors.

Overall, some national stats mean very little whereas the regional ones are the ones to pay attention to.

What are you basing this on? Major indicators, like birth rates and life expectancy, are showing the opposite.

The baby boom was 1946 until around 1965. Right now the second major peak of the baby boom (roughly 1952) is hitting 65. The first major wave is now around 70 and in about 10 years you'll see a rapid decline in seniors as the first wave starts passing away.

Birth rates are declining yes but most of the oversaturation of seniors is not really related to this.

The thing is a senior is what, 65 - infinite? and a child is what? 0-14?

There actually better be more seniors than children with that comparison considering our average life expectancy (81 years). Next week can we have an article on how there are more adults than babies age 3months to 4 months?
