My friend told me about that. But still have to look at the plan and compare. I never really look at my plan. I just pay. If is worth it I'll sign up for sure. Can't go wrong with a free nest.Originally posted by botox
Not to hijack but I just had a direct energy guy come offering a cap on winter months and a free nest if you sign up for 5 or more years. Anyone bite?
I remember getting training on that programmable thermostat. ...
Something to watch for on older appliances, including mid efficiency, is if you set back the thermostat to far, the appliance never gets hot enough and the flue gases condense, rotting out the appliance, and the chimney prematurely, negating any fuel savings by requiring a new appliance before its really time. The number given back then was 65 F deg minimum.
Newer high efficiency appliances can go further but many manufacturers say 55-60 F minimum intermittently as only the secondary exchanger is stainless, and if you run it cold all the time, you will rot out the primary.
Lots of people are buying thermostats for their unit heaters in garages and bays with a "garage setting" that goes down to 35 deg F. After a couple of years there is nothing left of the unit heater, its just a rust ball hanging by rods.

But wait, it's ok. You're getting a $200 programmable thermostat for free.
Ive been with them for 7 years but just for natural gas. I've had no issues with them.
I've been to lazy to inquire about this deal so who knows if I would even get it haha I have no issues with my poor regular thermostat.

anyone in town wholesale these?
Euro
My NEST(s) frequently disconnect from my wifi. I have also had one of them stop charging off the C wire and the battery drained to empty, which meant the furnace stopped working.
I have had both units (one for each furnace) for nearly a year and comparing my energy expenses to previous years, I havent saved a dime. Hindsight, I wouldnt have purchased them and should have researched them more.
Not the NEST Thermostat but an alert for another NEST product that some of you may have - NEST smoke alarm problem.
lol @ discussing thermostats
i seen tonyhawk instagram a pic of his phone showing his nest smoke detector was going off in a different country.Originally posted by speedog

Pick up a standard IP thermostat.. sometimes under $40 on ebay and you do not wave to worry about it being centralized with a third party.
Bumping this to see people's thoughts on the Honeywell RTH8580WF wi-fi programable thermostat for $160 at Home Depot. I verified I have spare wire so I can tie it into common (C) and now I am ready to buy.
Or should I be going with Nest?

We got these in our dual furnace house. The nest does not offer near as much customization for my needs.
If youre into simplicity however then by all means.
I'm thinking of getting the Honeywell Pretige 2.0, because you can hook up multiple remote sensors. The placement of my thermostat is terrible. With this, apparantly you can have multiple sensors, so for the evening, it will use the living room sensor, at night, a bedroom sensor, or just average them.Originally posted by revelations

^ yea, HW does offer far more options. Nest is great if you DONT want to think about it much.
I like nest mainly because of the smoke/co detector along with them being owned by google and them in turn owning dropcam so I think as time will go on that there will be some pretty neat home automation/security products that will work with nest which would help offset the initial $250 cost.
Except you know they'll release a new compatible version for stuff like that, and make your current one obsolete. These guy did work for Apple, they know how the game is played.Originally posted by schocker
