My 2016 GTI says 87 on the gas door. I've been running 87 since new and the car has been fine. I also do oil changes every 15000 km.
If this is a difference between '15 and '16 gti' I never knew about it.

On a related note, Edmunds did a dyno test on their long term 2010 GTI a few years ago. There was only a 4 peak hp difference between 87 and 91.
