Who cares as long as PEOPLE FUCKING SIGNAL WHEN THEY INTEND TO TURN. Be it lane switches, merges, left turns, right turns, dedicated left turns. Indicate your intent to turn bitch.
This drives me absolutely mental. It's getting worse and worse.
.. not if the light has turned red and they hit you..Originally posted by 03ozwhip
it's a shitty thing to do thing to run a red with someone trying to turn, the unfortunate thing is that the person going straight still has the right of way.
I'll wait that extra half second to clear a yellow that is turning red to wait for the bozos that speed up in the yellow with someone in the turn lane.
Not in my experience. I was a passenger in a car that got in an accident in this scenario. We were turning left, sitting halfway through an intersection, when suddenly the light turned yellow. We proceeded to clear the intersection, making the left turn, but a vehicle coming straight the other direction hit us. The driver of the vehicle going straight was found at fault, because they were the last to enter the intersection, and entered while it was yellow.Originally posted by 03ozwhip

1) it is not illegal to enter an intersection under a yellow, assuming it does not turn red while you are there
2) straight drivers have right-of-way.

Way back when (1986) I took driving classes the instructor specifically told us to enter an intersection while waiting to turn left or you will end up holding up all the others behind you, and even went as far as saying if the intersection is deep enough, advance forward far enough for the person behind you to get his nose into the intersection so they could turn too once the light starts to change...
Still do it today.
tirebob, the big 5-0 is starting to creep up on you.
Will fuck off, again.
The person trying to "run it" has right of way, not you, as long as the light doesn't turn red. If you go and they don't stop, the accident is 100% your fault. Your approach seems reckless.Originally posted by Sentry
Yeah I get into the intersection, back wheels past the stop line and wheels straight obviously. If the light turns yellow, I'm fuckin going and anyone oncoming trying to run it gets honked at.
Most people are just stupid.

I'm totally fine with being in the intersection and letting the light turn fully red before turning left if that's how long it takes for the intersection to clear.
That's how I was taught in drivers ed too. Have never looked up the law, but seems like it should be fine, as I'm not "entering" the intersection on a red or yellow light.

+1 on the farmers turn. My community is full of them! Why on earth you need to swerve right to make a left turn or left to go right is beyond me. You're riving a Sebring not Kenworth with super-bees!

He can't be running the red if he's already in the intersection.

Well then I stand corrected.

From what I remember hearing is that the onus is on the car turning left to clear the intersection safely. Similar (I think) to being in the intersection when a late pedestrian enters the crosswalk. Yes, you have to clear the intersection, but you still have to yield to that asshat, so the responsibility is on you to wait until it's safe for everybody to clear - even if it fucks up everybody else.Originally posted by btimbit

Now that we all agree that you enter the intersection and wait until it's clear (including red light runners going straight).
Do you enter the intersection if you're not the first car turning left? When I learned to drive, it was always just one car goes in, everyone else waits behind the crosswalk. Seemed to hold true in Calgary, but wasn't the same in "big cities" where 2-3 cars was the norm (I've seen as many as 4). Nowadays, I'll definitely follow through if I'm the 2nd and consider it if I'm 3rd and know it's an intersection with a long cycle.
