This Freakonomics podcast has some great discussion on the subject.

That's on over simplification on the matter. For example, dying with dignity (assisted suicide), or the metaphysical belief that "the physical body sucks, so I'm outta' here and will take my chances on the other side".
What we truly need, is an understanding that death is not something to be abhorred, let alone avoided at all cost. I'll elaborate on that if requested, and yes, the reply will include the religious invisible man that will torture you for all eternity if you don't believe in said invisible man.
FAAAK.
Just waiting for Mr. switch to get in here and go bananas
I will be the first to say that I don't have enough knowledge or experience to credibly comment on assisted suicide for people with chronic incurable disease or extremely advanced age. I will defer all discussion on that topic to others.Originally posted by Seth1968

Best if you include the sarcasm smile.

Yup. Much like ISIS/wannabe disenfranchised white boy converts who go allah akbar. Speaking as someone with an uncle who jumped it sucks but it shouldn't be covered.Originally posted by ercchry
I think the main reason they don't cover it is cause it would create a platform for those that want to make a statement, there for not only more attempts would be made... but more exciting and potentially taking bystanders with them. Like a one up'ing situation
From watching a family member die of ALS there is no doubt that assisted suicide should be an option. Family offered to pay for her to go to Switzerland and she was about to but in the end couldn't bring herself to do it. ALS was an absolutely brutal way to go out. And in no way would I group this in with typical suicide.Originally posted by ExtraSlow

I know earlier you mentioned they don't track death from suicide/mental illness but I believe they do. It's just as you said has a bit of a don't touch with a 10 foot pole in the mainstream media. Cancer awareness/organizations blast statistics on all media for fundraising but suicide never gets the same. If you dig you'll find more information.
No specific experience or knowledge is needed. It's just a matter of being compassionate and not self righteous.Originally posted by ExtraSlow
