Actually, the chances are much higher that the crash was due to computer failure rather than pilot error. The B2, along with many modern fighters/stealth planes, will quite literally fall out of the sky if their computer(s) fail.

Ya all the new planes are flown by computers because no human can control the planes due to the weird shapes of the planes.
Thats why in the future we will have only computers flying since we have reached the max human potential for G Force.

    Haha, BSOD.

But in all seriousness, that this is the very first crash since the B2 first rolled out in 1988 is damned impressive.

That is a wicked plane. I agree that its amazing this is the first major crash of the B2 in its history. As a side note, Canada got a C-17 Globemaster. (Obviously, not my photo)

The B-2 is still infinitely cooler than the C-17.

At one point, the B-2 was worth more than its weight in gold. I'm not sure if this is still valid given rising gold prices.

Of course the huge price tag for these things is due to the low production numbers - the end of the Cold War dramatically reduced the number put into service. They were originally intended to penetrate Soviet airspace and deliver a nuclear payload.

Also, I think the 1.2B price tag is not the cost required to simply manufacture and assemble a unit, but includes R&D costs averaged out over each unit.

I realise that, but Canada will never get a stealth bomber like the B2. 1.2 billion, thats a quater of our federal program budget for one year.

Agreed, the acquisition of the C-17's definitely a step in the right direction in terms of defense spending by the government.

The USAF is asking for even more money than the 144B they are currently allocated so they can get the 380 F-22's they want.

Have anyone seen the documentary Why We Fight? In it, they spoke of how Northrop made sure that manufacture of the components for the B-2 was distributed as much as possible across the US, so that congress would be less likely to kill it as its cancellation would have a wide economic impact.
