I love how the taxi industry is just protesting and bitching and moaning instead of trying to update their business model or provide better service.
This might work in other cities but wouldn't do well in Calgary. Especially when there's also car2go assuming you're not going home from the bar. The young urban crowd is not big enough for this to thrive and our downtown is not that big. This city is built for corporate expense accounts and taxi vouchers. People will probably use this here as much as they do Airbnb.
And I don't know why anyone with a decent vehicle would want to do this for $20/hour.
For me its a $55 for a ride from 17th ave to home in the NW which is a little ridiculous I always use a taxi or catch a ride when I am drinking but maybe if the price of taxi's weren't so high others would opt to use this more instead of drinking and driving.
Who in their right mind would drive drunks in their nice car for $20/hr.

Bump, so is uber dying or not?
Quite a battle in Edmonton and German courts have banned uber in that country (link). Netherlands, Spain and France have effectively banned uber as well.
I used it in Miami last month (along with Lyft) so it's definitely not dying. Just depends on how forward-thinking the city/country is I guess. Really wish we had it here
i have used uber in Edmonton a total of 4 times. all were a great experience. i would not have used a cab in the same situation. all usage was done at day. also all rides were free with the promotion they had on.Originally posted by speedog

No to cabbies for me. worst drivers on the road.
I would be very excited if Uber was to operate in Calgary.

I have used Uber a few times as well. I like how you can see exactly where the car is on your phone. The one time I could see him going the wrong way and when he got there he said he made a wrong turn and I said "I know, I was watching" lol
I think it is great. Most of the drivers I have had used to be cab drivers and one of them actually was a cab driver just trying to make some extra money. haha
The cab companies should just copy the Uber app but instead they will just complain because they don't want competition. Lots of cabs parked in front of expensive houses close to me so I think they must be making too much money.
you can track them on the calgary cab app... well for their own cabs at least
I took Uber when I was in Ottawa last week and it was awesome!! Cost half as much as a taxi..
I didn't know they had an app. I will have to check if Edmonton does. Either way I don't use them often, but Uber is definitely convenient. And I saved about $10 a ride. My house to downtown with Uber is $22 and usually around $30-35 for a cab.Originally posted by ercchry

And best part is that Uber pays the driver so you don't have to worry about it.
The Uber app works for me in Calgary but haven't tried it out yet.
I'll try it next week and see how it goes.
the app works but you will notice that it doesn't let you request a car to pick you up in Calgary city limits.Originally posted by flipstah

move the pin up to Edmonton or another city that it works in and you can see that you can
I haven't mentioned this in various threads in hopes that people don't overwhelm the service since they don't have too many cabs.Originally posted by ercchry

But yea, my cab experiences have improved 100x by using them and their app exclusively the last year. Go out for dinner, have some drinks, open the app and book a cab during dessert, and it's there waiting for you by the time you pay your bill. GPS tracking for your cab, it's awesome.

Huge implications for Uber, if they now have to act as an employer.

Can you at least copy and paste it so the rest of us can read it? I don't want to sign up for the WSJ.Originally posted by phreezee
