CNRL must keep employees for two years. Also at same pay.

Shell is more of a country club than Devon was.
Depends on the group. Upstream business maybe, but most support functions are understaffed and downstream business is still pretty busy. I'm putting in 50 hour weeks almost every week.Originally posted by lasimmon

I've heard the culture shock thing... can anyone explain the culture difference? Does cnrl do bonuses? How does their pay compare?

But CNRL is deadly.
So does the deal include Albian Sands? Damn, even Shell lost faith in AB
I heard horror stories from colleagues who work at CNRL.
Horror stories is all I have ever heard from people at CNRL, dog eat dog shop.
But that's the kind of people Edwards wants working there so its not exactly unexpected.
Shell cutthroat? That's the first I have heard of that. I have heard a lot of really annoying things about working for Shell. Cutthroat isn't one of them.
The few people I know who have to make the transition are VERY concerned about the culture shock.

CNRL is a sweat shop and the base pay is terrible. When I was offered a job there the only attractive thing was the long term incentive. If you are at least middle management I would imagine the pay would be decent.Originally posted by flipstah

I have a few friends who were "acquired" by CNQ in the Devon deal and they said it was night and day difference in the culture. They ended up doing the work of 3 people at CNQ compared to their previous position at Devon. One friend's initial vibe was that that was their tactic to circumvent the clause where they had to keep the employees for 2 years, work them until they quit (which a lot did). Now a few years later she realizes thats just the culture.
It seems like everything about the CNQ pay and bonus structure is okay though. Nothing to write home about but not bottom of the barrel either. However according to all my friends over there you work for every last penny.

Call me callous, but I think that's hilarious. God forbid you have to actually work your ass off for your paycheck like the rest of us doOriginally posted by killramos

^ That was pretty well my response... It's a new challenge.
But then again what do I know, I spent yesterday morning testing pens
I think one of the biggest shocks CNRL>Shell will be the difference in processes between the two shops. A lot of man in the middle roles at Shell from what I have heard. Perhaps that has changes since their staffing reductions though.

i have one buddy who always fucking touts how the carbon tax is a good thing and how its endorsed by Shell. Well they just fucked off. Some endorsement.
I am in oil and gas. Most oil and gas employees dont know what hard work actually is. I articled in public practice for my CA. Long grinding low paid hours. In comparison oil and gas work is a joke. Or god forbid you ask people to go above and beyond or do additional work.

CNQ pay structure sucks, bonus isn't bad if the stock is doing well. I stayed for about 4 months after the Devon sale.Originally posted by schurchill39

If it's $80k salary, bring it on!
Cnq employees make big money in the long term on stock. Salary is average. Culture is not "bad", just very unique. Most of the Devon employees were soft as fuck, myself included. I didn't stay, but they treated me fairly.

Shell ain't CNQ, but you do work your ass off. It is cutthroat - managers stomp all over each for budgets and money. Payoff is huge - my accountant showed me an anonymized Shell manager's tax return because we used his numbers for my wife's capital gains, and he made $250K and had a $260K cap gain.Originally posted by killramos
