    Default Use builder's lawyers??

I've decided to build with Jayman and they provide their own lawyers for everything...is this wise? On the one hand you'd think why would you trust their lawyers?...on the other hand, everyone I know used their builder's lawyers and with a reputable builder like Jayman, is there a risk of getting screwed? I'm not sure what to do as lawyers do cost a lot of money and someone else said the lawyers are bound by law to be impartial which I find hard to believe...

I am currently in the process of buying a house, and I opted to use the builder's lawyer because it's cheaper. The builder is trico and the lawyer that they referred me to is Sandra from Charter Law Group.

ha guys!! I totally recommend CARDEL's lawyer they are uber good!

    jk.

    Basically it goes like this.

Builders lawyer is cheaper as the price is built in to your home price.

Downside is that if shit goes south they represent the builder not the purchaser.

For you lifetimes biggest purchase spend the extra bucks and have your own lawyer.

I'm going through this now with a different builder. After getting some outrageous quotes from lawyers, I'll be going with the builder's.

It's a reputable builder and I'm OK with the marginal risk, so the savings are worth it for me.

what is there to go south? you think their lawyers will collect your bank's money and not give you the house?

if there are issues further down the road no matter who you used it not going to be included in the price you have paid up to that point

its just paperwork and holding funds. i wouldnt worry about it

The contract on a new build is so heavily lopsided in favour of the builder anyway hiring your own lawyer is a waste of money. It's not like you can negotiate anything at this point. You've already paid for this service (built into the price of the house), you might as well make use of it.

    Yup.

I used both Jayman and Shane's lawyers.

They will do seasonal hold backs like any other lawyer too.

You have already paid for this service. As said, it would be silly not to use it.

With Jayman, they were 2 weeks late on my possession after I had already signed with the lawyers. They were good about it and paid the interest on my mortgage for those two weeks.

Built a home last year with Brookfield and used their lawyers. No problems at all. Went through BD&P. Like others have said, you've already paid for the services in your sale price.

Not a big deal using a builder's lawyer

No client is worth losing the license to practice, so I can't see anyone trying to pull any shady business to make a few hundred dollars

My builder did not offer free lawyer services when I built my first home @ 2008 but I seldom see a problem for those clients who used builder lawyer.
