I used Champion to have three windows enlarged by cutting concrete.
If I recall correctly; they didn’t show up on the day I had booked them. When I called they indicated that their crew had called in sick. A week later they did show up and did a great job (from what little I know about concrete cutting and window installation). They install Lux windows. They only do a basic install. It was my responsibility to clad the exposed wood buck (or paint if you prefer) and install a window well with drainage etc. I also had to re-frame around the new windows on the inside of the basement, trim it out etc.
If you are willing to put in some effort yourself, this is a pretty good option.
It is amazing the difference it makes in the basement. It feels more like a main floor than a basement with the new larger windows.
What's the charge for doing something like that?Originally posted by 2LOW4SNOW

I don't recall the exact price, but I think it was around $1500 a window. That included cutting the concrete and a basic window install.
That's not bad. I wonder what they charge for a brand new window.Originally posted by 2LOW4SNOW

I'm not sure I entirely understand your question. But I found on average replacing existing windows, without cutting concrete is about $1000 (give or take a couple hundred depending on size). That includes labour to remove the old, install, clad and trim out etc.Originally posted by CapnCrunch

I have used Lux windows for this in the past. I think their product is very good, their customer service is not so good.
Often the full service window installation companies can arrange this for you as well, if you need. Someone like Western Windows would be able to help you out.

Sorry, I meant cutting a new window where there is only a concrete wall. I'd like to have a few windows at the back of my house, but there aren't any currently.Originally posted by 2LOW4SNOW

Makes sense now. I would imagine it wouldn't be much more, give them a call and see.Originally posted by CapnCrunch

Just be sure by cutting a new opening in your foundation that you won't be causing any structural issues down the road.

I'm scheduled to have Western Windows come and enlarge one of my basement windows next month. They don't cut the concrete, but they told me to call A1 Concrete Cutting and Coring and schedule with them for that piece. I had about 6 different window companies come out to give me quotes, had 3 that actually followed up with a quote, and of those, Western Windows seemed most knowledgeable and helpful, and reasonably priced. We'll see how it all turns out, but so far I'm happy with them!

Well, that's not tooo bad, I suppose. Still more than I thought it would be. What size, type and quality of window were they quoting?Originally posted by Sugarphreak
Wanted to bump this thread: I am hunting around for a contractor to englarge one of my basement windows so it will be legal for a bedroom in the future.
I called all three of the reccomended names in this thread:
Champion:
Cut, Supply, Install Window: $1025
NOTES: They won't dig out the well

I have to dig out the hole first, but I don't mind, it's good exerciseOriginally posted by Sugarphreak
Is A1 going to dig out the window well to code as well?
They were saying you need 1 foot all around clear and 3 feet back from the window.

I believe they require far more clearance than you would have to dig for just a window well. They need the space to get the concrete saw in there.
The city of Calgary website has the rules for basement windows on it, check it out.
Also think about drainage for the window well,,, unless you want your new larger window to double as an aquarium.
If I can find some free time tonight I'll see if I can dig up the pics from when I had mine done.
I'm willing to bet that's why most companies won't dig. That way they aren't liable for drainage issues.Originally posted by 2LOW4SNOW

Yes, they gave me the dimensions of the hole I need to dig. My understanding from the window guy was that I need to just buy the metal piece from a Home Depot type store, and install it. Doing a quick read, I now see that I might want to throw a drainage pipe at the bottom of it as well... hmmm... I'd love to see the pics of yours!Originally posted by 2LOW4SNOW

Out of curiosity, what is the size for a window in a basement bedroom?

Out of curiosity, what is the size for a window in a basement bedroom?
They have more info here:Windows
- For bedrooms, provide an unobstructed opening
of NOT less than 0.35 m² (3.8 ft²) in area with
no dimension less than 380 mm (15”). This
window shall be openable from the inside without
the use of tools or special knowledge. Normally,
only slider and casement type windows meet
this requirement.
