    Default Turning left

Turning left at a green light - how far do you pull into the intersection to wait for opposing traffic to clear for you to proceed safely?

My observations are that most do not pull into the intersection or maybe just part ways into the crosswalk. Another thing I have noticed is how many people will sit there with their front wheels turned to the left or their whole vehicle sitting askew with the front end more to the left.

I was taught to get into the intersection and keep my wheels and vehicle straight. Is this still taught or is this considered being to aggressive?

I was taught the same thing about keeping straight wheels, but as to a certain distance, I guess it varies depending on how sharp the corner is, or if I have to try and see around people turning on the other side. I guess generally I sit about a car length in the intersection.

Yeah I get into the intersection, back wheels past the stop line and wheels straight obviously. If the light turns yellow, I'm fuckin going and anyone oncoming trying to run it gets honked at.

    Most people are just stupid.

Legally you shouldnt enter the intersection until you can safetly clear it, but obviously nobody does this.

For safety purposes your wheels should be kept straight so when some idiot rear-ends you you dont end up in oncoming traffics straight through lane and get creamed.

Me personally i pull out and turn a bit because normally i have to try to see past some big ass redneck honkeytonk truck (turning left from the other side) to see if anybody is coming.

What's annoying about this behavior is that it completely fucks up the way our road sensors work. When they don't pull into the intersection, the sensors doesn't detect a car there, and doesn't give advanced green on the next cycle. So for intersections that are busy as fuck (ie Nose Hill Drive northbound left turn onto John Laurie) you have an idiot sitting there for 3-4 stops as there's too much traffic to turn left on green. Next thing you know, traffic is piled back 40 cars deep well into the next block.

They usually realize this after about 10 mins of waiting, and actually pull in to make the turn on yellow, resetting the cycle again.

Agreed but I also wish people would realize to move the fuck out so that the opposing traffic can see around you. Too many people hog the outside line and you can't see past their vehicle.

Also what the heck is it with people in this City and their damn farmers turns? You don't need to turn to the right before turning left and vice versa!

    Is that how it works?

Kensington Road west onto Crowchild south seems to be random whether the left turn gets an advance green or not. That must be why.

I stick to the left side, pull in and turn in as much as possible to clearly see the oncoming traffic with wheels straight. This was how I was taught and it's habit now. It's annoying when the opposing turning vehicle is way to their right and makes it hard for you to see. I've seen some close calls where idiot is too far back and can't see clearly and hopes nobody is coming and goes for it.

Don't think there is any law against moving into the intersection to prepare to turn left.

I am all for pulling into the intersection but there are drivers with their wheels turned left and slowly creeping forward... until their front bumper is pretty much sticking into the opposite lane

I pull into the intersection, and maneuver enough to the left so I can see past the lifted dodge that's blocking my view. I can understand why some people don't though, because pulling into an intersection is leaving you open to a T-boning from someone blowing a red light (happened to my boss)

    Linky?

    Here's the one I found:
If you must stop in the intersection prior to completing a left turn, stay to the right of the centre line and keep your front wheels pointed straight ahead. This will prevent you from being pushed into oncoming traffic if you are hit from the rear. Remain behind the crosswalk if there is only room for one vehicle ahead of you in the intersection.

Yes I read that but there are a lot of recommendations in that book that are not actual laws. Post the law from the ATSA...

And if you read that in context that seems to be referring to situations where you can't clear the intersection because your travel is blocked (ie: lane you are turning left into is plugged)

Maybe its not a Law, but if its in the handbook it should be a pretty good indication of how to handle a situation.

realistically at any left turn you cant clear the intersection because the straight through traffic is in your way.

Again if you read in context it seems to be referring to your lane being blocked not oncoming traffic. You absolutely can clear the intersection completely with oncoming traffic. You cannot clear the intersection if you have nowhere to go. It doesn't state a time period to clear the intersection...

I usually pull at least half a car or a full car into the intersection with my wheels straight. Agree on people who run red lights when you're trying to make a turn

it's a shitty thing to do thing to run a red with someone trying to turn, the unfortunate thing is that the person going straight still has the right of way.
