Default My Internet Speed Test: Telus, Shaw, SpeedTest.com

I am currently a Shaw customer, below are my speed tests from three testing websites. Why is there such a gap in the figures? Is there a testing site which tests the testing sites?

    PING / Download / UPLOAD

    http://speedtest.shaw.ca (SHAW)

    32ms 23.0Mbps 2.22Mbps

    http://shv.globetrotter.net/test/ (TELUS)

    348ms 9.6Mbps 2.22Mbps

    http://www.speedtest.net/ (SPEEDTEST)

    12ms 9.40Mbps 2.42Mbps

Have you ever noticed that anybody driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac?

Keep in mind that shaw fakes out their numbers over a short period of time using their "speed burst" so your results will be a lot higher than the actual speed. They burst your download speed higher for ~10 minutes.

Looking at your SpeedTest numbers, is like looking at porn. Unreachable.

Heard with VDSL they can go synconus up and down, whether that will actually happen is anyone's guess. I think once the VDSL upgrade is complete they may change things around.

SPEEDTEST is the most accurate of the 3 due to non vested interested in your results, such as Mazdairgin said

I have Telus coming next week (tired of the Pong era interface on the TV and slow internet speeds). Now on hold for 45 minutes to cancel Shaw. To quit smoking would be faster than getting ahold of Shaw.... if I smoked.

No experience so I cannot comment, I do believe it to be no worse than Shaw though from what I have read and heard from coworkers and forums like Beyond. 66% of the reason Telus has my money over Shaw is simply the terrible interface and content information supplied by Shaw regarding cable TV. I am certain the Amish are thrilled to be Shaw customers, I on the other hand will be entering the modern era.

I have no experience with the new shaw offerings, but have been a shaw customer for last 15 years, and for me telus is much faster. For the common person, downloading an HD movin in 40 minutes vs 15 doesn't really matter, and sure shaw now has much faster advertised speeds, but for most people, there is no need, as the 15 or 25mbps you get from telus is fast enough for everything. For me, my main problem wish Shaw in 2 out of the 3 places I have lived in the 15 years is that come evening time, I can't do shit all, like even watch an SD youtube feed, whereas telus is consistently fast, day or night. My personal experience, and like I said, have been a previous shaw customer for 15 years. I did switch because of optik really, so decided to go with the bundle, no regrets at all. Love watching TV now as it feels like I am in 2011, vs 1995 with the Shaw system

Shaw extreme w/speedboost which does nothing
    23.63/2.41
    edmonton server.
This is about right as when I am downloading items I get between 2.5mbps - 3mbps which this test shows, speedboost never does anything. On the saturation though in say peak times, I have lived in a older neighbourhood and never experienced it and now live in a new neighbourhood and dont get slowdown either.

Depends on what you consider "faster". In terms of latency, absolutely.

This is Telus Optik TV (using actual fibre).

I switched from Shaw just before they implemented the usage based billing. At that time I was getting <4 mbps during peak hours with Shaw. Sure I had Extreme-I, but I was only seeing the advertised bandwidth at 3AM. What good is that? Plus I do a fair bit of gaming, and the lower latency offered by Telus is absolutely killer.

Shaw simply isn't the company it was 10 years ago. They jam as many people onto a node as they can. And when people start complaining, it's 2+ years before they split the node. No thanks. Telus has made big strides at improving customer service as of late, and I've had ZERO outages or issues with their service. Comparing them to Shaw is night and day.

The straw that broke the camel's back was usage based billing. I'm not totally against usage based billing, as long as there is healthy competition in the market (which is a whole other can of worms, but I digress). The main thing that got me was the quiet decreases to bandwidth for all of Shaw's packages, and the fact that the per GB cost was more expensive than the bandwidth included in the base package. The way Shaw did it, it was just outright gouging.

Anyone who has "loyalty" to Shaw at this point is just a sheep. They're just another company. And Telus is no different. It's a "better the devil you know" situation.

But telus will switch to ubb in no time, and shaw made their caps quite high.
    Extreme 250gb
    bb50 400gb
    bb100 500gb
    bb100+ 750gb
    Seems more than enough

Telus is definitely slower (for the same advertised speeds). When i switched from Telus back to Shaw a couple of years ago, I had both for a week or so, and did some comparisons.

From online speedtests, they seemed comparable, but when it came to torrenting, Shaw won hands down, every time.

That being said, I also have nothing but problems with Shaw. Internet will suddenly drop for no reason for 5 minutes, random slow speeds, and currently I've been experiencing 3 weeks of VERY slow speeds, and Shaw keeps saying there's a "problem in my neighborhood". If it isn't fixed by the time I'm back from vacation, I'm switching to Telus again. Slower speeds or not, their internet is like clockwork at my house (when I had it last)

They're certainly big, but I don't know if they are the BEST I've tasted.
