whats the difference between KA24E and KA24DE? - Click HERE for Original Thread

Lt. Max
i know the 240sx comes with those engines i wanna know what the difference is? i like the 240sx so im just reading up on them tryin to learn more

max
lammer
one is DOHC and other is SOHC i believe.
thich
that's about it.
the KA24E comes in the 89-90 version and is a pretty weak engine...
the KA24DE comes in the subsequent models of the 240SX

you should also try checking out www.zilvia.net for more info... it'd be of more help
Scat
Yeah
They pretty much covered it

In Nissan's engine codes, the letters after the displacement mean different things.

With the KA24DE, the 24 is the 2.4l displacement, the D is for dual overhead cams, and the E is for electronic fuel injection. Nissan's with a turbo engine would have a T in it like my '84 300zx turbo, which is a VG30ET.

So when you have a KA24E, there is no D so it is only a SOHC engine.

KA24E and KA24DE?

Easy, the second one has a D in it, and the first one doest....
Ummm D most likely stands for... ... Dipstick! Yes, the later one comes with a dipstick and the first one you need to buy and aftermarket dipstick for!

Carbon fibre dipsticks add 15hp at the wheels

no no dont listen to them, if you want quick horsepower get type r badging, or mugen stickers, thats an easy 30-40 hp right there

mhmmm so why are people so crazy about sr20det? i mean ka24de add a T and u would have a lot more potential than the sr20 right? cause 0.4 more liters can make a difference... as far as i know.. what is the sr and ka? just engine label like civic and accord?

Search freshalloy.com's 240sx forum for anything similar to sr20 vs ka24 and you'll get pages and pages :)

Lt. Max
alright leme try that hehe

Lt. Max
turns out everyone and their gramma does sr20 mod and it has to rev really high to get high hp output.. this thread i found strongly supports ka24 cause if u build it right it is just as good as sr20 and more powerful and torquier

Hahahaha....Please don't talk about stuff you dont know. The KA is a torquey engine, and does make respectable power....just does not last long. There is more to an engine than upgrading rods, pistons, bearrings. There is engine design dynamics, which in key the KA was designed for a truck, then used in the altima and 240 as well, where the SR was based on a race car engine design.

FYI. The DE has more tq/hp over the E too.

Lt. Max
if i get a 240sx ill stay with ka24de cause swapping in new engine is troublesome and if there are gana be emissions laws and stuff (im in usa) then id rather have a car thats fun and i can drive then a car thats just for looks and illegal on the street. besides why do u think the KA does not last long? if its a truck engine it should last especially long.. cause trucks are built to last.. any engine will last long if u take good care of it.. and i like low end power more then high end power so it all comes down to opinions/desires

also.. if i blow a ka24de i can get anoter for about 500 (US) rather then 2200+(US) for an sr

ka24deT...very reliabile and over 100hp over a sr20det (stock)

The T stands for toast

Do what u want with the KA I'm not stopping you, just dont say stuff you don't know about and pollute others minds.

Trust me my SR "fun" and is 100% torquey and has low end power no problem. Please do more research before posting your wisdom. You don't even own a 240?!!!!:banghead:

Redlyne_mr2
Theres an 89 240sx coupe in Edmonton running 13s with a homemade turbo setup on the original engine which last time I saw had 230 000km on the odometer:thumbsup:
Lt. Max
i did do more research.. i read every post of a 15 page thread SR vs KA in 240sx.org
thats research no?

max

woah redlyne.. that is a sohc engine.. very nice outcome for that guy.. haha

1 thread is not research, I have done research over 2 years. Keep in mind I never said the KAT does not produce power, but it's design is not performance/efficiency minded. As local experiences I knew of only one KAT locally which the built motor blew, and I know of 10 happy SR's running around town. I'm not going to waste my time anymore with this discussion.

Lt. Max
look at this guy
ka24e (the older type) and at just 7.5psi he gets calculated 284hp
doubt u can get that with sr20!

http://www.240sx.org/links/installs/turbo240/240sx.htm
thich
you need to get out and sit in an SR20'd car.... the feeling is something totally different than anything a KA can ever do.

I'm with Hollywood on this one.
my friend has an SR and he's raced a KA-T which at that time had more power than his car had and he still beat it....

the KA wasn't meant for being turbo'd...
reliability will be the largest issue later down the road
and if you end up turboing the KA it'll cost you pretty much the same amount to do it or even more compared the SR... and you STILL have issues with reliability...
like hollywood said... 1 thread doesn't justify much...

and last i checked.. the stock SR20 bottom end can handle up to 400hp... let's see a KA do that... :P

if you're looking for power.... the SR is the way to go b/c it'll be easier to get it out of it.
I've seen SR's in japan that were modded up to 600hp....
there was a Z32 which ran an SR at some ridiculously high hp and ran 11s in Japan too.

you should do more research... :P
Lt. Max
yea that thread also said similar to that.. the sr20 is a lot lighter and smoother cuz its built for racing.. does it get bad fuel mileage cause its a race engine to start with? hehe
yea 400 hp is all i would ever need... i doubt i will have time and money to build myself a track car and daily driver sepeartely, but then again im only 17 as of today.
so many choices! but wouldnt the sr20 have problems with emissions laws and such?
thich

not for us folk up in Canada...... :P

i dont' see how the mileage could be any worse if you had a 2.4L turbo and would probably race in that thing anyways....
my friend never really complained about his mileage and i think it's something anyone with a turbo'd car will have to live with.

yea 400 hp is all i would ever need... i doubt i will have time and money to build myself a track car and daily driver sepeartely, but then again im only 17 as of today.

400hp is a lot of hp and would require some hefty mods to make that car safe and driveable...
so since you doubt u may have the time and money to build a track car, you should reconsider ur choice in a 240.....
BOTH choices would be costly.

go research more on the costs and you'll see what i mean.
at that kind of HP, the KA's ECU has to be retuned anyways.. and ur suspension would be in need of some changing :P

Do they have emissions regulations in washington?

i really have no clue:dunno:

where do i find out?

max

thich
the local government registered office that deals with traffic?

California has stringent laws on emissions... but you're in washington... so just ask around for starters and you'll find out.
Lt. Max
ok i found this site :
http://www.donlen.com/Products_Serv.../Washington.htm

it says i need emissions inspection to gain title to car
and then it also says something about renewal requirement or something ? some random safety inspection...
anyone kno what that means?

max
szw
Sounds like one of those emissions inspections you can get at joe's gas station for 20 bucks.

Your best bet would be to call your registry or ask people who live in washington. Or ask your mom, she'd probably know.
Lt. Max
dang.. theres an emissions test here.. that means sr20det prolly would be a 'tough luck son' situation huh?
