This would be the most appropriate thread to ask:

Where can I find a Watch Valet locally?

Kinda like this one:

Hey All,

I am currently in the market for a new watch after rocking my $300 Esquire, which I used loan money to buy at the time for 10 years. I am looking at getting a Movado after seeing pics of some in here.

Do you guys know the best place to buy one, either locally or online? I don't want a used one though and I am not keen on Craigslist, Kijiji or any of those other sites like that.

The watches I am thinking about are:

- Luno
- Juro
- S.E.

Any help or pricing info would be appreciated. Quite a few of you seem to be afficionados, so I am sure you can give me some guidance. I obviously want to get the best deal as well. Thanks!

Edit: I did use the Store Locator on the site so I know where they are distributed locally. Recommendations there would be appreciated as well if you have experience with any of the retailers.

- h-i-noor jewellers
- calgary jewellery ltd.
- breslauer & warren (they advertise with me at the Calgary Herald so I would probably check them out first)
- oliver's fine jewellery
- peoples jewellers
- mappins jewellers

Just picked up the Luno last month in Miami. Very clean and sharp. I always buy in the states...so don't really know where a good place to go shopping is.

Can't believe some of the super cheap prices on Movado. Do you get duties buying off Amazon.com and shipping to Canada?

I was just wondering if anybody has ordered through a website from the States before on a watch. They are very cheap down there even with the small difference in exchange, but I am wondering about customs charges etc.

Weapon_R you provided a link to Amazon which is cool and I appreciate it. I like this one:

http://www.amazon.com/Movado-Mens-Luno-Watch-0605557/dp/B000GHFZYS/ref=pd_bbs_sr_6/102-3814761-7976113?ie=UTF8&s=watches&qid=1221979653&sr=8-6

Any advice is welcome. Thanks!

If you are lucky, the watch will make it through and you won't pay a dime.

If you are unlucky, the watch will be assessed by Canada Customs and you will pay 5% GST, 7% duty and 6% excise tax.....and to top it all off, each charge is compounded.

They only check 4% of what comes into canada. It just so happens they check my stuff everytime

I remember paying $220 of duty for 4 shirts and a two sweaters this one time.

If your buying online, I would buy from a private seller so he can send it as a gift package, or just buy the watch locally.

Sending as a gift won't work. You are only allowed to receive gifts with a value of up to $60....anything over and above that price is eligible for taxes.

The Canada Customs officers are getting smart with watches. They know how to look up the exact model and assess the correct value.....so even if the U.S undervalues it, Canada Customs will tack on the difference.

How much is the watch your looking for worth locally?
Also warranty might be an issue. I don't know with Movado, but with Omega if you buy online you don't get warranty.

It retails at $995 and there is a link to one for sale on Amazon. I think a weekend trip is the best bet as I am not too keen on buying over the internet anyways and warranty is important too. Thanks for your help so far.

im on the fence with rubber straps, some metals irritate my skin so the rubber is nice for that, also i find that most watches with rubber straps can pull off a leather one pretty good. as well if the rubber one has a deployment clasp in some cases it can transfer over to a leather strap too

like so:

ugliest strap of all time

It is the second watch this week I have purchased. Need to curb the horology addiction a little bit, but there is just something about watches I love. I need to pick up a new watch box tomorrow as mine is out of room... again. :banghead:

I think next cheque I am going to get the all black T-Touch they have in the store. Nice watch and doesnt appear as bulky as the silver ones. It is called the T-Touch trekking:

Lets just say a lot less than the Tag version. I was going to order it this week but found the Tissot and decided to go and look at it tonight. Well we all know how that ended. I have more money left to get the T-Touch (above) now too. If I got the Tag then I would be limited for my extra purchases this month.

The thing I found about Tissot, it I am paying about 50% less, it is still ETA movement, and it isn't automatic. Automatic for me doesnt matter because I have so many watches that usually when I get back around to it the thing is out of power and I have to re-set it. The best battery free watch out there right now are the Eco-Drives (which I have a gold one in) or the new Seiko springdrives which are almost $10,000 for the one I want (well 7,000 pound so I figure just over 10,000 CAD).

Nice watch, my only argument with it is that it has electronics in it, and for being a skeleton automatic just seems like false advertising to me.

That is what I love about watch collecting though, everyone can have an opinion and no one argues about it as much as car guys do.

It's not in binary, I used to have one similar to that. Binary would be too frustrating IMO. haha.

First column : [4 LEDs] Hour x 5 = 20 hours
Second column: [4 LEDs] Hour x 1 = 4 hours
Third: [5 LEDs] Minutes x 10 = 50 minutes
Last: [9 LEDs] Minutes x 1 = 9 minutes

so if its 11:36pm,
First column: 4 LEDs would light up [4 LED x 5 = 20]
Second column: 3 LEDs would light up [3 LED x 1 = 3]

Hour = 23 or 11pm

Third column: 3 LEDs would light up [3 LED x 10 = 30]
Last column: 6 LEDs would light up [6 LED x 1 = 6]

Minutes = 36

I wish I can explain it better haha.

When I first got it, some chick asked me what the time was and I spent about 2 minutes trying to tell her hahaha.

There are a few places in Calgary you can get them. You used to be able to at Time Botique in Market Mall before they went to Watch It and went all Guido style.

I got mine last night at Ann something jewlers near the starbucks. Typically I buy my watches at JVair in the basement of my building though. They carry the Tag, Omega, Rolex, etc. etc.

When I was looking at that Tissot, without me even asking the lady said she could give the watch to me for $525 instead of the $625 price tag, I don't know what that was all about.

Some places (jewelers especially) dont sell many watches. So if someone is going to buy a $600.00 watch they will make sure they move the product instead of arguing over the $100.00

Pretty much the same deal I get every time I get a watch.

Thanks! Yes I got the rubber strap, I was looking for more of a sporty look plus I really like the way all black looks. It feels pretty comfortable so far, I will find out morw after I wear it for a whole day. I originally looked at the all black T-touch that someone posted a few pages earlier, but after comparing the 2 watches there really is no comparison. The Oris has an automatic movement whereas the tissot has quartz movement. Beside that though the overall quality and feel of the Oris is so much better...

What price .. on BR ? discount % ?

After some reseach, with exchange rate today, buying upscale watches, such as Rolex, Cartier etc .. is actually cheaper to buy in Canada then US or even asia .. (tokyo or HK)

Even mid level watches such as Tag, Omega etc .. are quite good price in Canada now .. ( esp in Alberta, only 5% gst )

However, I am comparing MSRP to MSRP, as in US or HK .. can always get deep discount on most brands .. ( not Rolex or Pan .. )

Any idea on B&R ? they are around $3-4K .. quite decent.. :)

Mack1, depends how much you want to buy for your sister?

If you want to buy her something decent, but not expensive, Omega, B&M, and Tag are nice.

If you want to get her something nicer, Cartier, Corum are good! (girls dont like Rolex, and Rolex dont look nice on girls )

This thread just keeps going and going! Is that more like a quartz or an automatic ;) ?

Here is a quick pic that I took back in the summer. The car is easy to name but I would be very surprised if anyone can accurately name the watch...without spending an hour on Google.

A swatch would go way better with a 348, but it isn't a horrible pairing.

holy crap there are some nice watches in this thread ...

i'm in need of a watch (my current one is on my phone :thumbsdow )

i have a maximum of $2100 ... brands I was looking at include Oris, Longines (only a couple of them though), and Hamilton ... this watch needs to last a while, with a timeless design ... any suggestions? other brands welcome as well, i just generally need ideas ... thanks!:D

^^ Omega, Hamilton (I LOVE the open heart), Bell and Ross, Oris, Longines, Tag Heuer, etc.

Omega, Hamilton, and Longines are all owned by the swatch group. They all use ETA based movement. Same with Tissot if you want to save some money and buy two or three different watches for $700/$800 each.

I have the Tissot Quadrato and Tissot Classic and I am really happy with both.

Hamilton and Tissot are both around the $500-$1000 range, Tissot is swiss and Hamilton is american.

I like Hamilton too, Esp the Huge KHAKI, Somehow, I wear it more then other watch.

I like it more then my speedmaster too! It is bigger, but not heavier thx to the Titanium shell, good style and it is not as common as Rolex/Cartier/Tag/Omega/Breit etc and cheaper!! :poosie:

(but the titanium shell is very easy to get scratches!!)

It was rated the best entry level automatic watch in 2007 as well! :D (for under$2K)

Nice nob too! :)

Hamilton or Sinn would be my choices in that catagory.

Sinn used to be great bang for buck. The prices on their watches have doubled in the past couple of years. 3 years ago, the price on a Sinn 903 Navitimer was $1,500....now it's about $3,450 for the exact same watch. That's getting awfully close to some of the bigger names in the low to mid range segment (Omega comes to mind) who actually have a dealer support network when it comes to parts and servicing.

The Oris watches have really caught my eye in that price range. You may be able to find a used watch too in a higher up brand - Breitling, Omega...

Wow I had no idea they had gotten so expensive!!! I would say that I would much rather have an Omega.

Where can we buy Sinn here??

In last ~ 5 yr, price for many brands .. has been double anyway! ( last yr, rise has been dropped in Canada... with strong Cad $, however, price will be up again soon with weak Cad$, and strong euros)

Base Speed master was ~$1K 5-6 yr ago, and they went up to ~ $2,500 .. and I think they are back to $2K area now... (with some discount)

I still remember when Rolex was cheaper then Corum ... :D but not anymore!!! :poosie:

Entry $1K - 2K .. Hamilton, Oris, Ball, Tag etc are good choice .. same movement anyway ..

Mid range $2-5K .. Omega ... Bell and Ross .. Breit .. Sinn .. B&M ... MB .. are all nice ..

Upper Scale .. $5-10K .. Lots of choice, Safe to buy Rolex & Cartier. Panerai/IWC/Chopard are cool ..

Luxury .. $10K - 20K .. Breguet, Jaeger, GP, GO, Hublot, Zenith ...

High end .. $20K plus .. PP, AP, VC are top 3, AL, Breguet,GO, Piaget, Blancpian .. oh ..

I still hardly justify $100K plus to get a tourbillion .... :banghead:

I love them all ... but .. can only dream of them .. :banghead: :banghead:

^^ i would put Breitling into the upper scale measure... most of their watches retail starting at around 4k+ for a chrono. they are better watches than Rolex's for the same price... they both use Eta blank movements and the Breitlings are all chrono certified.

you also forgot Parmigiani Fleurier in the high end... their watches are beautiful... especially the Bugatti.
