Anyway, to the OP, there is something that you an do:

1) Buy a product called "Mapei Concrete Renew". It will bond right to the surface of the concrete and once it's finished it will look just like it was always there. Very clean finish.

2) Buy a product called "Newlook" and go over the Renew. This comes in a variety of colors and will let you color your driveway. Looks good :)

Unless his driveway is colored (which it probably isn't if he's going to be grinding it down) there's really no need to seal the driveway. In reality, sealer is meant to act as a protectant for various colorings or additives to the concrete.

You can buy tinted sealer, though it's never as good as an actual coloring job.

If it really bothers you too much,.. anything plain to see (grey concrete) will show obvious imperfections.

ah no. A sealer also protects from oil or salt penetrating into the concrete. It also repels moisture. I’m sure you are a knowledgeable guy but I’ll take my Dad’s advice. He’s been in the industry for over45 years with Burnco, Rolling Mix and 4 Star

+1. Not everyone will put on sealer, just because it's kind of expensive, and not entirely necessary, but you'll get a much longer life out of your regular, uncoloured concrete if you seal it

I have an exposed aggregate driveway and front step. It looks so much better after a coat of high gloss sealer. It darkens it just a touch.


I large tub of sealer is only $80 at Northland Construction supplies. Over $100 for a smaller bucket at Rona.

Though sealer will offer limited protection against oil/salt, it really isn't a very effective solution unless you consistently reapply (which I believe is what you were suggesting).

Also, I should mention that there are hundreds of different types of sealers available, so you can't exactly compare sealer based on price. There are different grades, qualities, solvent percentages, etc.

I was speaking specifically regarding sealer as a way to "correct" the imperfections in his driveway.

The product that I recommended goes over top of the concrete and can be finished to be level, becoming the surface of the concrete. The other solution works just as well.

The life expectancy of concrete won't "lengthen" because you've sealed it. Sealing will help protect the finish/color of the concrete, but there's nothing to prevent the concrete from cracking, chipping, etc. The life span of your concrete is directly related to how well it was put in in the first place :)

Probably- it may not have been given enough time to fully cure or something. Who knows these days, especially on older driveways.

I think no matter how well placed concrete is, or if it's sealed, having a bigass bobcat scraping the hell out of it is going to leave a mark :D
