Couple feels neo-Nazis behind firebomb attack

Jason Devine and fiancee Bonnie Collins believe neo-Nazis were behind a firebomb attack on their house. Devine, who was home with his four sleeping children on the night of Feb. 12 when the incident occurred, said he heard a crash, saw fire and called 911.


“It was terrifying to say the least,” said the 27-year-old.


The firebomb missed a rear window and torched a fence and patio set.


Previous interaction with white supremacist groups in Calgary leads the couple to believe this was not a random act of violence.


“We don’t have proof and we don’t want to accuse anyone. But the coincidences are just too much,” said Collins.


Both Collins and Devine are communists and members of Anti-Racist Action Calgary.


Collins is running as a Communist party candidate in the provincial election in Calgary-East, and Devine has run as a member of the Communist party in the past.


Since a protest at City Hall about four months ago, the house has received suspicious phone calls on a regular basis, Collins said.


Collins was not home when the firebomb hit, but said after hearing of the incident, she felt frightened and helpless. “I’m afraid. I do fear,” she said.


“But I will not back down. I will not stop my activity ever.”


Collins said the number of aggressive and open neo-Nazis in Calgary is growing. “It has become alarming. There are a large number of neo-Nazis in the city.”

Actually ideal communism and ideal fascism both want the same goal. Yes, both are at polar opposites of the political spectrum, but they both want the same goal which is a civilization running itself with no system of government in place. Yes this can be broken down further to show why they're still different, but the fact is they both want no system of government in place and the "invisible hand" theory comes into play.

Now onto the real topic: being any sort of exteremist is a bad idea. Have your beliefs, as long as they don't hurt anyone, but quit forcing them on people. The communists are dumb for going to all these protests and pissing off the neo-nazi's and the neo-nazi's are stupid for being racist, hate-mongering assholes. I like your interpretation that this is about ideology more than racism, however, I would suggest that the ideology of the neo-nazis has little in common with facism, but is instead an adoption of racism AS ideology.

This may be expressed in a fascination with a psuedo-Nazi aesthetic, but I would hesitate to mistake this for actual knowledge of, or belief in, fascism. I would doubt that the Neo-nazis have more than a superficial knowledge of political theory.

So, although I agree with you that this is more about ideology than racism, I would suggest that the ideology of the neo-nazis is, in fact, racism itself.

The difference in supremacism and nationalism is basically the same as the difference between Creation and Intelligent Design. One doesn't hide the fact its retarded, the other tries to pass itself off as an innocent and acceptible alternative when its really just the same thing.

In doing so, they de-marginalize their views, and bring them a little closer to the mainstream. Even if 14W.A.R.28 gets flamed mercilessly here, they succeed in bringing discussion of white nationalist views into a popular, mainstream car forum.

The new face of white supremacy is no longer the robes of the KKK, no longer the obvious swastika-clad skinhead nor the camoflage draped militiamen training at rural compunds. It is in more moderate speaking, more 'socially acceptable' proponents who can bring their views out into the light and spark discussion without being tossed back into the shadows.

This is a little much for me. I'm not a communist supporter but regardless people should be able to speak their mind and run for office so long as it doesn't impinge on the rights of others. In principle, I'm not against being proud of one's ethnicity, but I can't help but feel this is somewhat of a consolation prize.
