'08 335i USB question

All,

I have an '08 e90 with Logic7, no idrive/navi and there's a USB port with a cord in the arm rest console. I thought I could just plug my ipod into it, either into the port or into the cord but doing both gives the same result ... nothing. Says to insert USB.

If I can't do this what is the USB for a stick?

Any help appriciated.

It's pretty retarded that we need to buy the cable from BMW rather than it being included at time of purchase, well, it makes sense for BMW lol.

I believe the part is ~$100 from the dealership.

Serious? That's odd, seems useless that its not even ipod ready. I've heard only a few drives work so I'll be after the Y-cable.

Does it tive pretty decent functionality?

Also where's the best place to get one, I'd rather pay a few bucks more and get higher quality ...

You can only get it from BMW.

Any USB thumb drive works. I used to do that before I got a cable. That way, I just leave it in the car without fear of losing it or getting stolen.

You can only get the cable at BMW, but check out the marketplace over at e90post. Sometimes people sell them for about 50 bucks. Also, ebay has them for a lot less. Its $100 at the dealership.
