Fuck it..... I love these cars, and a deal/trade came up on a Generation 2 kit. Picking it up next month, hope to have her done Spring 2013 ;)

I'll be asking you guys opinions on paint colours, options etc as I go. For now, this is what a typical completed car looks like.....

Have prices come down at all? Last I looked at them, they were $100g +or- , but that was before Ford produced the GT.

It's a Factory Five GTM. It comes with it's own unique chassis, Body, electircal, glass, interior etc. Suspension and steering donor parts etc are from a C6 Z06 Vette.

Completed cars weigh in at ~2400 pounds.

My first impulse?? Destroked Aluminum LS Engine with Twin Turbos. No crazy power, more for durability. The cars are light. Maybe ~600rwhp

I would take that bet if you had something more desirable than your nuts ;)

It's a GTM kit..... can be built "bare bones" for ~$45,000. They estimate 800 hours total build time, seems hight though.... :dunno: Fully "tricked" out, guys are spending $100k....

That view does look like a GT40. Here is a side shot with roof vent, splitter and rear ricer spoiler.

It all makes sense now! You bought the one off the marketplace and that thing is somewhat assembled already,so yeah 2013 seems like a reasonable time frame :burnout:

Good god, what have I got myself into.... lol.

Picked it up today. Nice 17 hour round trip to Saskatchewan.....

Here it is, packing it all into the trailer

Unloaded into my garage

http://members.shaw.ca/thedyno/parts1.jpg

And I would like to call to your attention the approximately 200+ pieces of sheetmetal on the 4 shelves. Good grief. Better get a electric rivet gun.

Oh yeah, the instruction manual is about 2.5" thick.

First step is a complete inventory of all the parts, make sure nothing is missing, and figure out what donor parts are still needed.

Sweet! I agree with the Grey color.... some black wheels

This may be a dumb question but when you're done is this car going to be road legal? If so what sort of steps are involved in making it so? I assume it's more comprehensive than a simple OOP.

I think since the chassis and body already comply with transport Canada's regulations and all the parts are legal, all you need is an inspection (to check headlights seatbelts and other saftey stuff) and insurance before the province issues you a VIN.

Shit... I know. There is a large hang-up with the transaxle. The reccomended Porsche ones do not handle the torque I want to make, and are geared completely wrong for a wide powerband V8.

I hate shifting, so I want very wide gear ratios. They can custom build a Porsche box with what I want for gearing, but we are talking $20k all said and done.

The Ricardo box that comes in the Ford GT is stupid cheap when they are available with a production run at "only" $8500, but there are no new ones now.

The Mendeola box is weak, and bad ratios, the upgraded one is like $12,500 and backordered. Guys have waited a year after putting down a deposit.

There was another option being advertised for about $10k, but so far it is vapour ware and no one has seen the box in real life.

In retrospect this is a cool car if you build it to their spec with a naturally aspirated 500hp engine

Pretty soon I will decide if I will just build this thing to 500hp and live with it, won't be bad at 2500 pounds.

I have all the other donor parts now. Only thing missing are wheels and brakes.

You don't want a Ricardo. They're all rebuilt units now and the only guy who knew how to rebuild them (in the UK) is dead. Apparently RPM transmissions has worked on a few of them in the past though.

If you try to ask Ricardo (manufacturer) for assistance they'll tell you to pound sand.

Wish I never bought it to be honest....it's like a ticking time bomb. Apparently Ford has a few left overs, but they're hoarding them for f-gts since their service idea if an issue arises is to just junk the transaxle and replace it rather than repair it.

I'm using a built 930 gearbox for my 917 ..... 700hp ... 4 speed gearbox. Fun times. If I were buying another transaxle for a moderate hp build (600-800hp) I'd use a 930 for sure. Plus they're fairly light, I believe around 90lbs ... Ricardo is 200lbs.

Yeah... the 930 box was what I was gonna use but clutch set up is wrong for this car. Inferior weaker synchros. I really like the idea of 4 speeds though with a powerfull motor.

Looking like its gonna be the g50.52 5 speed from the early 90s turbo porsches. It will have to do.

As for the Ricardo. Its the best shift feel and I personally know guys pounding 1500hp through them without issue.

M.alex
04-12-2013, 09:52 AM
Don't get me wrong- the Ricardo can handle a shit load of power and shifts great. I have 0 complaints with mine. Drives great. BUT if something happens mechanically to it, you're more-than-likely going to be out of luck. The vast majority of Ricardos right now that are not in ford GTs are repaired units, so obviously shit happens to them. (with the remainder being out of wrecked cars or I think some people were dumb enough to pa Ford $25k for a new one when they were selling them at one point)

By the sounds of it, you've got some time to think about it but for paint, I'd go something like this:
