Hey guys,

I started this thread quite some time ago on clublexus.com, and figured I would show the beyond crew as well.

My girlfriend is doing a custom sharpie engine cover for me, she is a talented girl with her hands  and this is a very different medium than she is used to.

she ran into some issues with the sharpie "spreading" in the grooves on the F cover, however she overcame them and I think the cover looks great so far.

1. lightly buff and primer with a white high build primer.
2. paint with 4 coats of flat white paint
3. lightly wetsand base coat
4. sharpie away
5. professionally clearcoat
6. install F symbol
7. rock it in the engine bay!

Currently she is just putting the finishing touches on the cover, and I will have the symbol and clear coat finalized in the next few weeks.

If you used regular sharpies they're gonna bleed with the clear coat. just a warning.

What are you supposed to use?

What are you supposed to use? I've done alot of sharpie work, entire motorcycles, cars, basically everything under the sun and in those travels, i had alot of botched projects from regular sharpies. What you need to do is spend $6 on a sharpie oil based paint pen. They come in super fine, fine, and large and jumbo sizes prices start at $6.

That's what I use, because it doesn't bleed, its weather resistant and doesnt run when clear coat is applied.

With this lexus engine cover, it will bleed, and if you draw over top with oil based sharpies, the old sharpies will run under neath it so my best suggestion/advice is to just leave it alone and once it wears out redo it with oil based sharpies.

Here is a shot from a fairing of an entire bike im doing for another beyonder. You can see here that the sharpie is alot more darker and crisper, and once i spray clear coat i can use aerosal or automotive clear coat and it wont bleed and run.

another thing you want to avoid is using aerosal clear coat on regular sharpies, there is nothing you can do with aerosal that will prevent bleeding/running.

You can also use these markers on anything, like straight on the paint of a vehicle and it will stay there for a long time.

or you can buy vinyl toys like dunny or munny and draw on those too.

Davex,

What if we used the sharpie on a matte base? Think it will still run? The silver and gold are oil based however the other sharpies are not

I'll second that warning. A friend of mine works auto body/custom stuff, and a customer brought in a helmet that was signed in a regular sharpie by some team. My friend clear coated it, and yep, it ran all over the place. SO, the guy had to get the helmet resigned, and then from what I remember, my friend did multiple LIGHT coats of whatever it was he was using in the first place to clear coat it, and it was fine. But you might as well go for the oil base sharpie's right away.

The oil base as Davex said, is pretty hard to remove. I mean you can get chemicals that will do it, but I use them alot for my own artwork on plexiglass and to remove it I have to use a special x-acto blade. In summary, they're way more permanent than regular sharpies. Come to think of it, they might even be good to use as touch up paint if you can match the color...

As for the engine cover, since it's already been made... maybe don't clear coat it, and see how long it lasts under there? I dunno how well the regular sharpies will handle heat (perhaps Davex can comment)

no way.. matte white in an engine bay.. think about it

I was also thinking about doing very very light coats of clear coat.for the first coat or 2 and then going from there.

toma - acrylic clear makes it bleed worse :/ i've been through all types of lacquers and clear coats, my advice is accurate from experience, dont want to see something nice get ruined

I really appreciate the advice, thanks for the heads up before I ruined the gf's work.

I am going to paint a texture piece of plastic, sharpie it and test ppg clear coat. I looked around online and there seems to be several products for sealing permeable surfaces such as this.

I was also considering 3m protect, however there are too many shapes in the cover I believe

I was just thinking of the regular sharpies, not the paint underneath. My bad

(minus clear coat, taking that dive soon) If you use a paint gun with a urethane clear (think car clear coat) and very light coats andi mean super super light with a 5-10 min flash time in between each coat, you're going to be okay. If you get the paint gun and the clear coat i can come over and spray it for you if you want!
