Power engineering by correspondence?

I have applied to Sait for the power engineering program, however, it does not start until next fall. I just noticed they offer this program via correspondence as well, which appeals to me as I can start right away. I have heard that getting field experience which is required for your ticket can be the difficult part. Where as in class at Sait, you obtain the required time through lab work.

Has anyone gone through the correspondence route for power engineering? Anyone in the industry have insight as to how to get the required field time?
