Can it be done?
Meaning can someone work a full time job and go do a degree at night?
Or is the only option having a crap job and struggling for 4 years??

Depends I guess? Lots of correspondence options. Also how hard do you want to work? Lots of people manage getting an MBA while holding down their careers. I guess the biggest key would be to find an employer that is willing to work around your school schedule... Even better if they help cover costs ;)

Yep, of course it can be done. Depends on the type of person you are.
Also, maybe you want to spread out the time you finish the degree. Does it have to be done in 4 years? If you can extend the period, a little less workload can help a lot.

I pretty much did the last 3 years of my business degree at the UofC working full time and taking courses at night. There was the odd class that I would have to take in the day though. I would basically choose option courses that fit my schedule rather than what I was interested in.

My sister's doing that, works full time as a draftsperson and is doing a managment/education bachelor's outside of that. She has the priviledge of being able to move her work hours around though so she can make day classes and stuff. But she's working/studying literally all day and night and weekend, which is something I could never do. Hell I have a bad enough time trying to study for cfa exams outside work.

Wish you could go to law school at night! Haha
Most courses aimed at older people/cottoning education are at night, go searching through All the school websites.

are some offered online? Ultimately that would be my best case scenario.

Not sure how widely respected it is, but Athabasca University is a fairly well recognized online university.

I got my University degree this way, worked 8-5, school 6-9. Wasn't hard at all other than the lack of social life you will have during the week. If you need to keep your foot in the door somewhere I would recommend it for sure.

This^^
OP, Just remember that after your 8-9 hour work day and three hours of lectures there will be homework/more school to be done if you want to do well. Imagine doing that five days a week for minimum four months at a time.
It's definitely possible, but I personally would not want to go through it again.

It's a challenge, but it can be done.
I've been working full time since 2005 and completed a BA honours degree in 2007 while going to the U of C part time. I then enrolled (again, on a part time basis) for the MA in economics program at the U of C in the fall of 2007 and just successfully defended my thesis earlier this month -- all while concurrently working full time. My goal was to be done with formal schooling before I'm 30 and it looks like I've just been able to pull it off :) . School while working full-time is doable, but it certainly wasn't a walk in the park.
I was fortunate that my employer gave me the flexibility to work around my class schedule because the majority of my classes were not at night (actually, only one out of the 6 I took for my MA was in the evening).

Depends on what type of a degree as well. Not really possible to do an engg degree at UofC or UofA at night because all of the courses are held during the day. But even if it was possible, I definitely would not recommend it unless you could spread it out over 6 yrs or something.
