I've been looking for one of these cars in decent shape for over 6 years, i've finally found one in half decent shape that I liked. I'm the 4th owner of this Z. Previous owner owned it for 4 years and bought it from one of the Datsun club members, he had owned it for 20 years.

I have a few things planned out for it already!

Lol, so just because I don't have to do a ground up restoration it means that i'm not building it? Get real.

I'm not planning on swapping out the engine. At the most it'll see an L28.....definitely staying L series.

(edit) not positive if that was the green 240z for sale on kijiji a week or so ago, if it is, that seemed like a really good price.
I've had my s30 for a little over a year now, they are definitely fun cars, and really turn heads. My only complaint is the exhaust smell in the cabin when a window is open.

I have the L28 in mine currently, and it's really nothing special. I'm planning on going SR20det or rb25det when I'm ready for a swap in a year or two.

lol, so you aren't restoring it, or touching the motor > let me guess > wheels (low offset herra frush), air, lip (at most)...

ercchry
06-12-2013, 01:19 PM
nah, my guess is some nice old school wheels, static suspension, shaved bumpers. ridiculous custom tig welded header/exhaust... and some crazy intake setup.. then bride seats :D

then a few super rare JDM aftermarket pieces from way back here and there...

and if a power polish doesnt bring the paint to a mirror finish... new paint

Almost insulting Jeremy, and you're wrong. Even if I planned on just doing that, at least it would be build with authentic legit parts, and not replica garbage that everyone else seems to use.

I never said I'm not touching the motor, I'm just not going to swap it. This car will always have an L series under the hood. I plan on doing a couple tweaks on the L24, and I'll probably overhaul it sometime in the near future.

I will repaint it eventually. I'm not really down with the color, and I want to eliminate the sunroof and the door moldings. The car was originally orange, so you can still see some of the original color under the hood and in a few spots. As far as restoration, it's in really great shape with absolutely no rust, so there really isn't much left to do.

Eric is spot on. It's just a sunday cruiser.

low offset wheels VS. JDM oldschool (they better be battleships if what I wrote insulted you)
air VS. static
lip > pretty spot on... should have said authentic and JDM more i suppose

Will be a nice project, Don't get your jimmies in a jimmy lol

Authentic??

lol. But whhhyyy??

Here is the Authentic beast I am tuning today. This engine, because it very original, is worth $60,000+

But you can build a BETTER one, with stronger parts, that will make more power for half the money.

Nostalgia is for old guys ;)

Do you run Authentic ECU's and tuning as well? You using an old analog Vane dyno?? ;)

How about an LS....7? I hear that's a more powerful N/A L series engine.

Authentic (imo) is a term generally thrown around to impress nerds at car shows. You pay a hefty premium to have those JDM YO parts.

And I don't get the dichotomy. Authenitic appearance stuff, but who cares about the engine stuff?

We need a clearer definition of what "Authenticity" means, and what parts it matters for, and which it doesn't.....just so we don't get "yelled" at again :poosie:

Yeah you're right, using authentic parts is just to impress nerds at car shows. Rota is the exact same product as Volk. Might as well buy everything from ebay, but then my car would look like yours.

I'm not concerned with making big power on this car, it's just a Sunday cruiser.

Authenticity meaning exactly it's definition Toma. Not replica wheels or flares, not replica body pieces, no knockoff chinese shit.

ercchry
06-13-2013, 03:06 PM
i think Toma is looking at is as in authentic oem pieces... not in the knock-off free sense.

but an OS Giken 410hp engine would kill the whole "sunday cruiser" theme

Yeah, was thinking OEM = Authentic.

To me, aftermarket = non oem = non authentic.

But I get it now. he means brand name, but not just any brand name, only some brand names are authentic ??? lol

JZS_147
06-13-2013, 03:19 PM
It's not feasible. That engine is a solid 40k, and supposedly they're only building 6 of them haha.

I will eventually overhaul the engine and do a few modifications. Some 40mm Mikuni or Webers, cam, upgraded springs, oil pump, header, exhaust. Something along those lines. Maybe this winter? We'll see.

Haha..nothing on my car is from asia/ebay lol. Great assumption there.

Anyone else find irony in the "no knockoff chinese shit" seeing as how a large % of beyonders with imports are...asian? :poosie:

I don't personally see the value in spending $400 on a carbon fibre whale penis intake for a 180 hp civic..but what do I know!

Pretty much man lol.

Thank you. And yes I'll post updates as I go.

Plans for this weekend:
-Koyo Aluminum Race Rad
-280z elec distributor, getting rid of the shitty points ignition
-NGK wires and new plugs
-clean up the carbs and tune them

JZS_147
07-03-2013, 10:50 PM
Small update.

Installed the Koyo race rad, 280z distributor with electric ignition system, new ngk wires and plugs, balanced the carbs, and installed my new suspension setup. Car sits a lot lower now, used a Ground Control coilover kit, and Tokico Yellow Santa short stroke shocks (very very rare).

Lower ride height looks much better, looks like you switched up wheels as well.

Some webers, and a 3.1L stroker kit and you'll be set

A 3.1 would be nice but it won't make much power here. Hell, the price of that build you can properly do a RB26 with mods.

I love the L6 but I would not do a stroker kit unless I had tons of stupid money to throw at a 40 year old engine.

The cutting and welding is pretty straight forward...not much else for options for these old cars.

Argosta - expensive and hard to get...one day I will have that setup
Tein - garbage
Star Road - hard to get, 12+wks lead time
Ohlins - $$$$$$$$$$
Bilstein - Doesn't go low enough for me

For the $450 shipped i paid for my GC's, and then getting those short stroke tokico's for a good deal, I'm happy with my suspension. You can't buy anything better for the price I paid. Better than Megan / Ksport and all that other Taiwan junk.

I've started building an L28 for it, put some parts on order last week:

-Rebello spec JE pistons
-Rebello 142mm rods
-Rebello offset grind crank
-ARP Main Studs
-ARP Headstuds
-ACL Race bearings
-Rebello Crank Damper
-123Ignition Electronic Distributor

Head is being sent to Rebello to be ported, unshrouded and assembled.
-Rebello Supertech Valves
-Rebello Supertech Springs
-Rebello Ti retainers
-Rebello grind Isky camshaft
-Rebello Supertech Springs

Also sending everything to get WPC treated before final assembly. Displacement should end up around 3L, and I'm running 12-12.5:1 compression.

This setup is focussed towards a top end powerband of 3500RPM+ and set up to Rev to around 8500-9000rpm. Can't wait. These engines sound amazing at high RPM.
