You can update the maps, but not the firmware.

Maps can be bought from navteq

What year?

Easy, on CCC you get the DVD torrent, burn and put into car.

CIC, you download torrent onto three USB sticks. Get FSC code online for 39 bucks and DIY for 45 mins. Easy.

Do a google search, lots on E90 post about this.

Some cars in 09 cant do the USB update because of old software, if you have an updated firmware on CIC from dealer then you can.

I think you can actually update the entire cars firmware yourself now

http://www.bmw.com/com/en/owners/connected_drive_services/mobile_devices/bluetooth_software_update.html

And I believe newer cars only need single USB (32gb supported)

i did my cic myself, paid $50 for the code and the guy provided the correct code and torrent link for the maps. 2015-1 came out last month, so make sure your getting the newest. you can download the code generators to generate the codes yourself, but they aren't updated for the newest maps yet (that i could find).

heres where i got it:

Does anyone know if ARTTI is available as an aftermarket option?

You need ConnectedDrive for ARTII

Adding those options is supposedly very difficult. Same with reading traffic signs. I heard a rumor of a pending bmw "App Store" allowing you to add features to your car.
