View Full Version : Is there a way to format an XBox-OS formatted HDD?

I had a 1TB HDD attached to my XBoxOne, and had my game storage on it. I've since moved to a 3TB HDD, for future expansion. However, the stock Windows format tool will not read, or format the old 1TB HDD. It sees it as an XBox-OS drive, but I cannot write or read anything on it. Can I format it so that I can use it as a HDD backup for my laptop?

Should be able to. I just reformatted my 1tb that I was using with my one. No problems with OS X. There should be another app you can download that will format it on Windows

Any ideas on Windows options?

Gparted should work. Its a bootable CD or USB if you lack that.

Open disk management under admin tools, select the drive, delete the partition, format with a new partition

This, no need to mess around with gparted.

Thanks guys. I didn't see the last two posts, I was busy working with gparted. It worked. I now have a usable portable drive again.

On a different note, what did you end up getting for a 3 TB HDD? I'm in the same boat where my Xbox One is also filling up fast. I'll likely need external storage soon once I get a few more games.

Got it at Costco for $129.99. I figure 3TB should do it for a few years.:D
