Both Caterham and Marussia have entered administration and are sitting out.

3 car teams next year?

That's sad. I'd be fine with 3 car teams, but it'd be great to see Honda or BMW re-enter the game.

Or Audi (2016).
Audi is rumoured to be considering a switch to Formula 1 in 2016, ditching the DTM series and the FIA World Endurance Championship.

That sucks for Marrusia, and their hard earned 2 points. They're guaranteed a pretty big constructors standings payout at the end of the year (compared to their budget), but they lose out on that if they miss any race. Russia was an exemption when they ran 1 car.

I thought Marussia will only get the this year's price money if they race next year? And that teams are allowed to miss 3 races per year as per their contract with Bernie.
Can't remember where I read it from... I'll try to find it.

Never came to mind that Q1 is pointless now with 2 teams out. I wonder what the stewards will come up with as an amendment.

I read somewhere that they're adjusting it so 4 cars are out of Q1 and 4 cars are out of Q2. The rules apparently allow them to change it when the total # of cars drop.

Found it.

However, the FIA Sporting Regulations include the provision for changing the number of cars that are eliminated. The numbers specifically referred to are eight for a 26-car entry, and seven for a 24 car entry. It follows that with an 18-car entry four cars would be bumped from Q1 and Q2.

The regulations refer to the size of the ‘championship’ entry rather than that for an individual race. However sources confirm that once the stewards have officially been notified that only 18 cars are in the Austin field they will have the option to decree that four cars are eliminated in Q1 and Q2.

Might be a 17 car Q1 as Vettel/Red Bull plan to skip qualifying and start with all new power unit components taking all penalties at once and starting from pit lane.

How does that even work? He's replacing every component, which should be enough grid spot penalties to stack up to start him last till the end of the year. Is there a loophole there or something where there's no grid spot penalties if you start from pit lane?

My limited understanding is that if you take a 6th individual component you take a ten place grid penalty. where as if you take a 6th complete engine you start from the pit lane. Makes no sense whatsoever.
