I've been thinking about this for a while. If you could pick any job that you could start tomorrow what would you choose?

I would be a golf club designer/ engineer. Work for taylormade as I would be busy all the time with new product.

Your turn!

I've wondered about this before. Honestly, a lot of the most exciting jobs, I don't think I'd actually enjoy.

Something like a combo of
Board member on a couple oil and gas companies, part time trainer/mentor of junior O&G engineers.

I think this is achievable, I'm actually moving in that direction. Board member is the ultimate "not quite retired" job. Not terribly taxing, but pretty good pay and perks.

I actually love my current job. I get to do design / programming for a variety of control systems, big and small. Every project has it's own challenges. I get a mixture of office time, time at the clients office testing, and site time for install.

Also my office is amazing, super flexible about anything if I need to do a late start / short day / not make it into work because of appointment or whatever. So long as my work gets done by the deadline and I make up hours eventually they're plenty happy.

Photojournalist for a motorcycle magazine. I've met a few that get paid to travel around the world on their bikes and take photos of the highlights of their epic journeys. Everything is paid for, just travel and ride for a living while providing lots of trip info to others that want to go on such trips. Or something like Rick Steves who travels around the world showcasing trips for his tv series.

Building hot rods/street rods and bikes would be damn cool too. I'd like to be a fab tech for Skunk works.... which is NASA's experimental technologies division.

I manage a team of web developers and copywriters. I get to decide how our websites are built and deployed. I make the strategic decisions on content placement and layout, technology and features. I review user behaviour and interaction reports, and adjust the strategy accordingly.

And someone else does the actual development.

So I get to basically test out new ideas and strategies without having to put in the grunt work.

I love it.

I currently really do like my job... but it could be better.

I wish I had more responsibility, and I wish that I was able to run/manage small research projects.

But my dream job would be racing and/or fielding a race team. When I am retired, this is what I will do to bring in extra cash on the side while living off my retirement savings (race team manager/have my shop setup to maintain and run others cars while doing my own racing on the side). It won't bring in much money, but that's the point; it will provide purpose and fun with a little bit of extra coin for retirement. Win-win, sounds like a dream to me!

I'm more into the offroad side of things, I'm hoping to get into desert racing in the next couple of years as that seems to be where the big boys play!

There is a difference between practicality and reality. The reality is a lot of people can't pursue their dream jobs because it just isn't practical. If you have a family or a mortgage to pay you can't drop your stable job to pursue being a poet.

The reality is some people enjoy their day jobs and work on their hobbies after work hours. Those who can make a career out of their hobbies.. Well that's a rarity and power to those people.

I have no sympathy for people that say they hate their job, or that they wish they had instead done something amazing with their life. I spent 4 years in university and 11 years in graduate school in order to land the career that I have. I'm extremely fortunate, as the chances of making it from grad school into my profession are very, very low. I lived on a relatively small salary for many years and had to relocate across the continent multiple times. So yea, I have to chuckle when I hear people complain that it's impossible to do something the want to do.

the movers and shakers of the world didn't get there by luck, they got there by hard work and determination. as i said before, the only thing limiting any of you from approaching your dream is your own hesitation.

Most people are missing the point. It's not actually achieving the dream job, it's how far you can get Persuing it that's rewarding.

Seperate reality and fantasy, but shoot for almost unreachable goals to achieve all the goals inbetween.

If everyone could do anything they wanted everyone would be an NBA superstar or NHL player. You are missing the point.

Not everyone is capable of doing their "dream" job. If everyone could be amazing there wouldn't be any differentation between people.

Part of being successful is natural talent. You either have it or you don't. You can't train me enough to be a good singer to any degree. You are being extremely naive in thinking everyone can do anything they want.

Further to that point, that everyone's ideal dream job exists.

Some peoples idea of a dream job is another's idea of a degenerate.

Ultimately, I will feel as though I have achieved my dream job if I get to participate in a large project that involves many people being aligned to realize a transcendent goal. Kinda like working to put a man on the moon, or develop a particle smasher. A great public works.

In my case, its to compete at the highest level of automotive excellence. To be a part of the foundation that future generations can build on.
