Ordered parts for my next project.

https://www.factoryfive.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/DSC_3051-694x413.jpg

I fully expect this project to take 2 years to complete. I found a 2003 50th Anniversary Corvette C5 in Ontario and a kit to build out of California.

The Factory Five GTM is a build-it-yourself supercar. Based on tough Corvette C5 running gear, and merged with lightweight composite body and extremely rigid tubular steel chassis.

“…the car trips to 60 MPH in three seconds flat and clears the quarter-mile in 11.0 seconds at 132 miles per hour. And that, amigos, is quicker than a Porsche Carrera GT, a Ferrari 599 Fiorano, and a Z06 Corvette.”

Congrats on picking up one of these kits, I love the finished product, don't know if I could ever put so many hours into a project like this.

I was thinking about buying a used kit out of the US but it turns out you cant buy these cars used from the USA. A kit car cannot be imported if it comes with certain parts. Steering Rack, Engine, Trans, shocks, brakes, etc all cant be imported if they are on the car.

@ $53K that guy is losing a substantial amount of cash.... unless he cheaped out on the components.

That looks like a sweet start, looking forward to seeing updates!

I vote get a custom titanium exhaust by revhard. That would be an amazing upgrade and local :D

If you need any special or modified parts I would love to donate some time to this project. I just had the spindle on my mill rebuilt down in Portland but no cool parts to make!

I was toying with the idea of bolting a twin turbo setup onto the LS1, to be honest the only thing holding me back was the exhaust setup, it would be super tight...

Looks like Revhard hasn't posted anything to this forum in over a year...

I may have to take you up on that. There are a few places that I could use some Milled parts. The rear hatch hardware that i have isn't very flashy, and a milled piece around where the exhaust passes though would be killer....

I am a ways away from that, for now I am working toward driving the chassis (no body mounted)...

Awesome build, the car should be a ton of fun once done. And actually come to think of it the build should be a lot of fun to.

Will this thing be road legal here in Canada once done or will this be a track only car?

I'd love to do a Factory Five kit build some day, though perhaps just an 818R.

Yes it will be road legal, there are a few minor modifications that need to be made before it can be registered in Canada.

I was going to build an 818 was looking for the Subaru but in the end went the extra mile and decided go build the GTM.

Reinstalled the lift today (its been close to 28 days since i poured the new concrete). I had a little fun lifting the frame up and down a few times, for now its not directly on the center of balance (i couldn't move the frame alone). I rented a hammer drill, it didn't go as well as planned and ended up taking 4 hours to drill all the holes.... I broke 4 crappy drill bits, getting them back out of the holes is not easy.... I should have bought better bits.

http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=39971&d=1427516435

And in the afternoon the first portion of my Canadian GTM kit came in the mail... $270 in customs fees.... ouch...

Box has

The brake lines (2 sizes)
4 shocks, 4 springs, 4 spring hats, 4 adjustment collar
Painless harness
Slave cylinders
Gas Caps
Gas filler hoses

Still missing the steering rack and some of the shock parts.
http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=39972&d=1427516436

I plan to start taking my Garage door apart tomorrow to convert it to high lift. (can't do much on the car until my aluminum comes back from the powder coater.)

Moved everything today across town into an empty garage that someone let me use. Threw the scoop on top to see how it would look. All of the boxes for the interior, body, glass, seats, etc fit inside the car.

I have louvers for the tops of the wheel wheels, Carbon fiber splitter and side skirts, carbon fiber rear wing and carbon fiber diffuser.. was tempted to put them on the body as well but i will save that for another day.

Really at a stand still until my parts come back from powder coating.

tanderson1
03-30-2015, 07:57 PM
Powder coater called, all parts are ready for pickup tomorrow, ended up totaling $600. (double the quote but i figured it was going to be $600)

Had a crappy day at work, it started by the other managers and I laying off our entire department, ended with me getting laid off.. lucky for me I have worked for that company for 10 years so my severance will more then cover the complete cost for this car... so thanks work, you bought me a car!

Severance works weird at this company so it looks like I get 11 months of pay but its contingent on me not working for those 11 months, I don't have to look for a job i just have to not work. So it looks like i will have some time to finish this car.

not the best day but the end result is money to pay my bills, and time to finish my car.... I guess i can get used to that

Dumbass17
03-31-2015, 11:34 AM
sorry to hear about the job but that's wicked you have all this steady time to smash out this car. can't wait!

ExtraSlow
03-31-2015, 12:25 PM
I've heard of severance benefits of that type, although I think they aren't the norm. Something like that is more common (I think) after a wrongful dismissal type situation.

Anyway, use that time to build the car AND look for a new job with a start date 11 months in the future. Lay some groundwork in your network in the first few months.

Looking forward to lots of updates on the build.

Took a couple days to get my life back in order, went for an interview, have another next week. While sitting at home for a year and getting paid sounds amazing it my be increasingly hard to get a job with that long of a gap in my resume. I still haven't decided but I may go back to work if an opportunity presents itself.

Back to the car....

I received the LCD screen that i would like to use for the dash, I still have to test it out and find an LVDS adapter to drive it via HDMI. I plan to take the screen out of this plastic housing and build it into the gauge cluster. I still have to make sure that the screen is high enough and that i can draw detailed gauges within its resolution.

http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=40183&d=1428083045 http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=40184&d=1428083046 http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=40186&d=1428083049 http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=40187&d=1428083050 http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=40188&d=1428083051
A concrete company came on Tuesday to fix a void under my garage floor, they helped me carry the GTM frame out to the lawn and they started drilling 17 3" holes in the floor in a grid pattern. Once drilled we could see that the problem was even worse toward the back of the garage where there was almost a solid 12" of air under the 2" slab. They then used a high pressure pump to push concrete into the holes. You can even start to see water and concrete start to squish up through the cracks in the floor. The whole operation took 2 hours and cost $1800.

All of the parts are now back from the powder coaters and ready to be riveted to the car. They look amazing. I ended up going with the semi-gloss black, total cost ended up being $600

$600 seems like a great price for all that, where did you get your powder coating done?

Sick project, I'm sure it will be a ton of work, but will be an amazing finished product.

Well... Now you have a garage slab :) No minimum code for you!

Did they determine why there was soo much air under? Water running it away somewhere?

So i was able to spend a solid 8-10 hours on the car today, Some of those hours were spend running around town for parts... a great progress day regardless

Started by riveting and siliconing the aluminum around the suspension parts
http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=40265&d=1428214132 http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=40266&d=1428214133 http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=40267&d=1428214134 http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=40268&d=1428214135

Took a brake from that for a while and tried to fit the shock mount to the lower A arm, it hit the side of the A-arm and wouldn't mount all the way in. I used a cutoff wheel to take off 1/16th or so of an inch... I had to repeat this for the other side as well.
http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=40269&d=1428214136 http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=40270&d=1428214152 http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=40271&d=1428214154 http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=40272&d=1428214155

These are the spacers that attach to the bolt that holds the strut. The spacers are not large enough to fit over the bolt, I will need to drill the spacers out a little larger.
http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=40274&d=1428214157

These bolts still need to be torqued to spec but all 4 suspension assemblies are now mounted.

Week two of waiting on some key parts to arrive like the steering rack and shock hats.

According to the shipping information the core parts should be here tomorrow, with a second shipment arriving on Thursday.

this car is fairly small, think lotus size, because of the size the order in which parts are mounted is important, I have to fit the steering rack in next, so i can figure out where to mount the battery, I then need to figure out how the steering will mount around the battery.

My hope is that the mounting the steering first wont get in the way of the peddle assemblies that i plan to mount next....

If all goes to plan it should be rolling and steering by next week.... then next week can be brake lines and E-Brake install. Followed by the aircond Vintage Air system and then the engine/trans/cooling system/fuel system/clutch/shifter/ecu... then maybe a few sideways trip around the block before the body gets fitted on.

Work asked me not to come back when they found out the company that i plan on going to.... so i had a whole day today. I used most of the time to get caught up, trip to the dump, return some broken stuff, register my motorcycle, go for a ride (nicest day of the year so far).

Finished off mounting the shocks on all 4 corners and mounting the wheel spacers.
http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=40717&d=1429242971 http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=40718&d=1429242973 http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=40719&d=1429242974

I have to figure out something here... the rear tie rod end's adjustability is at its limit yet the tire is still pointed toward the outside of the car. its possible that I need to buy a different tie rod end that has a longer shaft.
http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=40722&d=1429242978

I couldn't resist mounting the rear wheels and getting a feel for how sweet this is going to look.

Tomorrow i plan on getting foot box aluminum completed, steering in and peddles mounted.

tanderson1
04-19-2015, 08:51 PM
I was close to Princess Auto so i used that as an excuse to buy a stool, brake line bending tools, brake line cutter, punch set, flare nut wrenches, etc.
http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=40776&d=1429495970

Started on the steering assembly, I started by counting out all the parts, everything was there. Started measuring and drilling, got to the step with the shear pin and it must have rolled away. Can't find the damn thing anywhere. Now i have to figure out where to buy one.
http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=40777&d=1429496084 http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=40778&d=1429496085 http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=40779&d=1429496087

So attention shifted again... this time to the garage door. In took 4 of us 4 hours to finish the high lift door conversion. Now i can lift my truck to the limits of the lift.
http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=40783&d=1429496686 http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=40784&d=1429496687 http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=40785&d=1429496688 http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=40786&d=1429496967

I also had time to mount a retractable trouble lite from the roof that i bought a few years back
http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=40787&d=1429497014

Followed all that up by resorting some boxes and cleaning up the whole garage again.

all in all not a ton of car progress today but some great garage progress.
