I've always wanted one of these cars and I finally found a good one!

Originally my gf's boss owned this car, he was the second owner and had it since 2005. We've done some good mods on it at VEX over the last few years and it's been maintained quite well.

2003 M3 Coupe
49,843km's
Silver Grey Metallic, with Black Interior
6SPD Manual

Modifications:
-ESS VT500 supercharger kit, upgraded to 8psi pulley
-OS Giken STR2CD clutch
-Dixis Spirit Japan handmade full titanium exhaust
-H&R lowering springs
-Carbon fibre lip
-Odyssey PC1700 Battery

Stuff I've done since purchase:
-Installed OEM aux port in factory deck
-Installed OEM leather shift boot and UUC shift knob
-Vortech S/C service

Stuff I've bought and will be done shortly:
-ST XTA coilovers
-Rays G07EX wheels
-Endless MX72 brake pads
-Endless RF-650 fluid
-UUC double shear selector rod
-UUC clutch pedal pivot bushings
-UUC brake pedal pivot bushings
-UUC clutch damper delete
-BMW short shift lever
-Turner Motorsports rear subframe re-enforcement kit

Lonely pic for now:

Looks like a cherry example with low mileage for the E46 so congrats on it! Surprised to hear the blower already needed service, what is the required mileage and intervals for service on these?

Has the car ever had the valves adjusted? I would look into that...

Why the RAYS wheels? I get that they're strong and light but are over done/used on all marques?

Also, how much power does this car make on your dyno?

its actually a departure for him

if i had to guess though i'd say its cause they were in stock from rays usa and he can get them in time for this season where as a custom 3 piece wheel ordered now wont be showing up for 6-12 months. but dont fret... he changes wheels like he changes his underwear so you'll probably see a few different sets on this car as he builds it

One of the best examples of an inline 6 soundtrack. I can't decide if they sound better coming or going, the intake on those is glorious.

Vortechs require a first service at 3500km's, and every 12000km's after.

I'll be doing a valve adjustment this year.

G07EX's aren't overdone. BBS on the other hand....

For all you OG's, some old skool flow: HKS Super Intake
https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8740/16551501553_6c38b5b003_b.jpg

Last week I put in a couple of gauges. Innovate LC2 wideband with red dB gauge, and LSU4.9 upgrade, and a STACK Pro Control boost gauge. ATi pod setup.

https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8781/16970200730_119309b7a2_b.jpg

Bought a nice set of wheels. Wanted something that was light, cheap, available right away, authentic, and quality. These are the 57Motorsports G07EX made by Rays.

Brand new release from KW, their budget lineup of coilovers labelled "ST Suspensions." Most of you know the name, previously their only coilover model was a KW V1 with a coated steel body (instead of inox stainless steel). Valving, springs, perches...everything else was the same, including the warranty. This new line is called the XTA setup. It features adjustable rebound, AND Clubsport caster/camber plates. Pretty solid setup for $1679US, there is nothing on the market that comes close to the quality, versatility, and bang for buck.

Coilovers and wheels on. Did a wheel bolt to stud conversion and picked up a set of OEM 1 piece BMW center caps.
Used Wheelmate studs, and Project Kics R40 Iconix Neo Chro.

Looks good.
How do those coils ride? What are the spring rates (linear springs + helpers?)?

JZS_147
04-18-2015, 10:21 AM
Not sure about the spring rates. I never really pay attention to that with KW products.

It was on OEM shocks with H&R springs before. This setup rides much better and the car is a lot more stable.

I thought those old hks mushroom style filters didn't filter sand/dust very well? Or was that a myth?

JZS_147
04-19-2015, 06:05 PM
Well HKS made 2 types of elements. 2 layer wet, and 3 layer dry. The ones from that test were the 2 layer wet filters.

"HKS replacement Filter Elements are available in a dry 3-layer, triple density or wet 2-layer, dual density construction. The dry 3-layer type is standard in SMF Reloaded Intake kits, and is designed for superior filtration while still providing excellent airflow. The wet 2-layer type is included in Racing Suction kits and is focused on maximizing airflow for performance, yet still keeping harmful particles from the engine. If your vehicle is in a high dust area, HKS recommends using dry 3-layer elements"

Ended up installing an AEM Infinity and a couple other supporting parts as well:

-AEM Infinity 10 w/ pnp harness
-Honeywell fuel pressure transducer
-AEM fuel temp sensor
-Radium Engineering Multi-Pump fuel pressure regulator
-Injector Dynamics ID1000

I was able to make 450whp @ 9psi on our Dyno Dynamics, very good results for this dyno at our elevation (3500ft.)

Sold the supercharger setup, just need to finish taking it all off.

Turbo setup is nearing completion. Decided to use one of the new BW SXE turbo's. I'm using the biggest in the S300 frame, which is a 69mm that has a max flow of 102lb/min. This means that this setup will be good for over 900whp at our elevation. On stock engine, I'll be running it at low boost, probably 8psi on pump, 12-14 psi on pump + meth. May do a race fuel tune as well and crank it up to about 18, but we'll see what sort of power I'm left at with pump + meth. The factory engine definitely has it's limitations, and I don't really want to grenade it off the bat.

The turbo setup fits....barely, but it'll work! :D

The intercooler was custom designed and is unique in a few ways. I added an "air guide" on the hot side endtank to equalize the flow through the core over the width, essentially eliminating unequal pressure zones.

I have no idea what it is you have against me, or what reasoning is for you to come into my personal build thead and try to stir up shit, but is a pretty asshole thing to do. I'm sure you know that, and you probably don't give a shit.

Clearly, that piston made contact with something as you can see how the the lands have shifted downwards, and the cracks. The something that the piston made contact with, was debris and metal shavings that were inside the intercooler that made it's way through the core while it was being tuned.

A combination of a used intercooler that was not inspected, coupled with the customer installing the core on the car, and then cutting the car for the piping afterwards, perhaps had something to do with it.

But as per usual, the tuner is always the blame, especially by people who don't know how to read engine damage or know nothing about tuning. Even after pulling all the piping, finding more debris, seeing the debris in the cylinders, etc and documenting it you'd figure there was enough evidence to make the correct assessment.

The engine failed at 1.05bar of boost, at 6 degrees away from MBT.

I've tuned a few of these cars way back in the day. After JP and John left HPF their ECU calibration really took a dive. So I managed to get the file (That HPF use to charge $1500 for!) to unlock the HPF AEM ECU and custom tune these and put them back to where they should have been. Connecting to that ECU and tuning it was a royal pain in the ass, so many comm issues. Mucho better now with the new ECU.

Thanks!

I have 0 of the common mechanical issues. But here is what I'm doing over the next couple weeks while car is apart:
-besian vanol seals
-besian oil pump disc
-besian vanos coilpack upgrade
-redish motorsports floor reinforcement plates
-akg subframe bushings

The only "e46 issues" I have are aesthetics, the window trims drooping and the cracked center vent.

Progress!

Moved the fuel pressure regulator and switched up to a return setup instead of returnless like I had before. Added another fuel damper, so now there's one in the rail and one in the high pressure line, also fuel temp and fuel pressure into the reg body. Was thinking about going E85 and then I could use the fuel temp channel in the Flex sensor, but decided against it as I'd have to change injectors again and add a ton more pump. Maybe later down the road I'll do a twin or triple pump set and ID2000's.

Got the piping all done, full exhaust all done as well. Put everything together and confirmed fitment, pulled it all back off and send intake mani and piping for powdercoating. Should be ready to start up and run after I get that stuff back

You can pull the whistle out of those things to make them sound much better.

Yes I know the fin can be removed or changed to others.

They only squeak on small turbos / low volume. On every one of my cars that has them they sound good.

Made some more progress last weekend. Installed my Aquamist HFS3 in a Howerton 2gal twin tank encosure. Added my own LED's to check level, with a board that controls brightness, and dual high flow fans that turn on with the pump relay (intake and exhaust). Just need to trim the panels and put it all back together now. Hoping I have the piping and manifold back from powdercoating next week, and perhaps I'll have it running by next weekend.

Sentry and I worked our asses off all weekend and got it very close to completion.

Meth and all other aux I/O is wired up to the Infinity and tested. Everything works.

Needed an alternator bolt (which i ordered today), when that comes in we can reassemble the front end and put the fan back in...then dyno time ;D

Thanks guys! Appreciate the kind words. I'm super happy with how it turned out. Can't wait until summer rolls around, will be nice to run it down the strip a couple times.

Excuse the garbage pictures, my phone has a cracked camera lens and I'm too poor to buy another phone, you'll understand why if you've been following this build. Lol

Another update.

After Driven I did a couple of pulls and on my way home I noticed a squeaking sound from the rear end. Turns out I cracked the rear subframe mounting location on the chassis. So, I had to drop the subframe and weld in re-enforcement plates. While we were in there I changed a bunch of bushings and added some other upgrades:
-Redish Motorsport Re-enforcement plates
-AKG subframe bushings
-Revshift trans mount bushing
-Whiteline FCA bushings
-Longer rear wheel studs (65mm)
-12mm hubcentric spacers
-SPL Titanium Rear Control Arms

Installed a custom spec OS Giken LSD with an adjusted torque ramp rate to try and save the stock axles. So far so good! The car drives totally different, has a ton more rear grip and I haven't killed anymore axles. Next up, some DSS axles and upgrade to an OS Giken R3C clutch. I have the STR2CD right now but we're getting pretty close to it's recommended capacity.

Planning on dropping engine on the 8th, disassemble and start building. Goal is 850-900whp, pretty much aim to max out what the turbo can do.
