Roommate just got a Roku device and isn't getting the best connections in my basement for streaming. What's my best bet for boosting the wi-fi connection without buying an expensive unit?

A 50 or 100 foot ethernet cable strung down the heating vents to the device.

Is your roomate getting a good signal on their computer?

The ethernet cable is the way to go, otherwise, this might help:

Then call TELUS up and get them to come and install one of their wifi extenders - you should be able to get it for free if you're on either the TELUS 50 or 100 plan. Certainly works well in our home.

If they don't want to give you one for free, I recommend a DIR-505. On sale for $30 at memex right now.

It only has n and g signals, but at the same time it work as either a wireless extender, or a stand alone wifi router which is awesome to bring on vacation/business trips because you can hook it up to a hotels wired internet and it turns into your own wifi signal so you don't have to share the hotels terrible wifi.

One thing about TELUS' wifi extender is that it can use either the hard wired ethernet or coax in your home to connect back to your main modem - maybe convenient for some folks if they don't have ethernet hard wired in their home but do have coax cables in the walls.

Their wifi extender needs to be wired in? That's weird. Most just need a power outlet.

They converted one of my phone jacks to a rj45 connection and then hardwired the wifi booster.

@OP The easiest if you just care about the Roku would be this:

Plug one end in near your router and just run ethernet from your router to it. Plug the other one in near the roku and run ethernet to the roku and never have to worry about wifi again

Good ideas guys. Will try giving Telus a shout and hope to get the free one. I'm sure I'll get it out of them I've been a customer for years.
