Experiencing significant "Rod Knock" coming from my engine these last couple days.
Had to drive out of town over the weekend and it got 10x worse.
Checked oil levels and they are extremely low, I just had the oil changed under a month ago.
I have been looking up "Rod Knock" and the consensus is the engine is more than likely toast.
I haven't brought it to a mechanic yet, but don't even know if it is worth it at this point.
It's a 2003, and I really don't feel like putting a ton of money into it.
Anyone had experience with an issue like this?

If its knocking, chances are your bearings are wiped. The knock is caused by excessive oil clearances between the bearing and the crankshaft. Its a fairly easy bottom end to find, and can be easily transplanted. Most likely what you will see is damage to the journals, and possibly heat damage to the crank and big ends of the rod.

That being said, you can use the bottom end from an NA supra, etc... and it should be at least stronger (they really weakened the bottom end in the 2jz-ge VVTI models, in the name of lower rotating mass. They dont take much additional horsepower.

You could always..2jz it...or sell it to somebody who will... (=

Its funny, i just pulled apart a 2jz-ge from a supra na (it has a turbo kit on it ) and it was running great, no noises. Well, once i got into it, bearings were wiped and crank was no good. Lol, just goes to show, i tell everybody, engines are a pandoras box!

What condition is the car in otherwise?

It's in pretty good condition.
Only 215,000 KMS.
So sad, I had just put in a large amount of regular scheduled maintenance a few months ago, only to have this happen.

Wow, first I've heard of an IS300 blowing a motor - must have been abused a lot. I would get confirmation from someone who knows - prior to writing off the vehicle though.

Is this a yellow, 5spd model (from US) by chance ?

Sounds like this?

Even so, dropping the pan might not be a bad idea.

That's exactly it, and it's only been getting worse.
It progressed from the drive back from out of town.
Obviously I have it parked now.

Cos,
I don't have the desire to go through the hassle of that.
It's an older car, I want the updated technology in my next one!
I still have a tape player in that thing.

Doesn't surprise me. I had to change the motor on my 07 RX 350 at 160,000 kms :banghead: I thought they were reliable.

No. Sorry i don't mean to high jack OP's thread here.

I turned my car off and when i tried restarting it, it wouldn't start. According to Stampede Toyota and my mechanic, when i tried starting the car, one of the timing chain tooth broke and fucked up my engine. I don't understand that till today. It's very rare and chances of that happening is 1 out of 1000 cars.

I've been talking to my guy already from Royal Oak.
See if we can figure something out.

That's how the issue started with me.
Car wouldn't start sometimes, and before I had a chance to take it in, the Rod Knock had started slowly, and the fact I was out of town putting some miles on it made it worse to the point the engine was toast.

Live and learn! Should have just parked it, but with a baby at home I just wanted to get home.

That being said, anyone want to buy it???

Lol I should just buy it and get this done myself.
I did purchase the IS350 and it is amazing.
