Hey guys, so I've read a few tutorials on this process and every single one is using a flash. I don't know if this is a requirement or if it's because most people don't have a light table. This is the one I have:

I'm thinking I can just set this up on a table and point the camera directly down, have two small rubber clips on either end of the light screen to hold things in place and use my Zeiss 100mm MP to snap a shot that will properly fill the frame on my D810.

I'm probably overthinking this but I just don't see the need for some of these large shoebox things and the flash when I have this light table to use but maybe I'm not appreciating some other steps involved.

reason why I grabbed that giant light table off you was in case I started scanning MF and 4x5

i've 'scanned' with the Sony A7 and FD 50mm macro lens with extension tube using an Ipad and even Iphone as light source, results were phenomenal however very time consuming, for speed I rather use a dedicated scanner especially since for film i've decided to shoot B&W.

slides are easy, C-41 color you just invert the colors but then lots of color corrections to be done.

create cardboard masks for the film size you plan on scanning so that only the the frame gets illuminated

here's a Gold 200 frame that I scanned with the A7, getting the colors right is such a PITA

So Earl, you were able to just point down on the table and capture things that way? I like the cardboard cutout idea for each film format, perhaps I can glue on some soft material on the film-side to avoid scratching it...

Also I seem to have lost two rolls somewhere when I borrowed your 690 lol. Such a shame, Bow Lake was nice that day

the first initial A7 scans I did were taken with table and camera pointing down, used a spirit level to make sure it was pretty levelled as well.
used one of my 6x6 and 135 enlarger holder to light only the frame.

check ebay for slide duplicators, basically you slide the frame on the duplicator attached to your macro lens and then point to an evenly lit light source. works only for 135mm, for MF and 4x5 I'll have to use table and tripod
