I've always wanted a Ducati 998 and this appears to be the only one for sale in Canada (67,000km is crazy) but the real problem is the guy appears to be full of shit. I've found several bike ads that are just copy pasted about him being the second owner. It's either a full scam or the guy is just reselling bikes and claiming long term ownership.

Another ad by the seller:

I guess I'll be looking at a 1098 as they seem fairly easy to find, kind of bummed as I wanted a 998.

Go see it I guess? If you get a bad vibe, walk away.

Ya, I think I'm just going to write it off based on his current lies.

I know but there is only one other 998 for sale in Canada right now and it's yellow and in Montreal.

67k on the odometer, described as "mint" That's the first alarm bell.

If you "must" have a Red 998, then that is your option right now. Wait a few more months and youll undoubtedly see more Ducs coming out of storage and for sale.

Mint could mean immaculately maintained.
67,000k for a Duc means its had 5-6 (?) desmo adjustments.... I would hope anyway.
Check all service records for this.

Seller has been on Kijiji since 2009 so its not like its a throw account. I'd go and take a look if I was you.

Yeah, what's the rush that you need to have one right now? You got terminal cancer or something? RIP OP.

Maybe the word "mint" in terms of condition is subjective but for me it implies at the very least limited usage. Proper maintenece is all well and good, however at 67k there's plenty of wear and tear on items even the most comprehensive maintenance schedule would not include. Does that mean the bike's not in great shape? No of course not, but I think "mint" is a stretch with that many km's.

I've had good luck with high mileage bikes. For some reason in AB, it scares people off, even though down in Cali and really any year round riding season, they can hit 100k miles no problem.

I'm still trying to determine what the scam is? Does the bike not exist? Is he a "Somalian Prince" and he has promised to ship you the bike after payment?

I'm not a bike guy so maybe I'm missing something.

The ad phone number also comes up as a rentfaster.ca listing - so I dont think its automatically a scam.

"Mint" to me means cosmetically, not mechanically, so I wouldn't have any issues with something being high mileage and mint. But maybe I'm doing it wrong. I don't own anything that's mint by any definition. I have a tin of mints, and even they're rough.

I know collectors that own very high end bikes and they ride them alot, spare no expense on them and honestly besides the odometer you would not be able to tell they had more then 5000km on them.

He says it was always serviced by motorad so give them a call about the bike as well, they are good guys to deal with.

I know a girl in Calgary with 100k on the original motor on a CBR600RR...it is possible, just most get smashed before they get that far.

Does she still have that bike? Been awhile since I've seen anyone from CGP.

One of the guys we ride with has an F4i that has spun over 203k kms last I asked. Original motor. If they have been taken care of, then 50-60k is nothing. People have a perception that a bike is miled out with 30k+ kms on it

I would say a lot of that probably stems from the 80s and 90s when 4 carbs on a bike equaled insane repair costs after 30k of ownership.

That F4i is the first in that series to use fuel injection.

Also, 4cyl air cooled bikes sometimes wore pistons/parts out unevenly which caused weird engine behaviour.
