As more of them show up they're always around the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary. There's also usually a belted kingfisher around during the summer (hasn't been spotted yet this year), great blue herons, eagles and osprey along the river, and all sorts of other little critters.

Rented a 100mm F2.8L macro. Took me awhile to get into it, starting to warm up to it though.
I'm still not a fan of how much searching the autofocus does.

Macro basically = manual focusing.

Yeah, you don't AF when shooting macro. The depth of field is too narrow and the camera is going to be hunting constantly.

It has nothing to do with the lens.

I didn't find it too bad on small objects. It wanted to search more in the 0.5+ range. I did get use to how it behaved. Can still be slow if switching distances though. Not a major complaint but the IS makes a decent amount of sound.

Edit: okay yeah it's way easier to manual focus haha

I often AF with macro and it works just fine for me. The combo does not hunt, and it only changes AF if I move or the subject moves, which is what I want. If you need to focus on something with no contrast or pick out extremely tiny details within the subject, MF is the way to go, but if there is a decent AF target I've never had an issue.

First impressions are that the AF is off the charts ridiculous. It basically doesn't miss even at 10 FPS in low light. I have some fine tuning to do with the settings, but it's a pretty awesome little camera so far...and doing photo dumps from an XQD card is super fast.

Go first thing in the morning...I went in to the Aviary and the owls were kicking around. And all three of the bears were roaming around...I got like 50 shots of the Kermode getting ready for his day, then a couple of him climbing down the tree (crap backgrounds) and a few of him wrestling with the black one (also crap backgrounds)

Are the owls new? I don't remember the Calgary zoo having much of an aviary except where the eagle is, and a snow owl over by the Red Panda. The longest reach these days I have is 200mm haha, so I should probably get a 200-500 before I bother going to the zoo again. The D500 would be such a great zoo cam.

The owls have been around for quite a while. The aviary is in the Canadian wilds right near the beginning. Right by the washrooms just after the rocky Mountain sheep. There's 5 great greys (all apparently fly although I only saw 2 fly), three barred (all fly, ones on a nest right now...they're really good at hiding though), two snowys (neither of which can fly), and two rough legged hawks (neither of which fly)

Lol Mark you need to get into the wilderness and shoot animals not in cages! Pretty much any camera would suffice at the zoo for animals outside :)

However, can I justify spending $3,500 for a new gripped D500....I think I'm dreaming at this point :(

I can't afford the lenses that get me good shots of birds in the wilderness :rofl: I could probably swing a 200-500 though, maybe next time there is rebates. If I can't even find these owls in cages I can't imagine I would see too much in the wild haha.

Honestly if you know where and when to look the great greys and the snowys ate all pretty easy to find out in the wild. The barred are damn near invisible. I have great grey and snowy shots in the wild all the way down to 70-200 range, and have seen some decent shots with 70-300s...

The great greys are around pretty much year round. The snowys come around October and are usually around until late March - April but they went north early this year.

I'm always happy to take people out with me for the owls.

If you want shots of them flying right at you it's easier sure, but the great greys are a lot more comfortable with people. They'll dive in for voles right near you...and my most profitable shot ever is a great grey that just happened to fly right passed me of its own free will (mostly because a group of Asian photographers got to close to it from the far side from me).
