There is no "shitty watches" thread so I hope it's OK that I ask my question here haha. My beater hiking/swimming/diving etc. watch finally died (really old Timex Ironman) and I need to replace it. Obviously this is not a big purchase decision, but is there anything objectively better between something like an Ironman or Casio G-shock (or similar)? Any others I should look at? I was looking at this one:

https://www.amazon.ca/Casio-G100-1BV-G-Shock-Classic-Ana-Digi/dp/B000AR7S3A/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1463674005&sr=8-3&keywords=g+shock

Or this:

https://www.amazon.ca/Casio-DW5600E-1V-Mens-G-Shock-Watch/dp/B000GAYQKY/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1463674689&sr=8-12&keywords=g+shock

Or are all these watches coming out of the same factory and basically disposable so maybe it doesn't even matter? I'm open to anything ~$100 TIA

Hey mitsu, I have one of these:
https://www.amazon.ca/Casio-G-Shock-Black-Watch-GA150-1A/dp/B0091J575Y/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1463675913&sr=8-6&keywords=GA-150

that has just been sitting in a drawer for about a year...I would sell it for pretty cheap if you were interested.

There's a handful of Citizen eco-drive watches on clearance at thebay.com for $149.99 (from $450) that would be decent beaters.

As someone with 12 G Shocks...I think...I have to vote for one of those.

GREAT beaters...and depending on your personal tastes for colours and designs you can find some really funky ones haha....

100% what I would recommend.

Casio Edifice is also a good option for under $100 from Costco.ca

These two look pretty good but the Citizen might be a little too nice for what I'm going to use it for haha - not sure I want a rigid stainless steel bracelet either as it doesn't seem like it would be comfortable for activities. They look like great value though:

http://www.thebay.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/en/thebay/stainless-steel-eco-drive-tachymeter-chronograph-watch-0022-at2130-59f--24

http://www.costco.ca/Casio-Edifice-1-Chronograph-Men%E2%80%99s-Watch--.product.100107188.html

The Costco one is 2.0 inches wide though haha, that is wider than my wrist I think but I like it otherwise.

It's going to be in salt water too if that matters.

Sport, I guess. I just wear it on vacation, hiking, diving, swimming, etc. I don't normally wear a watch day-to-day but the more I look in the wrist shot thread maybe I need two watches

I have mostly been looking at the simpler, less gawdy G-shocks that aren't enormous or overly complicated. I am literally replacing one of these haha, which was probably $20 when I got it 15 years ago or whatever, so anything is an upgrade.

http://thumbs.ebaystatic.com/images/g/BCEAAOSw~oFXHgtS/s-l225.jpg

Mine looks like the water sealing failed, it has condensation inside and it stopped working while I was swimming last week in Mexico.

The Drive line from Citizen is great and pretty affordable. Solar cell, never needs a battery, built well. I have two, recommended.

I vote for a g-shock as well. I use one for my daily at work. I'm a welder so take that for what you will. Its all spattered up and has never skipped a beat. I've used it 3 years now.

I looked a the Drive models and beater watch or not, I really like this one, but I feel like it's a watch that would probably be 50% off sometimes, no?

I will probably end up with a nice watch, and then a cheap G-shock. I can see how all you guys are addicted

I have that one, it's great-looking but not really an outdoorsy-style watch like a G-shock. Look into the Casio ProTrek line as well, they tend to be a bit more money than the G-shocks but you can definitely score deals on them.

Thanks. Looked at the ProTrek but I think they are too busy for me. I will take a look at the Costco ones next time I'm in there regardless. The 51.2mm might be too big for my tastes, we will see.

The Bay has about half their Citizens on sale - maybe a good time to get an entry level casual/dress watch.

Are these any good?

I also like the Hamilton Khaki but I think too expensive for me.

I came here looking to replace my $20 timex beater and have spent the last 2 days looking at watches of every price range

Also I liked this one but is it a piece of junk?

I was gonna say MVMT but you said you wanted a watch for hiking and such but not a bulbous G-shock.

MVMT is decent for sub $100 imo.

If you want durable cheap too, the legit Russian Vostok Amphibias and Komandirskies can take a beating.

Went to The Bay downtown today to look at some Citizens (all are 25% off for the long weekend), and they had almost no stock compared to online. I don't think I would ever buy a watch sight unseen so that rules out most of those I think. I really like the concept of never needing a battery.

I think my new plan is to buy myself a nice leather strap daily driver for $200-500 and see how I like it. Then I will just buy some dirt cheap beater on amazon or something for my hiking/swimming watch. Thanks for everyone's help though I do appreciate it - sorry for the subject change haha.

If you're not opposed to getting used, you can find Suunto Cores on Kijiji around your price range and needs

But off Amazon. If you don't like it, send it back. No harm no foul. I've bought dozens off of Amazon lol

In that case, if you're going to get new consider getting it at MEC. Their return policy is ridiculous. If it craps out on you, even years after you've bought it, they'll take it back. They'll probably even price match Amazon too.

How did you go from a $100 beater to almost $900 in a pair of watches? But yeah, if you open your wallet up a bit for your "activity" watch, there's a lot of great ABC (altimeter/barometer/compass) options at $300-400.

I never even thought about MEC - isn't that awesome warranty only on their house brand though? Or is it absolutely everything you buy from their store?

They even carry the cheapo's like this which might even be all I need:

http://www.mec.ca/product/5007-038/casio-water-resist-watch-unisex/?Ntk=productsearch_en_q32008&Ns=p_min_sale_price&h=10&f=10+50023&q=watches

or

One of those and a Hamilton from Justin and I'll be all set

I'm pretty sure it's anything they sold you, though it's dependent on what it is you bought and the reason for returning it. You'd have to ask them.

Big thanks to Justin @ Gem By Carati for his patience and a great deal.

Thanks for everyone's input, it's still valuable because I am still going to buy a beater watch, but probably not until my next vacation when it will actually see some use.

Love the Khaki Field. I reviewed it a while ago and really enjoyed it (http://watchesyoucanafford.com/hamilton-khaki-field-automatic-review/). It's a dick to get goods pics of though lol.

Be careful with Justin btw. One minute you're there grabbing a Khaki, the next you're looking at a pair of Longines :D

I actually read your review during my research  Seems like hard to beat bang for the buck, which is all I need for an "entry level" nice watch for a daily. It's not at all hard to see how people get addicted haha. And yeah, I tried more than a few angles to get rid of reflections for my pic

Strap's a little stiff so I'm hoping it breaks in a bit (never owned a leather strap watch before), but I like it a lot in the few hours I've had it!

I have a question about my watch - is it bad for it to wind it manually? I read that automatics have less robust manual winding mechanisms and I can wear it out by winding it manually. I don't wear it as much on the weekends so it sometimes dies after a couple days - is it OK to give it a few winds each night, which seems to be enough to prevent it from ever dying? Or will I be wearing out the mechanism prematurely?

It's fine. :)

Or just hold it with your palm and spin the watch as if you're sloshing wine like a dbag, so the rotor does the work for you!

Hmm, I did try that - I moved it in my hands (like you describe haha) such that the weight in the back spun around completely at least 20 times slowly, but that didn't seem to wind it up nearly as much as the same number of turns on the crown. Is the ratio different between the automatic mechanism and the crown?

The crown definitely has more recoil than the rotor so it'll power up the watch quicker. Same result if you spin your hand faster though haha.

Holy
I think I should use that the next time someone asks me how an automatic works.

Manual winding is totally fine. If it stops completely give the crown 10-15 turns before putting it on your wrist.

Glad to hear you're enjoying the watch, Mitsu!

Manual wind has resistance like a wind-up toy and you'll feel it lock when it's fully wound. You're in good hands.

Mitsu3000gt
06-21-2016, 02:08 PM
Thanks guys.

I thought the crown never stops turning because there is a clutch mechanism to prevent over-winding, either by manual wind or automatic wind. Is that not the case? I've read you can feel when it's fully wound, but the crown doesn't lock - maybe I misunderstood.

In either case I don't think I have ever fully wound it manually, usually 5-10 turns is more than enough to find it running still the next morning.

I just recently stopped rocking the fitbit, which is why I now want to start looking at some watches. Also stopped rocking the (original) pebble a few years back.

Yessireeebob! Holding up good. Couple of scratches in the crystal, and the case has some wear marks, but that ugly ass fabric strap is no uglier, and it's kind of grown on me. Because of the strap, I treat that one as my "weekend" kind of watch, when I'm more likely to be changing my oil than dressing up.

What I like about the 5 is that it's a strap change away from any occasion. lol

FYI Watchismo.com has lots of watches on sale right now for half off

couldn't help myself and ordered this for $261CDN after taxes (regularly $400US). Ordered iit this am, shipped after lunch!

I will have 2 or 3 watches for sale this weekend, I don't think I need a dozen watches :nut:

Unfortunately my watch broke over the Christmas holiday (Hamilton Khaki Automatic). It doesn't hold a wind for more than 2-3 hours absolute maximum (if wound completely) , and dies regularly while on my wrist, even if I give it the odd manual wind in between 'deaths'. Basically it's behaving as though the spring that holds the wind energy is no longer holding proper tension or something. It's with Justin now, but I was told 1-2 months for turnaround time which is not great. Anyone have this happen to them before with an automatic watch? Probably the last Hamilton I buy - I expected it to work longer than 6 months.

My automatics have been running for years. I have several automatics older than me and still work.

Sorry to hear.

They are so cheap that you might be better off buying a new one instead of paying for a service :nut:

Haven't dropped or banged it with any significant force to my knowledge. I have been babying the thing. I suppose it's possible that something like that happened without me knowing but the chances are pretty slim.

would you be willing to sell it in this condition?

I had to sell mine awhile back due to financial issues, and I would like to get another...I figure if I buy it broken, and then pay to fix it at a later date, I can afford to buy another Hamilton...

I'm not interested in selling it unfortunately, it's under warranty for 2 years so I might as well keep it at least until that's up.

Get it serviced and keep it.

I have like... 5 or 6 Hamiltons at this point. I've had to get one serviced once, but otherwise they are all good.

Did you change the date at any point while the watch was between 10pm-2am?

I was told not to do what when I bought it and have been careful about it, so I don't think so. What happens if I do that? I don't think anything on the watch would stop you from doing so.

Would that affect the winding mechanism though?

How does the watch know if it's AM or PM? I didn't think there was a visible difference, at least to me.

I did that to my Breitling once and it messed up the date feature on it. The gears would keep skipping when I tried to adjust the date or sometimes it would move freely. It didn't affect the actual watch from working in any way though. And don't think it matters if it's AM or PM. They say, not to do it when the needles are between the 10 and 2 markers.

Got my Seiko 5 back and it's working no problem now.
Kong is also going to help me replace the fading bezel on my steinhart, once replaced I'm debating selling it and stick with the Seiko, it's lighter and if it breaks I can get one for cheap.

Thinking of the Seiko 5 Men's SNK809 as a black dial watch.

1 month later I am still waiting on Hamilton to fix my watch :( Might be another month.

I finally got my watch back on March 7th, and Hamilton either put the wrong second hand back in my watch or they installed it upside down. Super unimpressed with their service (not Justin's fault). So far I am just living with it because I don't want it to go away for another 2 months.

Now I am noticing my watch is gaining time - but I am not sure what is acceptable.

What is acceptable time variation for my watch do you guys think? I synced it to the official/atomic clock and it gains 45 seconds in about 5-7 days.

The COSC certified chronometer standard is -4 to +6 seconds per 24 hours, so if you're 45 seconds per 5-7 days you're not doing too bad.

Mitsu, are you resetting it after you notice the time gain after the 5-7 day period?

I haven't done anything yet - I reset it once about a week ago precisely to atomic time, and since then I've been paying attention and I have noticed it has been fast. It's now a full minute fast after what is probably a bit more than a week. Some googling suggested +/- 2 seconds a day was normal which made me think something might be up with mine which is about 4 times that. Obviously this is not a big deal, but if it's not performing within spec I would like to know. Given that it's been serviced by Hamilton at least twice now I would have expected the time keeping to be one thing they inspected before returning it, but I have no idea.

Justing

+/- 2 a day is not correct unfortunately.
As mentioned by Strider, even a COSC calibre allows for a 4-6 second variation per day.

If you're at about +9 seconds per day, you're definitely within spec.
I'd keep wearing it and see if it starts to lose a few seconds a day.

Mitsu3000gt

Sounds good, thanks guys. I'll keep an eye on it going forward but it sounds like I'm close to spec.
