Do any German CUV's or SUV's have an option for a 5/6spd?

OP... wanna know what car blew me away, if you wanna get a manual german car...

the golf R... WOW! what an amazing car for that price! I highly recommend you go test drive it. Even the GTI, extremely fun! I almost bought one off our VW beyonder sales guy. and I will in the future if I ever decide to get one.

The woman wants a german CUV that's manual.

I'm about to break her heart.

Really she was hoping to get a mercedes/bmw cuv/small suv type of car in manual. We spent a bunch of time in europe recently and she fell in love with glk's.

She currently drives a 335 xi. Manual.

I might have to work her into a DSG car. I really want a DSG car.

Thanks ya'll.

I think manuals in that segment as ultra rare as most people that buy these things don't want to row gears...

As the list posted by rage true manuals are a dying and are not offer very often any more cause the take rates on them are sooooo small

I pitched the tiguan based on your research jws.

She said she'd rather a Q5. I argued that they are essentially the same car. Thanks for the tip though. She might have to settle with that if manual is truly the only option.

Excellent point.

Especially for the north american market.

With that said, I'd estimate that it was nearly a 60/40 split for manual/other transmission choices from what we saw in Italy. That is what makes this shopping experience such a hard pill for us both to contend with.

A Tiguan is basically a Golf that's been lifted slightly. It doesn't offer any appreciable increase is room inside for passengers/cargo.

A Tiguan in manual is also just FWD. I think that's the same layout with an X3 with a stick.

Cayenne?

Depends on the car. Economy cars, sure, but for SUV's and luxury cars, the take rate is still mostly automatics.

Even the Panamera had a manual option in Europe, and nobody bought 'em. They sold something like 20 lol.

The pre-2011 X3's had AWD and a stick but were pretty rare. I believe they only came in the 28i model.

We saw lots of diesel GLK's, Q3's and a couple Volvo's (not german, I know) with a sticks.

Shes going to go test drive a GLA for the DSG transmission this evening. But she is really still wishing for a manual vehicle.

Might end up pushing her towards a wagon?

Because used cars in Japan are worthless and sold dirt cheap, while similar cars from Europe are a lot more expensive relatively speaking.

GLA45 ftw. Make sure you find a 2016, the transmission shifts way better.

She wants a manual man. I already tried my best to convince her otherwise.

She wants what she wants. Will not drive a domestic or a Japanese car. Drives me absolutely nuts.

She "doesnt mind" the GLA. Now that we are in that segment she is willing to try a golf R and a Macan. She liked my A3 but said it was to small. She isnt going to like the golf.

The price differential is massive between the Macan and the GLA. she doesn't care.

Most frustrating car buying experience.

There's a huge price gap between GTI/Golf R, GLA45, and Macan. You buy the Golf for best bang for the buck $ to performance, GLA45 for the performance, and Macan for the bling factor and best interior. Macan turbo if you want performance as well and money is no object.

just watched a new show on netflix called head 2 head and they had a comparison on the macan turbo and the GLA45 and the price difference at 20k US is purely for the fact that you have a porsche.

I don't know how credible the host is of the show, but he says hands down the GLA45 is the better vehicle 9/10 times. it actually makes me wish I sprung for it instead of the X1...Oh well, Rage, let me know when youre ready to trade yours in lol

So we drove a Macan S. Back to back with another test drive in the GLA45. We both prefer the GLA45. The porsche, while very nicely appointed, just didnt have the same feeling of excitement in the same-ish trim and relative power level.

German cars carry a build style, not just the cache. That's what she likes about them. At the end of the day, she likes what she likes.

You're bang on about the porsche comment. While her work is relatively stable, it would be outside of her price range to go for the turbo.

I have 1 euro, have only owned 1 other euro. The rest of my cars are Japanese, older and modified. With that said I would love a W8.

RIGHT!?!? That's the car that spurred all this on. If Brexit manages to fall through we are on our way out the door. I love Canada. But I love me some diesel options, too.

How's the Mini treating you?

Think this is what you're referring to. It's a MT weekly segment.

It's not really a fair fight when it comes to handling dynamics. The GLA isn't really an SUV. It's a car with a jacked up suspension to make it into a faux SUV. The AMG version lowers it back down to the A45/CLA45 level rideheight that the car is based on which is why it drives like a car.

To be fair, neither her or I drove it in a rage2 approved manner. I mean the power delivery and relative balance just seemed different in a not quite as desirable way. Not horrible, just not as 'tight' or 'thrilling' as I would have expected. I mean the Cayenne GTS feels 'tight' for its size. Whereas the Macan was slightly disappointing. Just felt so refined in a I don't want to spill my latte sort of way. Not for me. Not for that kind of money.

Last cars we are going to look at, sheerly to cover it off, are the Q3 and a GLC. I know she'll hate them because they both dont have dsg type transmissions & no power compared to the GLA/Macan. I guess if they have one at royal oak we will look at an SQ5. I meant we did start off looking for a SUV... then allowed the car-u-v in.

We havent bothered with the X1. Making a mistake, are we?

If you're looking at new only, the new X1 is terrible compared to the old one. Start here on the X1 discussions and why 03ozwhip went with a last gen X1.

8P A3? They're par with a MK4 GTi.

Suggest a VW 3 generations newer & have her try the new R. Night & day compared to the 15 yr old Audi.

EDIT/CAVEAT. Only suggesting the VW, if manual is a hill she's gonna die on. Much better other vehicles listed otherwise.

What sort of deal did you end up getting?

R154
07-25-2016, 01:45 PM
Middle of the road deal. Some people have paid more (maybe 1.5K) some people paid less (unknown how much less likey around 1ish K). But it was the first time we have bought from Lonestar. Going in we didnt think we'd get an incredible deal.

We didnt use their financing program.

3M was included. That was about it.
