The problem is a lot of advertisers (I've worked for a couple agencies) always want to go the 'so bad, it's funny' route. The problem is that it's really hard to do, and when you do it wrong, shit like this happens.

It's clear that they knew that the "twin prices" angle was going to be corny, and it just escalated from there.
