Introducing my new project!
Track dedicated 2004 Mustang GT

I've been wanting a track dedicated car to beat on for awhile now. I was looking for an import, but came across this car and couldn't pass it up. Probably a really good car for me to track since I have knowledge of this chassis and parts are abundant/cheap.

The car runs and drives good, but the paint is ugly. After driving it for a bit I'm very happy with my purchase! Stutters a bit once in awhile, probably the bit of very very old gas in the tank. The 4.6 2v V8 is slow, but seems healthy and it's enough power to make it fun to beat on. The odometer displays only 92k KM, the interior looks like its in good shape. The entire car is in much better shape than what my 94 started as!

Modifications:
Throttle Body + Spacer
Cold Air
Shifter
X Pipe
Flow Master Cat Back
Upper And Lower Rear Control Arms
Subframe Connectors (Bolted in, will weld or remove)
Headlights
Taillights
Billet interior accessories
Gauge overlay
Eagle alloy 17" wheels (Dirty, but in great condition)
Chin spoiler
Mesh things

The car also came with (uninstalled) larger injectors, larger maf, parts transmission, stock headlights and stock taillights.

I plan on swapping the stock headlights and taillights back in. The aftermarket ones are probably the better ones I've seen, but I prefer the stock. The mesh screens on the car are getting removed. The gauge overlay is getting removed since its in MPH and its doesn't light up at night haha. I'll also be removing the aluminum interior overlays.

This is awesome. Do you know if you have to do as much work for chassis rigidity as the older Mustangs? Are you planning on stripping the interior?

NoPulp

The sn95 chassis was improved quite a bit over the fox. The need for stiffening isn't as great, but there is benefit and lots of good products out there. Torque boxes are a good idea to reinforce, especially if you plan on launching with sticky tires. Subframe connectors are also popular.

Not sure about the interior, end goal is to cage but I'm a long way from there. I was thinking of swapping this interior into the 94 though, so I'll probably gut it when I'm ready to do that.

If your main focus is autocross, what class are you aiming for?

georgemagana
10-01-2016, 01:59 PM
Make sure it isn't louder than 93dB. Your exhaust might not let you do any autox.

xnvy

^This is also true.

With this car I'm not entirely sure on classing. You might end up in some silly class woefully underprepared because of the few mods you have but if you're not looking to be competitive, autox is a great way to learn car control.

I had another question for you which was, what colour is this car going to be?

*cough* Envy Green *cough* ;)

I'd just set this thing up to take it on the track days at castrol raceway

NoPulp

I don't think the exhaust is very loud. The 94 and my truck are louder, but at the same time I have no idea what 93db sounds like. I guess I try an event, if I get booted then I'll deal with it :)

As for autocross classes...
End goal- I'm not too sure. I'll have to start doing research and class reading to see where it could possibly be competitive.
Right now - Whatever they class me as. The car and definitely the driver aren't at a point to be competitive. I'll be racing against myself for awhile.

I'd love to go to castrol, track days would be very fun. It is a bit long from lethbridge especially without a trailer. I'd like to go occasionally though.

This morning I went through the basics of the car. The rear tires were on backwards, so after I corrected that everything else was good. I took the car for a bit of a trip to watch some drifting and the car drove great! I took a couple quick pictures while I was out.

Once I got home I decided to start working on it.

Taillight swapped to stock
License plate lights hooked up with new LEDs
Fixed the trunk pop button
Headlights swapped to stock, removing all the goof angle light wiring was a bit of a pain
Grill removed, will need to order a mach1 grill delete + pony
Gauge overlays removed, there was a white cobra face under it. Still in miles, but Im pretty sure odometer is KM
Removed windshield decal

Couple pictures how the car currently looks

Ideally it would be orange as well...
Doing a good colour swap is a pain, especially with black. Maybe it'll get paint down the road, for now its staying black. I thought I'd hate owning a black car, but it's growing on me! Maybe its because the paint is so bad that it doesn't bother me if it's dirty.

I like the names 01RedDX

I'll keep that in mind, thanks!
I was calling it project No Name since it has weird ID and no history, but I need to come up with a better name ;)

Apparently I decided to jump into interior work.
Sorry about the cell pictures, didn't feel like getting my good camera dirty. I'll bring out an old DSLR to the shop next time for better progress pictures.

Started by removing the cheesy interior overlay... what a pain in the ass! It all eventually came off though.

I then decided to remove the seat covers. They were actually pretty decent covers, but I didn't want to slide around on leather. I tried to remove them nicely to try and sell them, but they ripped so I just ripped the other one off too. The cloth seats are actually in decent shape, should be nice after a good clean.

I then noticed some aftermarket interior lighting... and well one thing led to another and I tore things apart chasing after it. Some really um... interesting... wiring. Next task will be to remove the aftermarket lighting/wiring and remove the unnecessary stereo wiring. It doesn't look like it will be too bad to remove. I also swapped out the blue LED dome light for a white one, the blue light was really bugging me. I also have new LEDs coming to swap the horrible blue ones in the gauge cluster too.

I'm tempted to just gut the interior now, but I think I'll keep a full interior for awhile.

With regards to your VIN, it sounds like an Alberta Assigned VIN. My Uncles car has one. Happens when a car is cloned.

Im guessing its on your B pillar and is blue. If its Alberta it should have "Alberta" on it as well.

Yes its an alberta assigned, its red and its in the door jam. It's suppose to be a 17 digit number, but its only 8. Registry was confused, but it came up in the system.

Who says that procrastination never pays off?

I got this car to replace the interior in my 94. I've been meaning to bring it to the crusher for many years now, but never got around to it. Well I've procrastinated long enough where I can use more parts from it!

Most of the parts will be spares for the track car, but a few parts can be used in the 94 and maybe dad's 56 project.

Our first task was to get the ol David Brown started to move the car. It ended up having a bad battery.

While waiting for that, I poked around in Grandpas shop. Barn yard find? It's been sitting there for at least as long as I've been alive. Sadly this car will continue to sit. It's my step great uncles and I don't think he'd ever be able to sell it for a responsible price, so it'll just rot. :(

Started to move the car. Then the tractor ran out of fuel, so we went for lunch. When we came back the rain had cleared so we just decided to tear it apart in the yard.

We then wanted to get the car onto the flat deck to take final parts off and have it ready to transport to the crusher. We tried to lift the entire car, but the tractor didn't have enough grunt. So we lifted the front on the trailer and pushed the rest on.

First some new transmission oil to see if it improves shifting, seems to be common issue with the tr 3650 especially when cold. It seems like a ton of people report improvements with mobil synthetic, even though original manual says you're not suppose to use synthetic. I guess tremec did do some testing and now recommends it? Worth a try before digging into it further.

Black primer to paint the rear bumper to match the trunk. It'll look much better than it does now. Won't worry about making it look too pretty right now.

Mach 1 grill delete, since I removed the ugly mesh grill I needed something to fill the holes.

Sequential taillights. I didn't need these, but I always wanted them and refuse to swap the taillights in the 94. I got new bulbs to go in while I'm at it.

LED bulbs for the gauge cluster. A previous owner put in blue LEDs and they're extremely dull, cant see anything basically. I ordered a ton of them since I've had good luck with this company with the LED swap in the 94.

I also bought a bunch of extra clips since I've noticed a bunch missing on the car.

Hopefully the snow melts off the car soon so I can continue work and driving the car

Grill installed. The fitment of the delete could be improved, might play around with it once I get some of the body parts fitting better. It looks good a million times better than the mesh grill though.

Sequential taillights installed.

I also painted the rear bumper a black primer. Much better!

Overall I think I'm happy with how the car looks now, not embarrassed to drive it haha. Can divert attention to mechanical work now.

Changed the transmission fluid, seems to have done the trick! Goes into first much easier and no more 1-2, 2-3 and R grind. Syncros seem happier with the correct fluid and level

Filled the transmission through the top, seemed much easier.

Unrelated, but the 56 project is starting to make progress. Dad ended up using a Granada style front end with sn95 brakes. He also figured out how to get power steering work - electric system from early 2000s GM SUVs. It install in the interior and he can adjust the assist level. Light weight, compact, simple and no leaking.

Sorry for the derail, but Meteor! Very nice. I know the hardtops are more desirable but I've always liked the '56 and '57 cars in a 2 door post, particularly if it's one with a performance flavour.

Just a meteor front, but yeah I like the 2 door sedans. The guy also had a 2 door fairlane hardtop, very desirable car but required a ton more work.

Both my car and this car are on a hold right now while we organize the shop better. Then I'll be doing the torque boxes on my car and we have plan to build a rotisserie for the 56. I haven't done much for welding, so excited to have things to practice on.

Not much of an update... the car has been buried under snow and I've just recently found it thanks to the chinooks.

I've been trying to plan the car out some more. Decided to take a step back and drive it how it is for a season. Get some seat time and then focus on improvements. So I'll do the torque boxes, put the interior back in and get some tires before race season. I found out the 17" eagle wheels on the car are square, so I want to run 275 nitto nt01 on all corners for autocross and drag.

Got a new visor for my helmet. Gold on black looks awesome!

I also got some new lug nuts since the ones that came with the car have these shitty locks. I wish there were more options for 1/2" lug nuts, I don't really trust any of the aluminum ones on the market so I decided on forged steel. Trying to find nice looking ones in Canada is a challenge, couldn't find monster lugs that I have on the orange car so I thought I'd try gorilla this time.

Have you run the car at an autox yet?

Read the rules yet? https://www.scca.com/pages/solo-cars-and-rules

Sounds like most of what the car has so far would be OK in ESP but watch out because you can easily end up in CP or EMod if you have some "unfortunate" mods ... the rules are pretty explicit.

Read the rules first ... cannot express this strongly enough. We'll be running autoxs at the Fort Macleod airport again this coming year starting in April ... not sure where the LSCC is in getting a venue in Lethbridge ... might want to check with them also.

For info on events (dates TBA) ...

No, just got the car in October.
I have browsed through some of the rules, I think ESP would be a good aim.

LSCC will probably never get an event going... the south, especially Lethbridge, seems very resistant to any sort of motorsports. I'm surprised there's even events in Fort Macleod.

Have 1 question for you, I'll PM you.

I knew upon purchase that the upper torque box had been torn out and somebody had tried to repair it. Upon disassembly I found out its much worse than expected and basically non repairable as somebody just globed a bunch of weld over everything. Time to cut everything out and put the Wild Ride S-Box in. 3000hp capability is a "bit" over kill, but do it right the first time!

The lower torque box reinforcements went in though!
And yes that is a hole in the floor... only spot of rust on the entire car. It looks like there was an exposed hole and moisture got in and sat under the rear seat. So fixing that too.

Then finally the side scoops have been taken out. They looked like ass so I just want to sand and prime them while I have access. These are way harder to pull out than the 94-98 scoops! Hate how they're not even functional like my 94 (only year that had functional scoops for sn95).

Here's the damage. Some of it was caused when taking out, but you can see the poor attempt at repairs. The welds to the actual car were even uglier... My dad and myself are definitely not welders, but this is junk and not fixed correctly. Also took measurements and yeah it was out a decent amount paired to the other side.

The very first time I picked up a welder, it was out in a field behind a buddies place, and I'll be honest, I was half cut on cheap beer, and I'm pretty sure my welds looked no worse than this. Colour me impressed that this type of work was used on a structural piece.

Yeah it was just ugly... there was weld under that lip. So the whole bracket was twisted, broken and globbed with sketchy weld everywhere... just wasn't fixable.

apologize for the phone pics, I at least edited them though.

I order some MRT hood struts, these were one of my favorite mods on the other car. No more bumping the prop and having the hood fall on your head. Unfortunately, MRT packaged 2 RH fender brackets and no LH bracket. So waiting on that to install them.

Thanks! I'm not crazy about the wheels myself, but they do the trick for now.

As I said, went to Rocky Mountain Drift Club on the weekend! While I wasn't really "drifting" - more looping out, burning tires and destroying the track markers everywhere - It was a BLAST though! Can't wait to go again and practice more.

Anyways, I got my girlfriend to snap a couple pics with my camera!

Well since I blew up the orange car and my truck needs AC work, I guess I'll be driving this car for the summer and it'll have to do some daily driver duty.

Might as well make it look a little nicer! Work Kiwami wheels from the other car!
