The ISG is part of a 48 volt system, which drives an electric water pump, an electric AC compressor, and an electric auxiliary compressor that Mercedes calls an eZV. This means there’s no belt-driven accessory drive, reducing overall engine length—a godsend for an inherently long engine like an inline-six.

The electric compressor is basically a 48-volt turbo that crams air into the cylinders when the engine is at low RPMS and the big exhaust-driven turbo isn’t cutting it. Mercedes says the eZV accelerates to 70,000 RPM within 0.3 seconds, and that, between it and the ISG, this inline-six should get off the line quickly with “no turbo lag.”

Pretty cool having the electric turbo. Basically this car should feel supercharged. I am curious why they built this engine when they have their 3.0 V6 already?

Probably for NVH reason?

Still wonder how long a wheelbase a car need to be to get this. I would assume if they jam this in the C class, the front cup holders could be gone.

But if one is playing the numbers game, B9 RS4's electric turbo 3.0L V6 is expected to drop in at 450-500hp.

I read an article a while ago (year plus) that mentioned they were working on an inline 6 because their V6's couldn't match their V8's on NVH and customers would expect better as engine downsizing continues.

Well if you want to really play the numbers game, these aren't even AMG engines. ;)

This will be a direct replacement for the M276 engine, the 333-360hp V6 TT that was in the 400/450/43 across the MB lineup. The top range 400hp version will probably replace the 400hp M276 version that's going in the E43.

I read about all MB's new engines in a Motor Trend article the other day and they sound fantastic.

70,000 RPM in 0.3 seconds for the electric turbo

I read the standard 4.0TT V8 will have 476 HP / 516 TQ as well.

The diesel I4 came out last year in EU. The length of the M256 is comparable to a 4 cylinder with belt driven accessories  so it should be a drop in replacement in other classes.
