Hey All,

Looking to develop my basement soon and was wondering where is the cheapest place to buy lumber.

I usually hit up Home Depot and/or Rona, but I have heard that calling Timbertown is sometimes cheaper than buying from Home Depot or Rona.

Any recommendations?

Thanks!

Have you called them (Timbertown)?

Figure out what you need, and then get quotes at a few places? :dunno:

I literally just did this on the weekend.. timbertown was slightly more but seemed to have better quality lumber and they load it for you so I went there. I may have saved $40 if I went to home depot but would have spent more time sorting and loading.

Windsor plywood has been good to me with my door purchases and they are in the SE so that's convenient but I framed my basement with steel studs. I purchased them at shoemaker

Windsor used to price match, it's been years since I bought wood though so not sure if they still do.

Thats what I was thinking as well, I find that HD and Rona charge pretty high for subpar lumber. The last time I was there, I spent 20-30 minutes picking out 20 - 2x4's.

Thanks for the heads up!

What was your reasoning to use steel studs?

Just wondering if anyone had any recent feedback on this. Developing the basement like OP did a few years back and am dreading going to home depot to sort through the shitty pile of twisted 2x4's for the 100 studs I need. But if its significantly cheaper then I'll do it because, well, I'm cheap

Not lumber but does anyone know where I can get cheap-er drywall?

Home improvement warehouse is decent and delivers..definitely cheaper then Home Depot. YMMV on the twistiness

Windsor Plywood has way better quality and matches or beats the big guys on price.

When I did my basement, I had one barely twisted 2X4 in the pile from them. Every other piece was straight as an arrow.

I've only got 20' pieces from them but DE Lumber seemed to be pretty good...another option to check out for pricing. http://www.delumber.com/

Lumber is virtually a commodity. Wait until Rona has one of their "15% off if you spend over _____" sales and go buy it all there.

Not the person you asked, but our basement was framed with steel studs by the builder. They fucking suck and and attaching drywall is an exercise in frustration. If I could go back in time I would rip that garbage out and put in wood studs.

So his grow op wouldn't rot the basement completely.

Agree with the steel stud comments. Try hanging a TV too... frustratingly painful compared with wood studs. Even with a metal/wood stud finder, etc.

The time frame I had to pick up the material changed so I ended up ordering everything online from HD and picked it up the next day. I was actually pleasantly surprised in the quality and what the employee picked out. Out of the 100 or so studs and 2x4x10's I got I would say I only noticed maybe a handful that were pretty curved but I just set those aside to cut up for the smaller pieces. I ordered excess thinking I would need to return some for sure but I may not have to.
