Lowering Springs vs Adjustable Coilovers - Click HERE for Original Thread

I was wondering with everybodies own personal experience, which is better in your opinion, adjustable coilovers or lowering springs and why?

I had coilover sleeves and I hated them. Maybe because I was using them with stock shocks. If I was use coils again I would go true coilovers now I wouldn't cheap out and just get the sleeves, I would go for a set of Koni's or Tein's. Also I never adjusted them anyways so I switched to Neuspeed race springs and Tokiko Blues and It's been working pretty good lately. My theory is you do it right the first time and you won't have to do it again.;)

Depends on what your doing and what your after, me personally fully adjustable coil-overs are the only way to go. Reasons, for me, are to allow proper corner weight balancing, adjustable shocks to allow a range of performance levels street to track, and selection of spring rates as needed.

Can you put lowering springs on stock shocks, on a 94 Golf?

Lowering springs are part of a suspension assembly while coilovers are the full assembly. Can't really compare them.

wow redlyne, you finally managed to mess up the italic thing...

Coil overs act the same as lowering springs, except that the coil-overs are able to be adjusted. Generally a person only adjusts the coils once to get it to the hight level they want, i which case it may well have been cheaper to get shorter springs of that hight. the only problem with the spring route is that you cant fine tune it. they are what they are.

I though coils would be a neat way to go and i considered it but the other thing is that i wont spend 1500 bucks and over on suspension for my street car, so im going the cheaper route with lowering springs with matched shortened shocks.

It's funny you say that. I thought the same thing. I had the choice of a Stage 2 Turbo upgrade or a Stage 3 Coilover upgrade. Both are around the same price. As the car has enough power to make 1st gear difficult I thought throwing more power at it wouldn't help all that much.

Now the suspension is another thing altogether. You are using it all the time. I went for the Stage 3 coilovers and it rides like stock but with adjustable height and adjustable rebound.

I will not go back to lowering springs again if I have a choice. They weren't cheap but you get what you pay for.

If you can afford a good set of coilovers I would get those.

He doesn't drive a brand new car with 240hp tho, try a 14 year old car with 140.

And your point is?? HP has nothing to do with ride. I had a few grand to spend. It was either on the HP upgrade which I wouldn't use all the time or the suspension upgrade which gets used all the time. I would rather pay extra for something that gets used all the time. The choice I had had nothing to do with anything. It was just background info on how I made my choice and why I'm happy with what I chose.

If you don't care about ride then buy some springs. Maybe upgrade your strut/shocks while your at it.

Some people might enjoy the ride on lowered springs. After driving with both I would choose the coilovers.

Cost/performance.

Coilovers in my case were worth the extra money.

It may not be in his case.

I just want to point a few things out here, if you have proper springs and shocks the car will ride as well as it would on coil-overs. The only difference is that you cannot adjust the hight (in many cases you can still adjust dampening). You are assuming that because you are using coils that they are matched better. You know what the say about asSuming...

anyways, its great you are happy with your purchase. thats all that matters in the end, but if you never adjust the hight of you coilovers again, you basically just have lowering springs.

The setup im getting will be slightly stiffer than stock, but it will handle far better. Thats exactly what you said you liked about yours, so I fail to see where properly matched springs and shocks are so much worse than coilovers.

I've owned 2 cars and bought coilovers for both of them. The only reason is I like to lower my car beyond what they offer in spring/shock combos and I like the adjustability of the dampness so you can fine tune it to your own liking.

But you know what, if I was someone who was just going to put them on my stock car and not really lower them too much, then I would say they are a waste of money. If you just want a 2'' drop get some adjustable shocks and your ride will be the same.

Tein super street dampers

I'm loving these coilovers. adjustable hieght and stiffness. Rides as smooth as a stock car.

MCSHOW.....if u're car is driven in the winter as well then i'd go with coilovers. U can then raise it, or else u'll get a lot of headaches during the winter months.

yeah man, i think i might do that when i get my new rsx type s
