Default Are you going to attend UofC June 2008 Convocation?!

Hi my Convocation is on June 9th, it's a Monday so I will have to go work, as well as my parents. I mean what's a big deal to attend the Convocation?

Isn't it just like what we had when we were in HighSchool? Sit there and wait for 3 hours until the last person being called up (which will be myself since my last name!).

We also have to pay $35 for gown rental fee!!! (I hope this is the last amount of money people gonna pay for being a poor student)

I decide not to attend the Convocation and just go to pick up my degree in the office.

    Anyone will do the same?!

I'm kind of torn on this topic. I'm graduating this semester but neither me, nor my family, is big on the "kodak moments" so I'm not sure I see the point.

I went to my brothers years ago, boring. I decided at that moment I would not go to my own.

Some people see it as fruition of hard work, IMO, its just a piece of paper, getting a good job and having that education is the only real reward.

    Skip it.

I went to my first one at SAIT and thought it was a waste of my time. I'm not going to go to my UBC one. I just can't justify it.

For me it was more for my mom, as a single mom raising a family on her own. It was her moment just as much as it was mine.

It was boring as hell, but if I had to do it over again just to see that smile on my mom's face, I'd do it.

Other than that...I'd say skip it if no one in your family cares to go.

I went to mine, and while listening to all the names was boring, I enjoyed it. The parents, brother and my hubby (back then b/f) attended to cheer me on as well. I dunno, it felt like the conclusion to that chapter of my life. Granted, I am female and by stereotype alone am a lot more sentimental than most men

I went to mine as well. After you spend 4+ years getting your degree, what's one more day? Probably one of the last chances to hang out with people in your program, take some pictures, chat about what people are doing next etc.
'Course if no one likes you, best to stay home.

I went. It wasn't fun, but it sure as hell didn't suck either. It was just fun to hang out with some friends for an hour or 2. Make fun of the dean. At the end of the day it was like; did I really have anything better to do? Besides, I wanted to do the Heisman pose with my degree in a grad gown. lol

I think I will be going to mine on June 10. I think it is more for my Mom and Dad also. They are coming down to see it, so whatever, just get drunk that night with the rest of your classmates!

I didn't go to mine. Actually most people I know didn't go to theirs.

I went to my sister's and that's when I decided I wasn't going to mine at all. Great to be recognized but I don't need to sit for 3+ hours and have my name called to be proud of what I did.

Haha exactly. No friends, no convocation. I think it'll be fun to cheer for my friends, as I really enjoy Haskayne. And you know what? It's a cumulation of years of hard work - I think it's important to have that concluding event to signify the end of it all. If I can sit through stats or calc, I can sit through a convocation.

I personally didn't go to my undergrad convocation because I knew that wasn't the end of the road for me. It's like a leaving the Campbell Trophy on the ice, because the job's not done.

That said, it could be a very satisfying experience.

I went to my older brother's convocation at U of C last year and attended my own at U of A in 2003. I will be attending my girlfriend's this year at U of C.

All I have to say is if I had to convocate at U of C I wouldn't go but if I had to convocate at U of A again I certainly would go. U of C convocation is a joke compared to what I had at U of A. You guys are getting ripped off big time. U of C was in a gym!? and the ceremony was obviously not rehearsed as the profs and administration made numerous mistakes. There was no sense of pride or respect for the ceremony or the people. People were hooting and hollaring, people were dressed like they just fell off the turnip truck, even the Master of Ceremonies was wearing skate shoes, it was disgraceful!

This reminds me of the recent convocation at the U of C where the guy faking the Scottish accent pronounced this girl's last name as "Slut-ter" (Slater).
