Thanks for the reminder (School Zones) quote:

I just wanted to say that I think it's pretty cool that Beyond has put up notices reminding our members of the school zone being in effect. Guess it's not just that it's been put up - but maybe moreso that it is the very first thing you see on the site. Instead of the advertising.

Couldn't find a more appropriate audience to put a notice for people to slow down.

Say that next time a kid runs out on the street in front of you and you need to slam the brakes on.

Are you nuts? Without a limit, people would drive at normal speed. 50k being the standard residential speed limit means people usually drive 60k at least.

You really think at 60 people can avoid a kid who runs out from behind a car right into their path, while drinking a cola and listening to their wife or girlfriend nagging them from the passenger seat?

I doubt it.

Schoolzones save lives. Children's lives.

Here we go again... Parents need to teach their stupid kids to respect the road. Just a few days ago, I was doing a right turn onto Country Hills by the Hamptons Co-op. Stupid little (white) kid on a bike had this huge ass helmet on (at least that's good) riding on the sidewalk. Gets to the intersection, doesn't even bother looking and just rides his bike across. Of course I was already on my brake before I got there so i was stopped, but no eye contact, not even a small look or turned his head to see if any cars were coming. Just, "oh, it's a crosswalk, I can just dive right in". His (asian) buddy riding behind him did the smart thing and was looking before he even got to the crosswalk. Good for him.

So whatever happened to that? Simon the safety bear or whatever the fuck was his name. I remember when I was going to elementary (yay Highwood FTW), they drilled that shit into you. Put your arm out, look both ways, make eye contact with the driver(s), only cross when it's safe to do so. Or is that just too gay to teach now?

Nope, they were doing that on Global News yesterday morning. And they actually had the camera rolling when some guy drove right past them after they had their hands out... cops were right there too. Could have been glare from the sun but it was a close call.

Then let's make the whole city a school zone, because you know, kids DO walk outside of a school zone to get home (I'm pretty sure not every kid's house is in a school zone). If they are dumb enough to run out from behind parked cars, they're gonna do it everywhere. We must be protective of all the children in the city!

I've mentioned this before, but I went to school in the same spot my whole life, which was a 70 zone I believe, and they may have made it a 50 zone directly in front of the school some yrs later) Elementary with a highschool next door.. I can't remember a kid ever being hit in my 12 yrs there, and the parking lots were on the other side of the street, so you were forced to cross it. I think at the peak there was ~1200 in mid/high school and 600 in the elementary..

Some are needed while others are not. For example, the school zone on Flint Road SE and the massive cash cow along Elbow Dr. downtown.

serioulsy?! Do you need stats to prove that driving 30k thru a playground zone will help you avoid hiting a child or even killing one compared to 60k?

Actually yes I do. There are many aspects of life where we think one thing yet in reality the result is the opposite. IF when I drive through a playground I only ever encounter a child at play 1% of the time, what is the TRUE likely hood that slowing down to 30 would prevent an accident?

Statistics don't lie.

It'd say the TRUE likelihood is that if you are not paying attention, and that kid runs out in front of you, that going 30 instead of 60 is going to help you 100% of the time.

It may not mean that 100% of the time you won't hit the kid, but it means that a) your chances of doing so are lessened (it's not rocket science) and b) if you DO hit the child, that you will do less damage. (Also not rocket science.)

If you are trying to say it makes NO difference at all, you sir, are an idiot.

And if you agree it makes even the slightest difference, isn't potentially saving a child's life worth getting to your destination 15 seconds later?

Bingo. Kids walk along streets that are not 30 zones all the time. Yet we don't reduce all roads next to sidewalks down to 30kph. Think of the children! They're only protected when they're IN school or IN a fenced in playground. When they're walking to and from, they're on their own.

And if driving 20 instead of 30 were to make even the slightest difference? How about driving 10? How about 5? If there was even the slightest difference, would you voluntarily drive that limit?
